No I haven't tried the slaw yet, My stomach isn't up to that. For the next three days I eat bland food, creamed soups, mac and cheese, toast.

As for your thoughts on Pengie's daughter, we are all in that boat to some extent, some of us will see the fruit in this life, some of us won't. I tried so hard to save my kids from suffering until someone explained to me that their suffering is in God's hands too. He is using it tomake them the unique individual he designed them to be and because of that suffering they will meet a need or fill a void specifically for them to fill. Is hard though.

Dove, I agree that suffering is in God's hands. I know it's not a popular notion, but I believe the Bible makes it very clear that God brings both the good and the bad to us for his own purposes. To me, that speaks far more of a loving God than one who only brings good because it means that he is in total control. He uses suffering to shape us and usually to bring us closer to him. There are so many places where God bemoans the fact that though he brought pain and suffering to his people, they did not turn back to him. So yeah, we can trust God with our children.

I have to say, however, that despite what I wrote just now, it's hard to understand things like that gruesome murder on the Greyhound. Where was God in that? But I have to trust that he IS in control and that ALL things work together for good for those who love God--even though everything else I see may contradict that.

It is very hard to understand such tragic events that seem pure evil, like Greyhound bus, World Trade Centers. To think that people in other countries live with this terror every day all their lives. God does use it and his school can be hard at times, but these are opportunities to teach his truth and his wisdom and his perseverence for us through all things. Trust, trust, trust.

Has anyone been looking at clothes for school this year? Gee wiz what prices. I told the kids each one new outfit for first day. I'm waiting until school eve to see if prices drop in the next two weeks. Was interesting to read in USA Today this week how people are cutting costs for this fall as compared to other years. Their 'now' budget was our last year budget. I fortunately never school shopped for a full wardrobe when homeschooling so I have never bitten into the logic. I just pick up what kids need as they need it when I find it on sale. I am also becoming well versed in mission shopping.

We will be homeschooling again this year, so I 'lucked out' on the back to school shopping for once! She enjoys doing school on her jammies. .

One thing that is concerning me tho - this is her Junior year and I'm not sure how to go about getting her lined up for her ACT and SAT exams?

Pengie, there is a homeschooling forum here at CW. Why don't you start a thread there and ask? I haven't a clue what the answer to your question is--though Dove might know.

Hi Maggie, Pengie, Dovelight, Zondie and anyone who I may have missed!

Maggie, another friend of mine also from Canada mentioned what had happened with the bus also. My only thought as to why someone would do that would either be that they were high on drugs, possessed or just didn't have any regard for human life at all.

Maggie,Do you live near Crowe's Lake? Had an invite to come up for a week, but these next two weeks before school are very busy with hard to schedule appointments. I hope to take the children to the shore over Labor Day weekend.

Pengie, I signed my son up for his tests on the internet. Locate a site and date near you and register him. I was able to have him attend testing at a local private school with a smaller class since this type of testing was not a common experience for him. He took the PSAT twice and both the ACT and SAT. If she's a junior this year, you need to check on dates now and get her in.
Google it, but in the mean time I'll try to find the site. You will need your states homeschool ID #. You'll need to get that from a homeschool state info center??? Ours was CHAP Christian Homeschool Association of PA. Or one of your homeschool diploma programs. Who is the main homeschool info network for your state? I think I contacted the SAT Board to confirm the # as well. That was a couple of years ago. But it can all be done now on the internet.

The news was global. CNN and BBC both carried the story. I expected as much. This sort of thing doesn't happen often anywhere! The murderer was already in court today. He made no eye contact with anyone and didn't speak--just nodded to the judge's questions. It's expected that his lawyer will plead insanity and unable to stand trial. I agree with you, Mike. It sure sounds like possession to me. "Psychotic" was the word one of the news stories used. The thing is, there can be people like Mr. Li wherever we go. We can never be sure that we won't encounter someone ready to do to us what he did to his victim. But we can't hide from the world. We simply must trust God otherwise we'd go insane with fear.

Hi Maggie, yeah, I can think of at least 3 incidents in recent years where people have done very heinous things on buses and trains also.

Oh Dove, I missed your post about Crowe's Lake. Crowe's Lake, Manitoba? North Dakota? Minnesota? Ontario? Do you have a friend there? If you're going and I'm half-decently close to it, I'd love to meet you.

I did a Google for "Crowe's Lake." There's one in Georgia and one in Oregon. Both are more than 1000 miles away. Not close. Maybe there is another?

Dove, I'm so glad you have the info Pengie needs. Whew!

Hi Maggie, This Crowe's Lake is in Canada, but we are unable to come this year.
I am considering making it a family week next year when they come. I'll ask for
it's specific location. Sorry, didn't realize there were so many!

Our friends meet with a group of family and friends for two weeks there every
year, lots of sailing, swimming, nice lake I understand.

Hi Maggie,

I have been seriously disturbed by what happened on the Greyhound bus. I hope that young man knew God, no one deserves such a tragic fate here on earth.

I believe this is the first time we've had to deal with something such as this as a national collective. We hear of these things happening but they just don't seem to happen here in a sphere that everyone is a part of. Obviously, this happening more often wouldn't make it any easier, I'm not even sure if I'm making myself clear.

I attended university in Ottawa for four years. For four years I travelled back and forth between Ottawa and Toronto on the Greyhound bus. I think of the number of people I sat beside.

