ORIGINAL: SemperReformanda The best way to reach my age group (22-30) is to have something for them and make it uniquely geared to them. It's interesting you say that. I felt just the opposite when I was younger. I thought--where are all the grown-ups? I'm a grown-up now, so I want to really study and be alongside the grown-ups! The various churches I attended during my college/single years had singles or college/career groups, and I didn't like being partitioned off from the Body of Christ that way. I knew I knew very little, and I was eager to be around those who knew very much--the wiser and more mature folks.

What about serving other age groups if there is nowhere to sit and soak? Where is it implicit that people only learn within their own age group? I discovered a secret about learning from my elders in the faith when there was not any other option for my age group. I went to a mixed age Sunday School class and when I look back that is the time I grew the most spiritually. I didn't go to church to be entertained. Part of the problem is the segregating people from others based solely on age or marital status. Families aren't made up on just one age or gender. That brought another fond memory to my mind. ; ) Years ago in the cell group I was in I was 18,19,20 and was the youngest by about a dozen years with most of them being 40+. Never before and never since did I learn so much in a church group or get to know a dozen people so well. The age never mattered to me.

It's very difficult to figure out the modern-day excuses why young adults do not attend a church or are involved in a local body of believers...mostly for me because it just sounds like consumerism. Not from everyone, but the majority, yes most definitely. We have created a culture of consumers who want something for their time and energy - they want to receive rather than just give. How do we as Christians reflect this in our lives to counter that mindset? I guess that's what we're trying to figure out, I just wish that so many of our churches would stop feeding into it.
