I think for some families, especially the ones with more than one income, they aren't hurting as bad, but there are many families out there that live on one income and things were tight before gas went up. When you already live a simple lifestyle, it's hard to know where to cut back. I've seen a lot of people who have switched to shopping at Aldi to save money, but where do you go when you already shop at Aldi and grow a lot of your own food? It's hard to cut back any further.

Upon reflection, I do know what a Miele is. They used to manufacture a printing press. The gripper bars on one I ran almost took my thumb off. I suppose it truly would be disposable income that put a printing press in one's kitchen.

BUT - that wasn't why I logged on tonight. I wanted to tell about the gas war we had here in town. How low will they go? Last I heard it got to 2.34...

I was seeing 3.49 on my way to work today......(here on this discussion, on july 25, about 2 weeks ago, I "checked in" and reported 3.84).....

BUT, 2.34? REALLY?

WHERE are you in Texas? (seems like you've told me before....but I forget)....

Well, we cook all our meals at home with the frying pans, toaster and we will use the oven. What are SubZero, Miele and Wolf appliances? Oh, we DO have a microwave. Maybe that was bought with the disposable income we seem to have according to some.

We might be able to eat out 3 or 4 times a year if the money's right... Ball games? Not for this family... Do the have a WalMart in any of the malls? I know the one we go to is a stand alone store... My coffee is strictly home brewed with the brand that's on sale at the above mentioned store. I take a thermos full of it in to work with me...

Maybe I should have gone into the design aspect of printing instead of the operations side...

my point wasn't to "brag" or anything.....but, to raise a point...

Back when the previous regime was in power, during the 1998-2000 period, all was well, and the entire world, it seemed, was applauding the so-called "spectacular" economy that we were enjoying (as the previous administration enjoyed having the LUCK of being in office during the "dot com" boom that occurred)........though, not for me. that was a time of struggle.....i had just gotten married, and was working my way out of the "entry level salary" ranges...getting laid off frequently, since i didn't have much experience.....though, I wasn't supposed to have existed then. THAT administration didn't acknowledge that not everyone was "prospering" as was being "widely reported"....

then, during the 2002-2007 timeframe, economic growth was consistently quite strong, unemployment was low, and everything was "humming along" just fine. But, what did I constantly hear.......Unemployment is low, BUT.....Economic indicators are very strong, BUT.....doing all they could to discredit the progress, because how dare they even hint at any POSITIVE things going on .....(meanwhile, I was flourishing....along with my neighbors and everyone else i knew).....making HUGE leaps in compensation, and now, in 2008, more financially secure than ever....(not to mention being debt free).....and, being blessed beyond comprehension.......and, now, we have people "in power" (or those seeking it)...who want to believe that people like me do NOT exist....who want us to all believe that we are all "worse off" (which, I know is NOT true)....or, that somehow, my success is preventing the success of others...

hmmmm....

then, i find out a good friend of mine, who is a magazine editor here in town.....their publishing group just launched a magazine.....for teenage millionaires....(a segment of the population that is EXPLODING, she says)....kind of like a "Fortune" magazine written especially for them....giving relevant information and advice, especially since 99.99% of those who are in that category, are coming up from "low/moderate income families......but, then, they are not supposed to exist either....(until someone the media WANTS to give "credit" to is in office).....

they make printing presses?

I have printed on Heidelbergs, of course (who hasn't?).....

my current printer has an awesome Kodak NEXPRESS digital press.....and a few Komori's for "traditional" sheet-fed printing....

they are Southwestern Color Graphics here on the Fort Worth side of the world (sales office in Arlington.....printing plant in Keene, just south of Fort Worth)....

anyway...yeah, Miele makes vacuum cleaners, dishwashers, fridges, washers/dryers for the home.....the brand has REALLY taken off here in the U.S. over the past several years.

kind of an "addendum" to my previous post.....i know very few "two income" families....and, of those that are, it's certainly not because they are doing so out of necessity.....(but, it's a hallucination.....we don't exist.....it messes up some people's agenda)

One of the malls around here (none close than 30+ minutes) has an entire wing closed (about a third of the stores) except for Sears at the very end. It is hard to not feel like things are bad off when you see that sort of thing going on.

The $2.34 price came about because of the opening of a new Chevron station and the Shell station across the street got into a price war with them. Only those two (and maybe a third one nearby) had prices that low. The average here in Houston and the surrounding area is 3.60, but the station I buy my gas at is at 3.49 now.

Yes, Miele used to make printing presses many years ago. I think they got absorbed out by ManRoland (who also took over the Miller brand of presses) long ago. I'm not surprised that the Miele corporation is still in the business of manufacturing other goods.

I understand what you and the LA Times are trying to say about income. Yes, before this transplant to Texas several years ago my family had much disposable income, we were living "high on the hog" and well able to absorb the increase in gas prices from below a buck to well over a dollar. But since coming here we have had to make drastic changes, and I'm telling you that we are not alone in the fact that there is nothing left over at the end of the month, and even less with this latest increase in gas prices. Now perhaps if those of the nouveau rich class were to share that wealth... But that would be a socialistic premise that one side of the presidential campaigns seems to be making. I don't want what you have, I'll adjust, but I don't want the LA Times telling me that gas is more affordable now than in the 60's because of this "disposable" income they claim American's have.

It would be good for them to remember that there weren't as many cars on the road and people who depended on them. These are some of the same people who think that every man, woman, and teen needs a job, and every child needs ten after school activities, and mother's are bad if they don't volunteer for everything at school or go to all their kid's sporting events and plays and such... and then they complain about how much gas is being used to maintain this excellerated lifestyle that so many are trapped in.

Frankly I could care less about how much gas cost in the '60s. It is meaningless to me when I never knew what the '60s felt like... I wasn't even born yet!

I do remember that gas cost less than a third of my minimum wage income when I first got my car and had to pay for gas. Now it costs over half of minimum wage! That is a huge increase percentage wise!

The gas war station that had gas at 2.34 the day before yesterday was at 3.34 yesterday when I went by. No gridlock of traffic to get in.

It's usually cheaper when the refineries are out back.

And I thought the triangle was in the Caribbean, not Texas.

I thought she was talking about the "Texas Triangle" (the area between the metropolitan areas and outlying areas of Houston, Dallas and San Antonio) where gas prices are usually pretty cheap. But maybe I misunderstood.

There are several areas referred to as "triangle."

That'd be the refinery triangle. Yes, you'd think gas would cost less when all they have to do is drive it across the street...

Gas definitely ought to be cheap in that area!

.... well... I have a theory that things are more expensive here because most of the men work in the refineries and they have lots of $$ to spare... so the stores and gas stations feel free to charge more because they know people can afford to pay the prices...

.... it's just a theory, though!

You might be right.

A "boy" I dated in high school lives in Beaumont, and I've been surprised at how expensive some things are there. Dallas is way cheaper, but then Dallas has always had a great cost of living while having great wages. Let me put it this way -- opportunity will come up and slap you on the face in Dallas/Fort Worth. I always knew that, but coming back to visit from the Western Slope of Colorado makes it abundantly clear. It's generally have/have not where I live. The middle class is almost non-existent and shrinking all the time.
