When does your school year start and end? I've know HS'ers that follow a more traditional schedule (say Aug/Sept - May/June) then others that stretch out to almost a year round schedule with mulitple breaks. What type of schedule works for you?

We school year round so we don't have an "official" end. Right now it is slowing down for us because we are wrapping up some subjects like science, history, health, spelling, but Math and Reading continue on without large breaks. As soon as we finish the science, history, health and spelling we will have a few weeks off from those before we start our next round of curriculum, which will probably be in July sometime.

We do early August to late May.

We pretty much follow the public school schedule but for this year we will be working on history and/or science through the summer because we didn't finish. I try to finish our books and when they are done, they are done. They are taking their math final exams right now....HALLELUJAH!!!!

Thanks everyone. I wondered what other HS'ers did. Since my state requires attendance reports every month I try to plan lessons and schedule around those number of days. This year we managed to finish a little early. Some subjects almost 2 weeks, others a week. Since we're not part of a co-op but on our own I wondered how others scheduled their year. Though I imagine some just are less structured/scheduled than I am. But for us, it works. We've set a tenative schedule to begin back in mid-July while taking a good number of breaks through the year. We should finish mid-May. Actually, dd set the schedule around her birthday, holidays, school breaks, and we have some time we can exchange too. I just love the flexibility. [:)]

We pretty much have school year round. We don't do every subject year round--some, like history and social studies happen as we travel or something triggers a question. My son is working in a second grade math book, but is doing basic multiplication and division in his head. He is very advanced in science, but behind in reading. Reading is the only subject that we do every week and that is because it needs the most practice. It's hard to get him to practice because his interest level far exceeds his abilities and books he can read bore him.

We school Sept 1st to August 31st. We are relaxed and overly-busy homeschoolers, as I have to work full-time, so basically schooling year-round gives me some breathing room.

Technically our school year starts August 1, since that's when we have to notify, and ends June 30 when portfolios are due. Realisically we are very relaxed / unschoolers, so school is life and life is school and there really is no starting and stopping point.

I figure the year has 365 days and the dc are learning something on all of them, not just September through June.[:)] We took breaks from Thanksgiving to January-ish, a couple of weeks in the spring, a couple of weeks in late August-early September, and whenever else we felt the need. In September I would look dc in the eyeball and pronounce them promoted to the next grade, lol, but we just kept doing what we were doing.

I have tried several schedules, I think it just depends on the year. This year we will be doing VERY LIGHT school work, starting today (the last day of public school). I am hoping to keep up with this light school work at least 3 days a week. My goal is to start a full load of school in August when it will be too hot, sticky, and full of bitting bugs, to go outside. I will, of course, be flexible for camping trips and other outings we might have this summer. They will basically be doing the "Key to... Math", reading books or magazines of their choice and me reading to them. My boys will also be finishing a writing book that they are actually enjoying, but that shouldn't take more than a month, possibly less. Then, I'm hoping to take our first real break in the fall when the weather is perfect again![;)]

Ours is Sept-May, during the summer we also school but it's much lighter.

We technically school year round but for the months of June, July and August we have a much lighter work load. If we have anything that was finished during the traditional school year(Sept-May) then we finish it during the summer. We also use the summer months for more outdoor field trips and activities and lots of extra trips to the library that has a/c lol

Hello, We follow a year round schedule.. Here's an example http://www.wcpss.net/Calendars/2008-09/08-09-year-round.pdf We go by track 1 [red].. But instead of taking the 3 wks off in between, we take 1 or maybe 2 off, and add our weeks on to our summer. We usually end at the end of April, or beginning of May. I guess it's considered a "modified" year round. We love it! :o) Hope that helps! [:)]
