My notes on the chapter on Prayer:

-Of all the disciplines, prayer is the most important because it ushers us into perpetual communion with the Father.

-As we mature in our prayer life, we begin to desire the things Jesus desires for us, to love the things he loves, and to will the things he wills.

-In our efforts to pray it is easy for us to be defeated at the start because we have been taught that everything in the universe is already set, and so things cannot be changed.

-The Bible pray-ers prayed as if their prayers could and would make an objective difference. We should follow their example.

-For successfule intercessory prayer, it is essential that we take time to LISTEN to God.

-We must never wait until we feel like praying before we pray for others.

I really needed this chapter. Setting aside a daily prayer time is something I have always struggled with, and this chapter reminded me of the importance of prayer and has prompted me to continue to work on improving my prayer life.

Fasting - I think this is very good solid material on the subject of fasting. I especially liked the explanation of how fasting reveals what is really in you - it brings it up to the surface. Then he gave some practical ways to begin fasting.

Study - Study is a very broad subject that can entail most anything - studying nature or people - it doesn't all have to be just words in a book, although that is part of it too. For serious study he said to leave the house and go to a place where there aren't other obligations.

STUDY
We are transformed by the renewing of the mind.
Rom 12:2 Phil 4:8 John 8:32
meditation is devotional, study is analytical.
"Study provides a certain objective framwork within which meditation can successffully function.

4 Steps
1. repetition inner mind trained by this action.
2. Concentration, centering the mind on what is being studied.
3. Comprehension leads to insight and discernment.
4, Reflection defines the significanxe of what is studied. Reflection brings us to see things from God's perspective.
When we ponder the Scriptures we see and hear what we could not before.
acumlation of information vs knowledge

Study involves 3 things
what does it say
what does it mean
is it right or wrong

set aside retreats for study

Books listed in this chapter:
The Confessions of St. Augustine
The Imitation of Christ by Thomas a Kempis
The Practice of the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence
The Little Flowers of St. Francis by Brother Ugolino
Pensees of Blaise Pascal
Table Talks of Martin Luther
Calvin's Institutes of the Christian Religion
The Journal of George Fox
Journal of John Wesley
William Law's A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life
A Testament of Devotion by Thomas Kelly
The Cost of Discipleship by Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Mere Christianity by C S Lewis
Revelations of Divine Love by Juliana of Norwich
Introduction to the Devout Life by Francis de Sales
The Journal of John Woolman

Key to study: not reading many books but experience what you study.

I try to keep in mind, its not what I know but what I can testify to.

I liked this chapter on simplicity, for that is what I'm ever striving to do. He pointed out Matthew 6:33 - Seek first God's Kingdom and all these things should be added to you. Don't seek first simplicity. He said to buy things for their usefulness, not their status, which we do anyway. He said not to have a bigger house than you really need; here we could do better, but why buy a different house just to get less square footage? You can go overboard the other way with simplicity too by believing that stuff is bad. It's okay to have things but seek Him first and it's even better to give things away and bless others.

Simplicity
With simplicity the lust for status and position are gone.
Without simplicity we buy things we do not want to impress people we do not like.
To conform to a sick society is to be sick.
Are we prudent or are we hording?
Are we ambitious or are we coveting?
Are we industrious or are we greedy?

Scriptures each one makes good discussion-.
Ps 62:10 If riches increase don't set your heart on them.
How will we know where our heart is set on?
Prov 11:28 Those who trust in riches will wither. How will we know what we trust in?
Luke 16:13 You can't serve God and mammon.
What do we look for to keep from trusting riches?
Luke 6:20,24 The poor are blesed and woe to the rich.
Then who is rich?
Matt 6:21,19 your treasure is where your heart is. So how do we know where our heart is? and how do we change our heart?
Matt 19:16-22 Rich should get rid of his possessions.
Luke 12:15 Watch greed because our life does not consistof our possissions
Luke 12:33 sell all and give provide purse that does not wear out
Luke 1216-21 rich farmer not rich towards God.
Matt 13:45,46 sell all for the kingdom
Luke 6:30 give to all who ask.
1Tim 6:9 desire for riches brings ruin
1 Tim 3:3,8 a bishop should not love money, deacon not greedy for gain
Heb 13:5 Don't love money God is with you.
James 4:1.2 desire brings killings. fights, wars. covet
Eph 5:5 1Cor 5:11 covet is idolitry
greed needs stern discipline
1 Tim 6:17-19 don't trust wealth, share generously.

God gives abundance
Phil4:12 able to live either way
Deut 8:17 Give God the glory
simplicity vs affluence
seek for the Kingdom then other things will fall in place.
1st step of seeking is silence before God.
If you don't seek the kingdom first, you don't seek it at all.

-to secure your life in the world is to be anxious about many things.
-Freedom from anxiety is characterized by 3 inner attitudes:
If what we have is received as a gift;
If what we have is to be cared for by God;
If what we have is available to others.
Then we possess freedom from anxiety.

- Ten Outward Ideas for Simplicity
1. Buy things for usefulness rather then status.
2. Reject anything producing an addiction in you.
3. Develop a habit of giving things away.
4. Refuse to be propagandized by the custodians of modern gadgetry.
5. Learn to enjoy things without owning them.
6. Develop a deep appreciation for creation.
7. Be skeptical of all buy now pay later schemes.
8. Plain honest speech, honesty, integrity.
9. Reject anything that will breed the oppression of others.
10. Shun whatever would keep us from our main goal.

On Solitude

Don't say too much - when you do say something make it count
much value in quiet reflection - can do it many time during the day wherever you are
practicing silence and solitude means you trust God
quoted St. John of the Cross - during dark times of the soul don't despair - keep trusting God

when following an outreach the 12 went away to lonely place. Mk 6:31
Preparation before the cross Matt 26:36-46

The silence of listening is solitude

Discipline of Submission
Each discipline produces freedom, our goal is freedom, not discipline.
Discipline is not the answer, but they lead us to the answer.

Submission sets us free from wanting to do our own way.
If we see that most things in life are not major issues, then we will hold them lightly.
Best way to handle most areas of submission is to say nothing.
Our happiness does not come from getting our way but by self denial. Because he who wants to save his life will lose it, but he who looses his life for Christ's sake will find it.
Our identity is built in service with self denial.
We love ourselves by self denial, not in self seeking.
The cross life, voluntary submission, freely accepted servanthood.
Very good concept: be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ!

Eph 5:21 To fear God is to treat others with respect.

Rely on Holy Spirit in areas of limits of submission.
Acts of Submission
1. To God
2. To Scripture
3. To our family
4. To our neighbors
5. To the believing community
6. To the poor
7. To the world

Spiritual authority is marked by compassion and power.

Do we submit to the position of authority which lacks spiritual power? Yes until it becomes destructive. Submit out of courtesy.
