Do you mean foods? Beans are healthy, high in fiber and cheap. Bran is cheap too. I sprinkle a tablespoon or two on my cereal and it really helps to fill me up.

Oh, I know what you guys might be talking about for week 3?

It goes
5 minute warm up
90-sec run
90-sec walk
3-min run
3-min walk
repeat...

In my podcast, the second time through, it went straight to the cooldown after the 3 minute run, instead of doing a 3 minute recovery period and then the 5 minute cooldown. Week 3 was a bit shorter than the rest.

Did that make any sense? Is that what you mean?

That may have been it...it sounds like what happened to me.

Beans were going to be first on my list of cheap and healthy. Lentils if you like them (I can't stand the texture unless they're in soup). Veggies in season or from a farmer's market if you have one. Frozen veggies on sale are sometimes cheaper by weight (we just stocked up), and the nutritional value is pretty good. Brown rice, plain old-fashioned oatmeal (not instant), and barley (I think) are all complex carbs and pretty inexpensive in bulk.

My podcasts have a VERY distinct audio cue to go from walking to running, or vice versa. It's a chime (similar to a clock chime I think) that goes up in pitch when you are to start running, and down in pitch when you are to start walking. And then when it's time for the last 5 min walk/cool-down, it does the chime twice as long, still going down in pitch. I am always running as it gives the cool-down chime. Week three I was walking when it gave my cool-down chime. I ran for part of it and then walked and cooled-down after I felt I was tired. I always run out of music before running out of road on my runs anyway.

I finished week 5 mix 2 yesterday. I didn't think I was going to make it, but I did. I was proud of myself.

I've been doing well these past couple of days. Yesterday though, Ryan had come home with some hot wings that he had made at the country club. They were very tasty, but boy did my stomach let me have it for eating them!!! I've lost weight acording to the scale, but I think it is mostly water weight.

I went for my weigh in today and lost another 1.2# for a total of 5.4# in 4 weeks. I had hoped to lose weight faster than that, but at this pace, I should be at my goal weight in a year to 14 months. I got another Leslie Sansone dvd today, Walk Strong, so I did the Walk Away your Waistline before my weigh in and Walk Strong after. That's a total of 1 hour 18 minutes, which is a lot for me. Walk Strong does a lot of lunges and squats so I'm guessing I'll be sore tomorrow.

well I dont get here often but congrats on all the weight loss!!! Im down 90 pounds now---a little over half way to goal--but I will never go back to what I used to eat!! I finely figured out what I can and can not eat---went to a water park with our boys over the weekend and could not believe all the over weight people---and many many teens over weight--broke my heart! America is over weight! I did how ever eat an ice cream cone the first in over a year----ohhhhhhhhhhh it was yummy--but because of all the walking and climbing my sugar never went up!! Something I have learned to do is park far away in a parking lot and use the stairs---Im getting excited--I no longer have shelves for hips!!!
Keep up all the good work ladies!! I feel so much better--and the Dr. is amazed!

Shelves for hips...what a thought.

I'm doing somewhat okay today. Tonight I did better with my bedtime snack...cheese and milk instead of trail mix or other sweets. I've ate too many calories and carbs today, but I'm gonna work them off tomorrow with some walkin'

I've got to do my strength training exercises and my daily motivational lesson before going to bed, so goodnight, everyone!

I started South Beach Phase One today. Pray for me!!! I'm excited but a little nervous about how I'll be doing in a few days.

Weighed in yesterday and I'm right back where I started. 221 pounds. I'm really hoping that South Beach will provide me with the structure I need to finally tackle this beast.

I'm excited for you Kat! DH and I may be starting it after he gets back from Chicago (a few weeks). He wants to look into it more closely first, since it will ultimately be his call.

That's my exact weight right now Kat! I'm still 10 pounds above my pre-preg weight.

Can any of you ladies tell me in a nutshell what the differences are between South Beach and other low-carb diets--like Atkins, for instance? I have a large amount of wieght to lose, and in the past I've had good short-tern results from Atkins, but it's hard on to make dinners that the rest of the family likes and that I can eat. I was wondering what the difference was with South Beach.

From what I know, South Beach is a more liberal low carb plan and Atkins is the strictest. Phase 1 of South Beach and Induction of Atkins are the strictest phases, where carbs are severely restricted.

After two weeks, you go to phase 2 and Ongoing Weight Loss in South Beach and Atkins plans respectively. This allows you to have a few more carbs until you lose most or all of the weight. On Atkins, when you've lost most of the weight and you're within 10 lbs of your goal weight, then you go to the third stage (which I don't remember the name of), and you stay on it until you reach goal.

The final phase of South Beach and Atkins are Phase 3 and Lifestyle Maintanance respectively, where you learn how to maintain your weight. It's also where you find the number of carbs you can safely eat to maintain your weight and not gain it back.

That's the Cliff Note's versions of both plans. I don't know much about other plans except my own, which I'll put into another post. Hope this helps.

