Congratulations Kim! She is beautiful! Love all the dark hair! Welcome baby Gwen! I agree, she is tiny! Eden was 6 lbs 4 ozs 19 inces long and even the newborn size clothes are big on her. And the newborn size diapers are too small too, we have to fold the top down. When we left the hospital she was 5 lbs 14 ozs, so pretty much the same size! Isn't labor amazing? I was so proud of myself and so full of energy afterwards! I tell everyone it was the most terrible and wonderful thing I have ever done! Congrats again! Can't wait to hear to whole story!

I tell everyone it was the most terrible and wonderful thing I have ever done! I 100% concur!!! LADIES, I NEED SERIOUS PRAYER!!!! It had been a while since Gwen had peed/pooped, so we called the midwife to come over and check her out - and make sure BF'ing is going well. She's already lost 10% of her body weight!!! She's feeding well and DEFINITELY getting everything I'm making, she just really needs my milk to come in. The plan is currently wake her every 2 hours, feed on one side and have Brad give her 0.5 oz formula (by syringe) while I pump the other side. I'm starting to take fenugreek and blessed thistle in the hopes that my milk will come in speedily. If she continues to lose, we'll have to go into the hospital, and I do NOT want that - I want my baby to thrive on my milk . PLEASE PRAY FOR MY MILK TO COME IN ASAP!!!!! My midwife is very confident that once my milk comes in, this will be a non-issue since she's such a good nurser. I'll explain more about why they think it's happening later when I write out my birth story, but please, please, please pray!

I'll explain more about why they think it's happening later when I write out my birth story, but please, please, please pray! Why aren't you feeding her from both sides per feeding? Will be praying It's completely normal for babies to lose even up to 20% of their birthweight after they're born. As long as she's swallowing and eating at least every 2 hours she'll be good. Is she jaundiced? Is that why you're worried or is she dehydrated? I'd recommend not pumping and instead just feeding her from *both* breasts every feeding (if she'll stay awake for that). Supplementing with formula can cause her to *not* want to eat from your breasts every 2 hours since it's broken down slower and fills their tummies more than the colostrum would...which would cause your milk to come in slower (if she's not eating frequently enough on them). You don't have to wait 2 hours to feed her...you can feed her and offer her your breast everytime she wakes up from a nap. Breast milk is a supply/demand thing...the more she requires of them the quicker your milk will come in. Have you called a lactation consultant? You're doing a great job, Kim! It is pretty stressful (at least I find it so) starting a new breastfeeding relationship and thinking in the back of your head that you're the one sustaining your wee babe now. It will all work out, I promise! edited for information/encouragement...

Praying your milk comes in full force...tonight! ETA...I agree with Kim about feeding her from both breasts at each feeding, particularly because she is a good nurser. THEN if she's still hungry, give her a bit of formula like th midwife suggested. Her sucking will help your breasts kick in much better than a pump will.

My LC for Nadia told me that when she had eaten off of both sides and still seemed hungry to go ahead and offer the first side again. She said the breasts are always producing milk and there will be some in there. Once I started drinking Mother's Milk Tea by Traditional Medicinals, which has fenugreek in it, my milk came in almost immediately. Just keep nursing. The more your breasts are stimulated, the faster it will come in. Keep hydrated, eat well and rest, rest will also help it to produce. Oh, and I will be praying.

My DS was 6 lbs, 6 oz. at birth & had some similar feeding issues. The advice given me was to nurse him from both breasts and THEN give him formula. Sounds as though each practice does things a little differently. At one point, I was also told to wake him EVERY 2 hours and feed him as he wasn't gaining weight properly. Well, I tried that for a night or two without him ever waking up. Finally I figured he would wake me up when HE was hungry. He refused to operate by someone else's schedule and would often only feed every 3 or 4 hours (and this was as a newborn). Obviously, he ended up growing fine. He's now 5 years old and weighs in around 43/44 pounds and is 44 inches tall. Those were his last measurements which puts him around the 90% for height and right in the middle for weight! I'll be praying for you and little Gwen. Earlier you mentioned that you would let us know the docs reasoning for the advice they have given; therefore, I'm eagerly waiting (esp. when you mentioned it had something to do with your birth story). Regardless, I will patiently wait until YOU are ready to write it up. Enjoy this time with your little girl. Before you know it, she'll be 5 like my son. It really does go THAT fast! ~God bless~

ORIGINAL: Sideways Glad to hear things are going better for you. I had to give my baby some formula in the hospital because he was getting dehydrated, and it didn't hurt our BFing relationship one little bit. Your medical team was right to be concerned. You're doing a great job! It didn't hurt our relationship in the beginning either, sometimes it is necessary.

Awww, thanks for the support, ladies!! It's been tough, but so, so, so wonderful!! Quick update and then I'm off for a nap! I can't believe Gwen is a week old tomorrow ... it's going by so fast! Brad has to go back to work tomorrow so my mom came up yesterday and is staying until at least Friday ... and probably coming up for nights on the weekend. Breastfeeding is going INCREDIBLY well - we were able to wean back the top-ups on Monday to 5 - 10 mL every other feed, and I was able to consistently pump ~ 5 mL between, so we were feeding her and topping her up with my milk ... such a difference in her poor little intestines! Yesterday they weighed her and she was up to 5 lb 13 oz - so only 2 oz away from birth weight!!! So no more top-ups and we're allowed to let her go 3 hours between feeds. It's been so nice so actually get some sleep in between My craziest update is that I managed to develop a blood clot! My midwives were (understandably) very concerned that it was a DVT (hello pulmonary embolism and 3 - 4 day hospitalization for heparin treatment), so we went to the ER yesterday and I had an ultrasound and such. Turns out it's very superficial, so we're treating it with rest, elevation, heat, compression, and anti-inflammatories - praise the Lord! It was a bit terrifying, though ... especially after the feeding issues and some CRAZY sleeplessness. Long story short, things have been brutal, but all is now well!
