It's just so obvious that it's hurting him. He avoids sitting on his bum, he crawls around and then when he goes to sit, he gets back up on his knees. And every time I have to clean his bum he just winces and cries. He's really whiney. I can tell he just hurts

I'm going to the pharmacy soon, so I'll ask the pharmacist what he thinks.

Yolanda, if he won't even sit on his bottom then I would give him some pain killers. Although something like dermoplast might be more effective.

If you think it's yeast then you could just spread his bum with plain yogurt.

How did your babies begin scooting and getting ready to crawl?

Reagan would push with her arms, and end up moving backwards. That seems to be how I remember my sisters learning too.

Lincoln has mastered rocking and kicking and moves forward. It's the funniest thing. He's hit his face twice now rocking forward into furniture. He's not on hands & knees; he just rocks slighty side to side, but somehow ends up moving forward.

He's 5 months old, and can't sit up yet, but LOVES this scooting business.

What is Dermoplast? I've never heard of it.

I'm starting to think it's not yeast. It looks more like a burn, and he's had diarrhea the last couple of days. There's little red spots, but they aren't raised, just red spots. And it's just on his bum.

Prudent, isn't it fun watching them discover how to get around? It's so cute! Chase never sat up on his own until the day he started crawling on hands and knees!

Yolanda. If it's a burning rash, which is very likely with the diarrhea...I have a suggestion. It's kinda wierd, but it works wonders for me
Desitin cream
a bottle of plain malox (an antacid...do you have it there?)

Mix some of each until creamy/pasty

spread on his bum every diaper change. Works because the antacid cuts the acid in his poop and pee, so the desitin can heal up the rash.

I wouldn't post it, but you could email it to me if you want. PM me if you don't have my email.

You can do both dermoplast and an oral pain reliever. I prefer ibuprofen because it is an anti-inflammatory. Bad diaper rash and teething are the two things I never mind medicating for, because I know the pain is not helping them and is only going to make us both more miserable.

Mine usually start by getting on hands and knees and rocking back and forth. I think they usually end up moving backwards before they figure out forwards.

dH took Nathan to the store with him today, as I was not feeling well. The cashier said that all the babies this morning look tired. I wonder why?????

dH is running around like mad. He's doing a big family meal (late lunch) today, and he goes waaaayyy beyond the typical barbecue. It's a real production, but he has fun doing it.

yes yes yes!!!! Some kind of liquid antacid should cut the burning acidic poops that is burning his skin...and should allow it more time to heal...esp since he has diarrhea. I personally wouldn't mix it with desitin cream...because of the ingredients in it (zinc oxide) it might still burn. I would however pour the liquid antacid onto his bum and see if that helps him.

dermoplast is a topical spray pain killer type stuff. Here they give it to women when they have a baby if they need it for minor pain in the area of stitches down there. It will kill the major pain without having to be dosed up on meds.

It is a spray on pain reliever. If you can find it there, it would be in the first aid aisle at the pharmacy, with the bandaids, triple antibiotic cream, etc.

That's similar to the concoction cindybode has talked about them using on NICU babies with rash.

I might try that!

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone!

When my third was small, he had the worst rash I've ever seen when cutting his top two teeth. He seriously looked like he'd been burned all over his butt. Blisters, open sores and blood. It was BAD.
The malox, desitin mix cleared it up in 2 days

The stuff I'm getting mixed up at the pharmacy is what they use at the children's hospital here. I'm not sure what's in it, it's creamy and brown. I'm going to ask today what's in it before i use it.

Dermoplast, would it be something like Solarcaine?

Thanks!

I don't usually like pictures with me in them, but I like that picture. It's been forever since we got a picture Brian and I both look normal in.

Pssst...you should change your signature now.

Why am I not listening to the advice I've heard on here time and time again?

I cannot seem to take naps when she sleeps during the day. At night I sleep great when she sleeps but when the sun comes up I'm all awake.

I am SOO tired. ug. gr.

Isabel on the other hand is doing great. Happy as a clam to eat, sleep and mess her diaper.

We do things with her, talk with her, show her things, explain what we are doing.. what else should we be doing with/for her to make sure she stays developmentally on track?

Is there like a book on what to do with babies?

Brandy...all babies develop in their own time...some early, some "on time" and some late.....but eventually they all catch up. I wouldn't worry about anything in the first few years of life unless your mommy gut tells you something is wrong.

VENT......
WHY WHY WHY does my fifth child have to be different then all the others....WHY does he have to constantly spit up ALL OVER ME...not Paul, not the other four people in the house...ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have had a few heart to heart's with him, and obviously he doesn't see it my way yet!!!! All the others have seen it my way and have chosen to initiate Daddy, not Mommy....WHY must he be different!!!!!!!!! I don't have too many things that fit yet though, so I am doing my laundry just about every day because of it!!!!

Even if you can't actually sleep, lying somwhere comfy with your eyes closed and your body rested will help you and lift your energy levels.

How about "relax"?

All you have to do is be ordinary and normal. You don't have to be doing something with her every moment she's awake - and in fact, too much stimulation can upset them. Just talk when you feel like it, and don't when you don't. Envelop her into your life and share yourself - you actually don't have to make any special effort. No need for supermum, ordinary mum will do just fine.

I always had trouble sleeping during the day. You're not the only one. The only time I could ever nap was if I was extremely tired and it was Nathan's morning nap. He tended to nap within 2-3 hours of waking up. At least get off your feet and rest a bit; don't feel pressure to actually fall asleep, because then you won't for sure.

And I agree with Manda and Sarah. Just relax and love your baby. It's doubtful that you can do anything to "make" her smarter or better. She is who she is. As she grows you'll find ways to teach her, but it will just happen. Music and books are good for children at any age. Fresh air and sunshine is good, too. Don't freak out if she gets a little direct sunlight. Sunlight is good for her, and a little bit of exposure (not to much) will actually protect her from getting sunburns later on in life.

Brandy...chill.

Sarah, your vent made me laugh. Sorry. None of your other kids spit up on you? My last two did constantly. I expect no different from this one.

Brandy... just relax, girlfriend! There really isn't anything to do to encourage proper development right now but if you want a good book I really like "What to Expect the First Year".

yeah I figured you would laugh. My last two hardly ever spit up....they would drizzle a little out of their mouth, but never really spitting up. The one before that would spit up a little, but it never got me. Our first was like a fountain...spit up EVERY time...and a TON, but he always seemed to find Paul no matter where he was in the room. Paul thinks this is comical...he says it's about time!!! I guess I need to put those dozens on baby blankets we have to good use and keep one with me and ready all the time....I am out of the habit of that.
oh and did I tell you that the other day I went to take a pic of him and as soon as the camera snapped he was spitting up...so I got it coming out (I don't remember if I told you or not).....but I have never gotten a pic like that before)
