I have a silly question. When you go out to eat with a little baby, where do you put them? I thought we would leave him in his car seat, but where do we put it? I don't think it would fit in a booth and it wouldn't be safe on a chair.

It isn't a silly question. We chose places where we could put the car seat on the floor by our table. Or places with booths where the seats were deep enough to take the car seat.

It might be worth Chris visiting the places in advance, with an empty car seat, and trying it for size.

Some high chairs are made to hold the infant seat. Just check and make sure it's stable. Or, depending on where we are, the seat can go on the floor next to me. Or, it can be okay on a chair, if you push the chair and infant seat right up to the table. Bottom line is you just have to check for stability, and it's best if they're within arms reach, just in case.

Some booths will work too. The ones at Denny's are big enough, but Pizza Hut's are not. The ones here anyway...

How can you tell if it is or not? We are leaving in about 15 minutes to go to dinner.

Emily,

When DH and I go out to a pizza place or such we just put the car seat (baby in it) right on the table (when we are in a booth).

These are not swanky places, though, and the car seat is clean. We have had it on the booth seat before, too. I think we've had it on the floor once, but that is not our favorite place for baby to be.

(Swanky places we go to when we have a babysitter.)

Thanks!! This will be our first dinner out as a family. We aren't going anywhere fancy. We are going to a place called Ham's which is my favorite!! Depending on how David is doing after dinner we might go to Babies R Us too.

You can always give them a call before you leave, and ask them. And if the answer is no, you can ask them for a table where there would be enough room for the car seat to go on the floor next to the table without it being in anyone's way. You're not going to be the first parents with a baby to have eaten there, so they will likely be glad to make provision for you.

Emily - Most places we went to when Hunter was still in an infant carrier had a sling type contraption that was made for holding infant carriers. Also, most of the restaurant high chairs can be turned upside down and hold them as well. We have also put Hunter's carrier on the floor and in some booths that were wide enough.

Have fun at dinner and enjoy your first meal out as a family!

Have fun at dinner, Emily!

Nathan had his first real show of blood today, and it wasn't even that bad. Overall we've been pretty lucky considering how mobile he was so early. I was in the loo and dH was with him and all the sudden I hear a *wack* and a "Get in here". I stood right up and walked over, and Nathan had slipped and bashed his face against a piece of furniture. Greg's shirt had a decent amount of blood on it, but we could find no cuts inside his mouth, so it might've been his nose.

We let him stay up for an extra half hour and let him watch his favorite dog video. He seemed fine, and dH is putting him to bed. Poor fellow.

Just wanted to say that some restaurants don't allow babies on the floor near the table for safety reasons. I've been to a couple of places where the absolutely would not let us leave the seat on the floor. So we sat it on a chair or the table.

Hope you had a great dinner Em!

It's scary, Ruth. Gabby banged her mouth on the side of my parents nightstand while I was there in May. She pushed her gums up some and it bled a TON even though it was really a minor accident.

I remember when Jonathan and I were walking along the concrete path in front of our house - and his foot just slipped slightly off the edge and he fell, causing a cut just on his eyebrow

It didn't bleed much, but was a bit swollen, and I phoned my doctor to see if I needed to bring him in. He said no, but told me what to look out for (eg signs of concussion).......................Jonathan was fine. The cut left a little scar on his eyebrow which he has to this day (he's nearly 19 now), but he recovered really quickly. Not sure I did though.

Oh, I felt so bad today. Nathan went into the street, which he rarely does, but he was looking right at me when he did it, and he knew exactly what he was doing. So, I gave him a good swat, but I didn't have a good hold on him, so I ended up pushing him forward onto the concrete driveway. He barely grazed his skin, but oh, that wasn't mommy's best moment.

He walked. We were outside playing this morning.

I have to be so careful to spray him, too. The skeeters just love him.

Dinner was great. David slept the whole time. We ended up going to Cracker Barrel instead. They have a neat wooden board thing that straps to a chair so you can put the carrier on it. We went to BRU and Target too. He is still sleeping. It's going to be a LONG night because he will probably wake up soon and be awake for 4 hours or so.

(((Ruth)))

You would not believe the troubles we've had getting our babies used to sharing a room. Until the last week or two, Reagan loved to make noise and wake Lincoln up. She didn't care how much we swatted her. One night when I was nursing Lincoln to sleep (again) and she was banging on the walls and making noise. I asked her to come to me for a hand swat. Reaching over Lincoln, I missed her hand, hit her arm and made her fall over. I still wince when I think of that

I gave up having a bath/shower during the day after my ds was born. I started taking it in the evening, or even very late at night - and have kept to that ever since!

I did that too! Now Akeelah just comes in the shower with me, and I multitask!

As for restaurants - we would ask for a table out of the way and then bring the stroller with the car seat in and leave the stroller so that Akeelah could see everyone. Most restaurants were very good about it.

(((Prudent))) Dh and I have been discussing that situation, what we'll do. I don't know that Akeelah would be good about sharing a room. Hopefully though, baby #2 will decide to show up around the same time we move into a larger place! (LOL...ahhh, a girl can dream!)

Oh, my, Prudent. God sure broke the mold when he made Reagen, didn't he? Well, your post implied that the situation is getting better.

Now, if you (in the general sense) have a toddler who seems to not care about swats, and is still acting up no matter how consistent you are, when is a child old enough for a good butt-blistering spanking? Or can a toddler respond better to something else?

My niece was 2 and she bit her dad hard. He was so mad he left the room to count to 10. Then he came back in and put her over his knee for a good walloping. I know you're supposed to punish immediately with toddlers, but believe me, it was a good thing he counted to ten first.

ETA: Nathan has just started to throw himself to the floor in protest of his mean old parents enforcing boundaries. I don't laugh on the outside, but I'm chuckling on the inside.

I would say 2-ish for a good spank. I've spanked Wes good. I've had to wallop him, because he's can be so very defiant. I just walloped him good the other day when he ran into the street. On purpose, and after I told him no.
I would say that by the time they are 2, they have the ability to understand enough to respond to a serious punishment. Early bed, time out, good spank. I've done them all LOL...
That's JMHO of course...and we can always pm or take it to the spanking OST...