Here is the plan I'm trying to follow, with some success:

Breakfast: 1 serving of protein, which is any one of the following: 1 oz. cheese, 1/2 cup cottage cheese, 2 slices bacon, 1 egg, along with 1 cup skim milk. Alternately, I can have 1 measured serving of cereal or oatmeal and 1 cup skim milk.

Morning Snack: Any one of the protein choices listed above, 1 serving vegetable, or 1 fruit.

Lunch: 1 serving meat or protein item listed above, 1-2 servings salad or vegetable, and 1 cup skim milk.

Afternoon Snack: One protein item, plus 1 cup skim milk, or 1 (6 oz.) container light yogurt.

Dinner: Same as lunch, except I may have two servings of a protein item listed above instead of one. I may also have a 1/4 to 1/2 serving of a carb item or dessert at this time.

Dessert/Evening Snack: Any one of the following: 1/4 cup trail mix, 1/2 cup sugar free ice cream, 1 sugar free ice cream bar, 3 sugar free cookies, 2-3 pieces sugar free candy

NOTES: If I have dessert at dinnertime, then I can only have trail mix or 1 serving protein item listed above as snack.

Milk: 3 cups skim milk daily, plus up to 3/4 cup in coffee.

Carb items: I can eat 1/2 to 1 full serving of a maximum of 3 items daily, which include: bread, cereal, pasta, rice, potatoes, corn, peas, beans, baked goods, sweets, pancakes, etc.

Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays: 1 serving sugared sweet item may be eaten for dessert for Sundays and holidays. Also, I may have up to 5 carb item servings on those days.

Finished week 3 of the c25k! Moving on to week 4. I do hope the music gets better...thus far the music for first week has been my favorite, although it does grow on me as I do the workouts.

Phase One, Day Two finished successfully! I even managed to survive a party at my sister's house last night. I stuck to the veggie tray and the cheeses. I turned down Key Lime Pie and didn't feel deprived! Woo Hoo! I'm discovering that I actually have a lot more energy these last couple days. I'm hoping that it stays this easy...

Thanks for the info--on Atkins vs South Beach and your own plan, as well.

I'm still not sure what I am going to do, but I have dilly-dallied around for too long and my weight is affecting my health and my ability to get around easily. So it's time to bite the bullet and do something.

We're on week 7 of the C25K. DH and I aren't doing the music version (listening to MP3s) since we're working out together and spend some of the time talking.

Here's the link to what we're doing... Couch to 5K

Hope I did that link right! We're also running six days a week instead of just the three they suggest and plan to just increase the running time by three minutes a week from now on until we're running three miles in thirty minutes each time. Does that make sense? We should be there in... five weeks, I think, if I'm doing the math correctly. Next week will be our last week following the schedule so explicitly, since we're finding that just adding three minutes every week is comfortable and "doable" for our level of fitness.

Anyway, just wanted to post a clarification as to what I'm doing and include that link in case someone wasn't able to do the MP3 version. We easily ran a mile and a half last night in fifteen minutes. Just a month and a half ago, when we started this, we could hardly run a quarter of a mile without gasping for breath. This program has definitely helped us!

Edited to add: That link leads you to a page about doing a triathalon, which is definitely NOT what I'm attempting. (I can't swim, so that would be impossible. Ha!) That's the C25K portion of the triathalon training.

Regarding Atkins vs. South Beach.

South Beach emphasizes good carbs vs. bad carbs and glycemic index. Atkins (as far as I know) just considers a carb is a carb is a carb. SB is about the RIGHT carbs, ATkins is about the NUMBER of carbs.

I think, overall, SB is healthier and gives you a more rounded diet.

My aunts both did it together and had great success. One aunt gave up and ballooned back up, but the other is doing really well in her maintenance. She looks terrific!

Yeppers on Christine's post! I'm really liking the South Beach "Diet" so far. Last night I was crazy craving some chocolate (didn't help that literally EVERYONE around me was eating mini Twix bars). Instead I made myself some SF Jello and enjoyed that. I was so proud of myself!

I tried Atkins several years ago and lasted about two weeks on it. Since I was so restricted I wanted nothing more than to eat an entire loaf of bread after those two weeks. After I finish Phase One, I'll get to start adding back low GI fruit and whole grain breads- both big no-nos on Atkins, but foods that are really healthy for you.

I've also been doing The Lord's Table Bible study at settingcaptivesfree.com. As I've said before overeating is a major spiritual issue for me. I use food to fill those voids in my life instead of seeking God. The study is really helping me to focus on seeking true fulfillment from the Lord.

I've discovered when I'm really craving something, or just have the munchies, grabbing a glass of water or doing a light workout really helps curb my cravings.

I'm doing pretty well so far. I've kept my calories around or below 1500 and my carbs under 150 for two days now. I'm planning to do my strength training exercises and housecleaning today, so I'll get in quite a workout.

I wonder how many calories I will burn from scrubbing toilets?

Lost 2# at my weigh in today. The big news is that I'm now under 200! Just barely, but I'll take it anyway. The last two weeks I've been exercising more and eating just a little bit more. I just make sure I stay within the alloted points.
