Bernie Ward admits to child porn in plea deal

SAN FRANCISCO -- Bernie Ward, the most prominent liberal voice on Bay Area talk radio for more than two decades, admitted Thursday to distribution of child pornography by e-mail in a plea deal that will send him to federal prison for at least five years.

Ward, 57, a former Roman Catholic priest, was a fixture on KGO-AM 810 for three hours every weeknight, known in recent years for his fervent denunciations of President Bush and the war in Iraq during his news talk show. He also hosted "God Talk," a Sunday morning program on religion, and was a prolific fundraiser for the station's charity drives.

But his career disintegrated Dec. 6 with the unsealing of a federal grand jury indictment, issued three months earlier, that charged him with two counts of distributing and one count of receiving Internet images of child pornography. KGO fired him Dec. 31.

At a 30-minute hearing in federal court in San Francisco, Ward admitted he was guilty of a single charge of distributing child pornography, saying it involved "exchanging an image of a minor engaged in sexually explicit activity" in December 2004. The plea agreement he signed, quoted in court, contained an admission that he had sent between 15 and 150 pornographic images via e-mail.

FOR THE REST

Funny, I don't see this being covered nearly anywhere. Certainly not as much as I know if he had been a conservative radio talk show host.

This also took place in San Francisco Earthless. San Francisco's morals are to California's what California's are to the country. I found this quite interesting but quite normal for San Francisco to:

quote:

The case was prosecuted by the Justice Department in Washington, D.C., after the U.S. attorney's office in San Francisco bowed out for unstated reasons. The department issued a brief statement describing Ward's plea agreement and had no further comment.

Not even the feds there want to take a case like this up. : /

Disgusting... I called his "God Talk" show a few times to debate him... He was Catholic, and I believe a former priest. He railed the Catholic Church regarding the its sex scandal... Go figure...

The obvious blunt bias in the media with this story is really something else. If this had been Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, or Mark Levine it would be on the front page of every paper and TV broadcast.

And that is not taking consideration that none of the three named above have a religious talk show as well. Can you imagine the uproar and coverage?

If this had been Bill Bennett, ( my favorite talk show host ) He would have been metaphorically beheaded on the liberal media alter, with Chris Matthews being the axe weilding executioner.

As a Californian, I can't say I appreciate that statement. People think CA is all liberal, because they think of only the coast, but if you come inland, to Kings County (my county), Tulare County, Fresno County, the dessert, etc., you'll actually find the majority fairly conservative.

Also, in spite of CA's problems, we are the bread basket of the world. Yes, we have Hollywood, but we produce more agriculture than many of the other agricultural states put together. Even if we broke off as our own country rather than a state, we would still be the 6th most powerful country in the world.

As far as the original post, though, that stinks, and yes, he should be getting more negative publicity. If this were Arnold Shwartzenager, or someone whose last name was Bush, they would be all over it.

As someone who originated in Iowa, I dispute your claim as the 'breadbasket of the world', unless of course you think the world makes it's bread out of grapes and pistachios. [;)]

People think I'm a stupid redneck cause I'm from Ohio and Bush got our votes in 2004. ; ) It doesn't bother me though.

Uh, we grow a lot more than grapes and pistachios. And I wasn't necessarily meaning wheat in particular for bread in particular. I just meant we supply much of the world's food. Not to mention we produce a lot of beef and cotton.

But to tie this in to the original topic. That radio host probably doesn't know any of that. He probably thinks the whole state is the same sin city as San Francisco, but it's not.

Indeed, the media's in a quandry here. Their lust for pounding the Catholic Church and their lust for defending liberal media personalities are in conflict. Not that this dude's Catholic clergy, let alone an orthodox Catholic in good standing, but why should facts get in the way of a good story?

Just making sure it's understood that those of us in the grainbelt were feeding the world when Californians were still relying on gold and moving pictures as their primary means of income.

OK, you have a point, there. But that was then, this is now.[8D]JK. Anyway, we better get back to the original topic before we get in trouble![;)]

And yes, I'm embarassed for my state re this guy.

We are the country's leading suppliers of (are you ready for this) cotton! We even beat out Texas. (Cotton Link USDA) We also supply citrus, avocados, and a whole lot of other stuff. If you take highway 5 through the San Joaquin valley you'll see literally hundreds of miles of nothing but farms on each side. But then, you've never traveled the Golden State, have you.

Do some research before you make such a statement! You usually don't put your foot in your mouth that bad Jack![;)]

Cotton, citrus, avocados...you folks eat some odd bread in California. I don't think you are helping your case that you all aren't a little nuts.
