Does anyone record lectures with a digital recorder? I never have before, but want to be able to next semester. I definitely want a digital recorder, but have no idea what to get.

Does anyone use one who can steer me in the right direction?

My dad uses one. He loves it. I know he picked it up at Wal*Mart, but I don't know what kind it is right now. When he calls again (he's out of town), I'll ask him.

I did last semester, since I had my laptop in class taking notes, I decided to use GarageBand to record it as well. It came in handy during finals, that's for sure.

I never did, and I'm not in school now. But if I was, I would get a Pulse smartpen. It's a pen that has a camera and digital recorder on it. As you take notes, it records the lecture. The camera follows tiny dots on your paper, allowing the audio to be synced with your notes. You can use the pen to "click" on your paper, and the lecture will begin replaying at the point when you made the note.

I don't plan on opening my laptop in class unless I have time to work on something. I'm much faster at taking notes by hand than typing, so I think a small digital one would be best for my needs. I mainly want it for things I miss when they are lecturing too fast. I often end up doing some shorthand then later can't remember what I meant. [8|] I have 18 units next fall, so I figured if I ever needed a back up, it's now!

Oh wow! That's pretty cool! More than I want to pay to record something, but it's a cool idea!

I did it once. Found it easier to just take notes by hand.

Some teachers didn't allow it though. I'm sure a place like office max or staples would sell them.

Now the schools are recording their lectures as podcasts.. so look to see if your professor will do that.

I think it will be for me too because I've always done it that way. What I want it for is for when I make my study notes for exams...then if I missed any info I can pick it up on the recorder. I've also had a couple of professors that have great lectures, but write nothing down and don't lecture in the traditional way of outline form. I love hearing about their experiences more than note or book lecture, but it's often hard to make concrete notes that way.

So far, I haven't ran into a single professor that has not allowed the recorders. There are always at least 3-4 students in every class that use them. All the professors here ask is that you let them know if you plan on recording.

I have seen them at Staples. I just have no idea what I'm getting, how big of one I need, etc.

I briefly looked at the ones on staples.com

Any digital one will do.. they recorded 144 hours and up.. that's plenty of room.
I'd get the one you could download to your computer..

144 hours would be great. I'll have about 17 hours a week of lecture and I doubt I'll record all of each class.

A suggestion ... while I like the thought of using a digital recorder for lectures, #1 Make sure the prof would allow it (I had a few classes where the professor had no-recording rules). #2 If you are a visual person as well as an auditory, if the prof uses an overhead projector or anything, ask him/her if you could possibly get a photocopy of that overhead (at your own cost, of course)

When I was in college, I worked part-time as a note-taker for some of the LD students, and this is what the school had told me to do (request copies of overheads, etc)

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't have any visual, auditory, or learning problems at all, so I don't need them to make special allowances or anything. I just would like to be able to hear the lecture again for when preparing for exams. Some of my professors cover so much information, and I wouldn't mind a second time through to make sure I really got it all in notes. I'll definitely check with the professors before I record anything.

If asked some profs even put their notes or power points online so students can look back through the course unit by unit, topic by topic, when needed. As far as recording I did back about 14years ago with a mini tape recorder, now I borrow recorded notes from friends in same class and download them.

The Zoom H2 seems to be pretty popular for on-the-go recording, but at $200 it might be overkill for what you're doing.

I think I'll go with a $30 cheapie from Staples. Even the small ones ahve more than enough time for what I'll need.

But that's for another semester. Mine ended today! [:D]