More and more gruesome details continue to come out and it makes me question where God is. And I hate when I do that. He is there, with His arms open waiting to receive that young man and waiting to comfort the friends and family he has left behind. I pray that they are willing to receive Him as well. The man responsible for this has a wife back in Edmonton. I pray she too knows God.

That's so terrible! I hadn't heard about what happened on the Greyhound bus. I can't understand how or why somebody would do something like that! Those poor people!

That's too bad you can't go this year. It would be good for you and the kids to have a break and some different scenery. There's no Crowe's Lake in Canada according to maps.google.com but there is a Crowe Lake in Ontario and my guess is that that's the place you're thinking of. As far as places in Canada go, it's not that far from where you live. But it's more than 1000 miles away from me. Mind you, I have a sister who lives not far from there who says I never visit often enough.

Hey Lexie! Good to see you here! There was a bit of a bio in today's paper and no mention of a belief in Jesus. I would expect that there would be if it was something that marked his life. But his parents haven't been interviewed or mentioned yet--just his friends. He had been texting with one friend on the whole trip from Edmonton and had texted her just ten minutes before he was killed. She knew there was a problem and even phoned the RCMP to find out if it was him but they wouldn't say--probably couldn't until they had contacted his parents. There's no obituary for him today either.

And no, this is not an easy thing for anyone. We just don't have these sorts of things happen in Canada. It wouldn't make it any more acceptable if we did but I guess we get acclimatized and less shocked regarding crimes that happen often regardless of how horrendous they are. Having it happen so close to home makes a difference too.

I don't think it's wrong to question where God is in the midst of this. I think it's a good question that deserves asking. We can be praying for Mrs. Li, for Tim McLean's family and friends and for all the witnesses and even those having to deal with his body. I can't imagine what it must be like for Tim's mother. How does one go on when one's child has been murdered like this? Murder is bad enough but this? [a tad later:] Tim's mom is on an Alaskan cruise. Dad has been trying to reach her.

http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2008/08/01/stabbing-victim.html?ref=rss [Warning: there are a couple things in that article that, if your stomach turns easily, you won't want to read.]

Thanks for the hug, Trish.

Maggie, I'd love to come this year too. But we have the followups for daughter's heart tests, and these guys are hard to get in with, and young son has two visitations scheduled with his daddy who himself has been out of town for the past two weeks. Son needs this time. We have only three weeks before school starts here and it seems so short. Now I'm panicing as my summer short list is not completed. Trying to be realistic with my energy and time.

I am beginning to bounce back from this chemo. Had a nice long nap in a quiet house - children are all gone to friend's. Nauseau was not as bad this time, with new meds. Praising God for all the advances in chemo therapy these past years.

I'm glad you're bouncing back so quickly, Dove. That's great news! And yeah, your daughter's heart issues are far more important than a trip to the lake. I guess time with his dad is important for your son too. {{{{{{{{Dove}}}}}}}}

Maggie, it was here on your thread, where I first heard anything about the Greyhound murder. As you've said, it's been all over the news since this horrendous action occurred. None of us could ever grasp the reason(s) of why such a horrid thing like this happens. But it does. Everyday. Somewhere in this big universe (that belongs to God), sin shows it's ugly face. I so look forward to the day when Jesus puts a stop to ALL sin! And it does my heart good to know that even the worst of criminals, will look on the Lord and bow on their knees and confess with their mouth that, HE IS LORD!

As awful as it is for the victim's family, I can't help feeling for the murderer's family too. There will be so much attention given to them.

Dove, I'm so glad that you're recovering so quickly from this lot of chemo.

Amen!

Every knee will bow and declare Jesus is Lord of all but I don't believe that every one will do so willingly. Satan too will bow his knees and agree that Jesus is Lord. The glory and the dread of the Lord will be too much for them. They will not be able to stand in God's presence but will fall to the ground involuntarily.

Yes, Trish. I'm especially praying for Mr. Li, his wife and those who know them. There was an article in today's paper about Mr. Li. He came to Canada from China four years ago and lived in Winnipeg with his wife (not sure if she came with him or he met her here or what). They were embraced by a very well-known church here in the city and many people made them part of their families, having them over for Christmas dinner, taking them to their cottages at the lake, etc. For a while, Mr. Li was custodian of the church.

The church is now looking at how they can reach out and help Mr. Li, bless their hearts! I can't imagine what it must be like, however, for those who knew him and opened their homes to him. I am so thankful to God that whatever overcame him on the bus did not happen when he was with any of these dear people. I hope the church CAN continue to minister to him and to his wife (if she returns to Winnipeg). What he did was heinous but God's grace and mercy is even for him. I know I've been praying for him much. There will be many to support Tim's family but how many will be there for the Lis?

You're welcome and no, I do not know them at all. But I do know the church that reached out to them and have friends who go there (and have attended special events there myself). It is a huge church and unlikely that my friends were part of those who knew the Lis.

This is a copy of the article in this morning's newspaper: http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/story/4207974p-4800217c.html It talks about Mr. Li's connection with a Winnipeg church. On the evening news was a further discussion with the church where it was repeated that they want to do what they can to help and support the murderer. The spokesman (I heard but didn't watch so I don't know if it's a pastor or not) said that when he worked for the church he gave them no reason to think anything negative about it. They've also been in touch with Mrs. Li, who is really afraid of how all this will affect her future. Of course the church also prayed for the family and friends of Tim McLean.

Another article
