stellaluna -> Bifocals (5/16/2008 9:25:50 AM)

I've been told I need bifocals. [sm=crystreams.gif] I don't know anyone with them, so can you guys tell me what it's like when you first start wearing them, how long it takes to get used to them, etc. Please?

stampinlady -> RE: Bifocals (5/16/2008 9:35:17 AM)

There, there, it will be alright.[sm=hug.gif] We're just getting old![:D]

I've noticed that my eyes have changed in the last year and need to go to the eye Dr. . I'm nearsighted and I'm having a hard time reading close. I tried on some bifocals at Target and almost bought a pair. A lady in my line told me that she just bought a pair at Walgreens instead of buying them at the Dr.'s office.

stellaluna -> RE: Bifocals (5/16/2008 9:39:31 AM)

I actually thought of that, because that's what my mom did. (She only needs glasses for reading.) BUT! Switching back and forth would be very hard for me because it's something to do with weak muscles in my eyes. I can focus near and I can focus far with my regular glasses, but there's a takes a few seconds to focus as I look up and down. He says that's the main reason I get eyestrain at work. [&:]

So I have to get bifocals. [sm=crystreams.gif]

laura... -> RE: Bifocals (5/16/2008 9:52:18 AM)

I had to change to bifocals about a year and a half ago. I got progressive lenses. Since I have to wear glasses all the time and not just for reading, I had to just put them on and pray that my eyes adjusted quickly.

For about a month I couldn't go into a grocery store without getting dizzy. One of the things you have to learn is to turn your head to look around and not just your eyes. Just moving my eyes back and forth to see the stuff on the shelves while walking down the aisles would get my head spinning.

The worst was going down steps or stepping off of a curb. The bifocal completely threw off my ability to judge the distance of the step. For awhile I had to hold onto a railing or my hubby and look straight ahead while stepping down.

The weirdest thing was any straight lines like door jams and wall corners were not straight. LOL!!

My eyes did adjust relatively quickly. The lines straightened up and the steps stopped moving away from me. I still can get a bit dizzy in stores if I'm not careful to turn my head not just my eyes. Old habits are hard to break. Now I can just correct myself and go on with my shopping instead of leaving the store before I either fall or throwup.

Memaw. -> RE: Bifocals (5/16/2008 10:05:58 AM)

About a month or so ago the eye doctor put me in them.
He suggested the progressive lens.
I wore them for a couple of days, nearly got in a car wreck (because the sides of the progressive lens make things look weird and you can't judge distances), took them back and am now back in single vision lens.

When I do decide to go to bifocal, I will go with the lined lens and not the progressive.

Kerrlaw -> RE: Bifocals (5/16/2008 10:36:19 AM)

I am a big fan of progressive lens, even though I had a little trouble adjusting to them (not as much trouble as Laura, but similar). After a couple of weeks I was fully adjusted to progressive lens bifocals. I would not want any other kind.

Mrs. Kerrlaw just put hers on and never had trouble from day one.

I still wear single vision for athletics such as racquetball, and if I watch TV in bed.

I am also a big fan of [sm=heart.gif]Walmart[sm=heart.gif] for glasses. Price is right and they will make them over if you are not happy at no charge, even if you just don't like the style. Places like Lens Crafters are faster, but more expensive, and they are also very accomodating.

If you go to a place such as Lens Crafters or Dr. Bizers, be sure and ask about what discounts they recognize. I know Lens Crafters has a bif AAA discount, and a friend said Dr. Bizers gave a nice discount on his grocery store (Food City) value card. Also check the websites for online coupons.

agapetos -> RE: Bifocals (5/16/2008 6:05:25 PM)

About 3 years ago. I started off with 2 different pairs of glasses (worked out cheaper for me) and I ended up going crazy switching them all the time.

I got transition lenses then and haven't looked back. I never had a problem getting used to them.

DustyLady -> RE: Bifocals (5/16/2008 8:02:04 PM)

I have worn the progressive lenses for years -- at least ten of them. They did take a little getting used to at first, but now I can't get along without them.

Unfortunately, it's a part of growing older.

Dusty

We're going shopping tomorrow. You guys have made me feel a little better.

JimboFletch -> RE: Bifocals (5/19/2008 4:12:09 PM)

I had 20/20 vision until my late 30s when I began to become near-sighted due to 10-12 hours PC programming and using small monitors since the early 80s. The Dr. gave me bifocals but I didn't need them for reading, I mainly needed them for driving. (I still take my glasses off when I get to work.) A couple of years ago I got a pair of progressive & transition lenses. As mentioned, they took a bit of getting used to, but they're fine now.

cow451 -> RE: Bifocals (5/20/2008 10:55:38 AM)

Generally, I've adjusted to them. But they are hard to deal with in working on projects around the house. You can't just move that overhead plumbing around so it is in focus.[:@]

stellaluna -> RE: Bifocals (5/20/2008 11:43:31 AM)

I still haven't had time to shop yet. I'm trying to be positive. [&:]

hotsaucygma -> RE: Bifocals (5/20/2008 12:16:12 PM)

I have the progressive lenses and never had a bit of trouble adjusting to them. But what I really love are my progressive lense contacts! I do still have just a little trouble seeing small print while wearing them, so I do wear my glasses if I'm going to be working with lots of numbers (then I can just take them off! [:D]), but otherwise I like both the contacts and glasses.

I got mine at lenscrafters. I like the ability to get them quickly and they do also have a relplacement policy if you get them and don't like them (probably most places do, but you have to wait so long at other places).

colliefan -> RE: Bifocals (5/20/2008 9:27:23 PM)

Have progressive lens with transitions shading. Only problem is trying to read small print.

LOL...I REFUSE to wear them...I chose instead to have two pairs of glasses....lol.

Covaan_Meshuga -> RE: Bifocals (5/21/2008 2:09:44 AM)

I wear progressive lenses and have not had a problem.

Annie64 -> RE: Bifocals (5/28/2008 7:41:54 PM)

I've been wearing bifocals for about four years now and hardly think about them anymore (except for now after reading this thread). But my dh started wearing them only a few months ago. A week or so ago I discovered he was changing back to his old glasses to watch TV. I told him he needed to wear his bifocals all the time to train his eyes where to look, but he isn't going to do it. Maybe someday, but right now, he just isn't inclined.

I have to eat my words on this. My glasses are new, and I have found that when I back up, I must take them off, because I cannot see properly while using the rearview mirrors.

Wow. I hope that doesn't happen to me, because without glasses I wouldn't be able to drive at all! [sm=eek.gif]

We haven't had a chance to go shopping yet, and I figure we might as well wait until after the first when it's payday. Cha-ching.

Covaan_Meshuga -> RE: Bifocals (5/29/2008 1:08:05 AM)

It irritates me. I am at a point at which the opthalmologist, optician, and I discussed whether or not I really needed glasses. They decided that I needed them for reading but not really for driving, although I might see some improvement, so the decision was up to me. I chose to go ahead and get the whole shebang in one pair of glasses, rather than having just reading. Unfortunately, backing is a problem, while using the glasses for rear view mirrors but not a problem for rear-viewing while driving.

I noted the problem because our driveway is long and narrow, and I back into it. I just pass the back corner of the house, then have to zig to head toward my carport, then zag to go into the carport. (My little car will make it, but I can barely get my husband's van to go in there.) Driving this is done using mirrors, not by turning and looking out the back.

I never hit anything, but since I got my glasses, I noticed it was a little more difficult. One day, I took them off and zipped right back. It's the glasses. I guess they just don't work that well for mirrors.
