tysdaddy -> Beginning Guitarist - Need advice from a shredder (5/13/2008 12:27:48 AM)

Those of you who play guitar . . . My son has decided to pick up the guitar after countless hours of Guitar Hero. (Before you start screaming . . . yes, he knows real guitar is nothing like a five-button controller, and yes he knows it will be harder to learn . . . he's not stupid.) He's fallen in love with his new Ibanez I picked up for him recently. I've bought him some books and whatnot, and he's actually taking to it quite nicely. Learning some chords. Getting used to playing around and actually creating music and not noise (although he does go off on his "Hey Dad, does this sound like Tom Morello?!" kick every now and then). But, of course, he's got tons left to learn. So, for those of you who are musically inclined, give me some ideas on where to get him started. He's learning some songs by tab (he's got Iron Man down - except for the solo, of course) and is learning others. But he wants to learn a whole song. Something he can get good at and gain some confidence. Right now, lessons aren't an option. The pocketbook isn't that deep. But he's got heart, and he's an excellent "hands on" learner. Any suggestions on beginner tab books? Best magazines/books for beginners. He's a rocker, electric, so no acoustic books just yet. His hero? John Petrucci of Dream Theater. How's that for setting your goal WAY up there!!! So, let 'er rip, shredders. All helpful ideas are welcome and appreciated.
