What songs released 1979 or prior is your favorites and what artist's version is your fave?

for me. I think

The Lighthouse by Hinsons
Redemption Draweth Nigh by London Parris and The Apostles
O Happy Day, Turn Your Radio On, Learning To Lean by Blackwood Brothers
Reverend Everett Beverley and Sister Anna Laura by Kingsmen

just a few of mine from the golden era

hopperfan -> RE: fave song and artist? (5/20/2008 10:15:26 AM)

I love any of the songs by Dottie Rambo and the Happy Goodman Family.

Seaton -> RE: fave song and artist? (5/20/2008 10:25:52 AM)

A few random selections that I really enjoy from 1979/prior.

"Don't Be Knocking" - Kingsmen (Just In Time - 1976)
"He's Coming Again" - Happy Goodmans (The Legendary Goodmans - 1973)
"He Pilots My Ship" - Happy Goodmans (Leave Your Sorrows And Come Along - 1972)
"I Can Feel The Touch Of His Hand" - JD Sumner & Stamps (Live At Murray State - 1975)
"Is That The Old Ship Of Zion" - Kingsmen (Chattanooga Live - 1977)
"I've Got Confidence" - Downings (This Is How It Is Live - 1971)
"John The Revelator" - Teddy Huffam & Gems (Souled Out Live - 1977)
"Sun's Coming Up" - Rex Nelon Singers (Live - 1978)
"Tears Will Never Stain The Streets Of That City" - Rambos (There Has To Be A Song - 1975)
"That Day Is Almost Here" - Hemphills (In Action - 1973)
"That I Could Still Go Free" - Hinsons (Touch Of Hinson, Glimpse Of Glory - 1974)
"We Do Not Die" - Kingsmen (Chattanooga Live - 1977)
"You're Home To Stay" - Hopper Brothers & Connie (Try A Little Kindness - 1969)

**I better stop, I'm getting a little too carried away...[:D]

[:D] I think Seaton agrees with me that the songs of old are awesome songs.

I also think that list he listed could be mine as well.

Seaton -> RE: fave song and artist? (5/20/2008 10:33:58 AM)

A great song is a great song no matter which era it was recorded. My list could've really been a lot longer. You throw in the '80s, '90s and today yet and I would end up with a book by the time I was listing all my favorite songs...[:D]

TQ_Fan_4_Life -> RE: fave song and artist? (5/20/2008 10:38:05 AM)

agreed as well. but is interesting to see just what songs people love from old days. songs of today (((80's till now for me. ))) would really same songs for a lot. actually mine would probly be surprising because of the gap in years when I wasn't a follower of Christ.

Mrmusicfan -> RE: fave song and artist? (5/20/2008 2:51:08 PM)

I'd have to say some of these:

Born Again-Evie Tornquist-Karlsson
Sheltered in the Arms of God-Rambos/Downings
There Is a River-Jimmy Swaggart
Here They Come-Florida Boys
Anything by the Hinsons.. [:D]

danielmount -> RE: fave song and artist? (5/20/2008 4:28:34 PM)

A few that come to mind:

These are They - Happy Goodmans
Holy Hills - Happy Goodmans
Glory Road - Kingsmen
Anything by the Cathedrals from that era! "Mighty the Lord" comes to mind right now.

threepartharmony -> RE: fave song and artist? (5/20/2008 7:24:55 PM)

Jesus Will Outshine Them All - The Orrells
I Wouldn't Take Nothing for My Journey - Happy Goodmans
The Lighthouse - The Hinsons
Tears Will Never Stain the Streets of That City - Rambos
He Touched Me - The Gaither Trio
I Want to See Jesus - The Dixie Echoes
That Day is Almost Here - Blue Ridge Quartet
One Day at a Time - Thrasher Brothers
What A Beautiful Day - Happy Goodmans
After Calvary - Blue Ridge Quartet
Mama's Last Amen - Oak Ridge Boys

I don't think they would allow me to make a complete list. Space wouldn't allow such an answer. I agree that this would be the golden era of Gospel Music as it was called then. We have over a hundred LP's plus a number of cassettes. Among the groups would be the Inspirations, the Weatherford Quartet, The Florida Boys, the Kingsmen, and others. My prize is the 1959 release of "In The Garden" by the Weatherford Quartet. This one has Earl and Lily Weatherford, Glen Payne, Armond Morales, and Henry Slaughter. There has probably never been a better quartet assembled, or so said James Blackwood and Glen Payne. Now if I could just find a copy of "Just As Long As Eternity Rolls," Mark V release.....

kaelen7 -> RE: fave song and artist? (5/21/2008 9:12:36 AM)

I cant make a list that would be short enought to fit on the page, but IMHO the "perfect" Southern Gospel song will always and forever be "Oh, What a Savior" by The Statesmen. That song pretty much encompasses everything our relationship with the Lord is about.

DJSfromCleveland -> RE: fave song and artist? (5/21/2008 9:30:15 AM)

It would have to be something by the Statesmen or Blackwoods for sure. Then again , could be Kingsmen or Prophets or Rebels, or Oak Ridge or Blue Ridge or.............................[:)]

DeeAnnBailey -> RE: fave song and artist? (5/24/2008 2:48:40 AM)

I'll take Seaton's list and add

The entire 'Performance' album by the Oak Ridge Boys
"I Know" the Oak Ridge Boys
the entire'Sunshine & Roses' album by the Cathedrals
