I understand the reasoning, shadow. I was saying that to make sure people know that having chicken pox doesn't necessarily make one immune to it. I see so many who think getting it once is all people need.
About getting it multiple times, it depends on one's individual immune system especially. Since it can lie dormant, something that compromises the immune system may let the herpes get out of countrol. I see that a lot in older people who end up with shingles. Other than that, I imagine exposure can cause multiple cases, and everyone is probably exposed to it in different rates and ways. People down here don't seem to get it more than people anywhere else; I don't really know of any outbreaks right now, even in schools, daycares, etc.

Solo, I am one of those people who contracted chicken pox more than once .... I had it three times, actually. The first time I was 6 (got me out of school for summer break a week early!) The second time, I was in high school, and the third time I had just finished up first year at college (I spent a bunch of time with my one professor -- we went to the gym together and everything -- and we both came down with those lovely spots) Even now, if you do a titer on me, it shows zero immunity to varicella.

Oh ... as for vaxxing for other things, my boys have all had really nasty reactions to the MMR, so until Ontario separates them into individual components -- and funds them like the others -- the kids won't be receiving any more of that!

When is the rotavirus recommended?
Addison hasn't had it yet (she's 16 mos) but I think I want her to have it. She doesn't go to daycare, but does spend lots of time with her young cousins.

Rotavirus oral vaccine is done at 2, 4, and 6 months. Because of lack of research, it should not be started after 3 months or completed after 8 months, according to The Vaccine Book.

Ha, Ha, NHGIRL, fancy meeting you here. I think that the new rotavirus vaccine came out just about the time that Addison was born. I'm not sure. When Bethany was in the hospitalized last year, the nurses said that it was a new version of the vaccine. That's why she never got it. I had never heard of it.

Okay so today I let them give my son the HIB, pc, DTaP, and Roto vaccination. It was extremely stressful. Extremely, but it's done. He handled it like a trooper! Whined a little, but that's it. Everyone, including the nurse, was surprised.
And, on a side note - he's ten pounds 12 ounces now! Exactly five pounds since he was born 11 weeks ago!

I just got the The Vaccine Book: Making the Right Decision for Your Child by Dr. Sears yesterday. I also got a book called What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Children's Vaccinations by Dr. Stephanie Cave. I am reading the info on each vaccine in both books to help me decide. I have only read about the HIB vaccine so far. We will not be having David vaccinated against Hep B as a young child. We haven't decided on any of the others yet. David will not be in childcare or the church nursery. I hope to exclusively breastfeed him also. I think Donna's plan looks good, but Chris and I are still reading and discussing.

Just to clarify Emily - that you do know that the HIB vaccine and Hep B are two different things?

Yep. Sorry I wasn't clear. I didn't read the chapter about Hep B, but we know we won't be doing that one. I have read the chapters about HIB but we haven't decided yet.

Blame it on your preggy brain .... and then once the precious one arrives, you can use baby brain as an excuse for the next millenia! I guess I should amend my schedule for Gabby, she hasn't had any vax's since like 4-5 months. Hmm. I think I'll do one more set of what she has already received and then have her titered. She won't be getting an MMR until she's 3 or 4, as those diseases are not really harmful in early childhood. I will however get an MMR booster for myself.

I remember being really poorly with measles when I was little. Can't remember how young I was though.
I thought complications with measles were quite common - even possibly going so far as pneumonia and encephalitis?

According to Dr. Sears, measles are most dangerous for those who are too young to be vaccinated for them anyway, and for pregnant mothers (and their unborn babies) without enough immunity of their own.
We're also waiting until after 3 for the MMR and then will probably separate them.
Ryanne, will you post your schedule, including what you've already done? I'm curious.

Your schedule so far is similar to the one I posted on the last page. Cool! 
Hep A...rarely recognized in kids because it doesn't affect them as badly as teens/adults. Passed when an infected person goes to the bathroom and doesn't wash their hands (mainly in daycares and restaurants  ). If exposure is known in an outbreak, an antibody shot can be given within two weeks of exposure. Children in 3rd world countries get it very young and have lifelong immunity. Not given routinely to children until 2006. Definitely want to get it before any travel to 2nd or 3rd world countries...anywhere the water quality would be questionable would be a good thing to go by, IMO, because it can be passed through contaminated water also.
We'll wait until 11-13 for this one and Hep B, but will get it then because we plan on our kids going on missions trips with church.

Wow...that is tough.  I think I might find an American missionary in Mexico and ask them about it. See how they deal with the risk to their little kids, if they have them. That's my only thought...and I think there are a couple missionaries in Mexico here on forums, so maybe start there if you can't think of anyone.
Do you know how your doctor feels about delaying vaccines? If he/she is okay with it, they may have some good advice for you too. If they are against delaying, even if they are willing to do it, then their info probably won't be as useful.
If you do go, can you bring all your own food and drinks at least for the baby? That might be a solution...and some kids don't really eat much at that age anyway.

*I* would Vax like normal and take as much jarred/canned food with me as possible even though it isn't ideal at 9 months(or for anyone). Gabby is nine months now and really isn't drinking much other then formula and occasionally some water or decaf/unsweetened tea from a sippy cup. I would probably just nurse instead of offering any water. Really, Hep A would be the only thing I would be concerned about with an infant in a resort. It's not like your going on a missions trip and are going to be mingling with the local kids, ya know?

It's a pretty cruddy situation, eh?? I was thinking same as you, Ryanne, that Hep A is really the only issue, and if the babe wasn't touching the water or eating fresh foods and veggies, it wouldn't be an issue. I don't know if they allow jarred/canned food in luggage - I guess they'd have to?

My doc has many people that *don't* vaccinate, but said that she's never heard of anyone to delay vaccinations - but she's willing to do it. She might have some good info ... maybe I'll ask my m/w, too.

I'm hoping this is the case, as it would eliminate my concerns! If babe was still exclusively bf'ing, I wouldn't even worry about it, but because we're not planning to feed cereal or canned food and do baby-led solids, it kind of makes it hard ...
