Some children behave better than others, thats for sure. But the ones who become disruptive can be taken out, corrected, and brought back. They have to learn.

I still think it is importen for them to be a part of the worship service, as stated in my first post.

That beinging said, isn't it great that we are able to choose a church where we feel we can worship best.

Problem is, sometimes it takes an usher going up to the pew and suggesting to the parent that they take the kid out for a while. Some parents don't see their kid's misbehavior. They are blind to it.

I visited a church a couple of years ago where two babies where crying loudly, and a couple of toddlers were walking around the sanctuary. The pastor stopped in mid sermon to comment that that church appreciates the "sounds of life". I suppose he saw the looks on the faces of people actually trying to hear the sermon. I did not go back a second time. Sounds of life are fine in the nursery, or out in the parking lot with the rod of correction being applied, but not while God's Word is being preached.

Funny how when the subject of tongues comes up, order in the sanctuary is always next...why not in this issue as well?

I can tell ya. Permissive parenthood. The kids run the asylum today. Fathers are absent either in the family or by not going to church.

Self control today seems to be defined as....as long as no one complains its ok.

The ME, ME, ME culture has seeped its way so much into christianity that going one hour a week without a bottle of water stuck in your face is considered legalistic.

Control your children...and yourself....and concentrate on the sermon and praising your Lord. ( Now I was saved in a charismatic church and we vocally praised the Lord throughout the sermon but that is not what I am talking about when I say control. What I mean is, the reason why you are there is GOD, not yourself and if you cannot control your urges to talk or text on your cell phones or whatever else you do that is outside of the reason why you are there, then do not come. )

I would disagree. The reason we go to church is to worship God as a community and to minister to others. If it was just about God we could all stay home and do it in our own houses.

ETA: and when you are part of a community there will be disruptions and people will be human and children will act like children. True, if they are not being relatively well behaved they should be taken out and dealt with. However, a child who squirms a little or asks a question about the service a little too loudly should be expected as they are children. I don't think you should expect to feel like you are alone or in a room full of well behaved adults when you are in a church service.

I want to hear the sermon. If that is disrupted by unruly children, or ignorant adults (the people that answer their cell phones when they ring and say "hello" instead of hurriedly turning them off) then I have wasted my time, the pastor has wasted his, and Satan has a field day.

The belt applied to the rear end in the parking lot is a school of theology all parents should consider when dealing with unruly kids. Not the squirmy child, the child that sleeps on the pew or colors quietly.

I agree, the kind of things you are describing shouldn't happen. however, there are those here (not necessarilyt his thread) who have said that all kids should be in their own classes if they can't sit absolutely still and silent. That's what I'm complaining about.

Why shouldn't a child be expected to behave in public?

If they are too young to understand the need for respect in the sanctuary then they are too young to be there.

...and the reason why we do this is God.

church is not a bar, so I don't think it should be off limits. Perhaps the reason people think it should be is due to parents not keeping their kids reasonably quiet.

I am not a fan of a lot of other things going on during worship elsewhere at the church...that takes adults out of the services, so they are missing out too.

I think its more than a question of discipline.

Can a child understand the meat of a sermon?

Are all sermons G rated? By that I mean, some sermons should be adult only, or the flock isn't being fed properly.

Can children learn more about Jesus in an age appropriate setting? Teachings on their level.

I would agree with SonInMe, because we do occasionally have sermons that we are told (ahead of time) children are not to participate in.

Regarding the issue of children behaving badly, for a lack of a better way of terming it, some kids have behavioral issues (ADD, hyperactive, etc.) that parents don't necessarily have control over. To an extent, but not completely. I have one of these kids. He is significantly better than when he was younger, but trying to get a seat in the back so as not to be disruptive to others is not always possible ... the people who want to sneak out as soon as possible are taking up all the back rows. But I have seen lots of parents take the kids out when they act up (myself included).

We save a few rows in the back for mothers with young children etc.
