I think the reason people don't mind the sugar in sweet tea even if they watch it elsewhere is because it truly is a cultural food (well...drink). Something that people from southern US identify with and want their kids to identify with. I had never even heard of sweet tea before I met Brian. People here do make iced tea, but it isn't the same. My dad makes sun tea and Brian says it tastes like tea gone bad.

Bug spray...at that age, I just try not to spray it on skin. I spray it on my kids clothes and on the top of their head and that works well enough. If I have a baby I feel is too little for it, I'll spray it on the stroller if they're going to be in it. If I have baby in a wrap, they are protected by MY bug spray.

Aw, Ruth. You are sweet.

I think Ethiopian woman just have stronger intestines than me. Josiah had never seen a woman with such severe morning sickness, and his mother had 7 children after him and his older brother. As a nurse he also saw lots of pregnant women. He didn't understand how I could be so sick and it really frustrated him, but he loved me so he took care of me.
People looking in from the outside didn't have that kind of love for me, so all they saw was a woman who wasn't doing much of anything useful. And in their defense, the only Westerners they had encountered were rather weird people--even I thought so. So I don't blame them too much.

I know! I ordered sweet tea in DC once and my MIL had to tell me that they don't have that there. The waitress said, I can bring you some tea and there is sugar and splenda on the table. I ordered a Dr. Pepper instead.

Interesting. My parents live 45 minutes ousth of DC and everyone there serves sweet tea.

Levi has a new phrase...me want. Yay. LOL...I think we taught to him by asking him if he wants things. Every time I have something he wants, he runs over and says, "Me want. Me want. Me want..." until he gets some. Now to work on PLEASE.

They did. I definately had a lot of stuff going on in my body that first time around. However, I also had much lower tolerance for the malaria and then the intestinal parasites than Ethiopians do. I think Josiah knew that rationally, but it was just hard to deal with because he'd never seen anyone so sick either from pregnancy or the bugs.
Anyway, the important part is, he put up with it.

I am desperately trying to find an umbrella stroller! Mine broke, and though I tried walking with Biruk on my back, I'm not doing that again. A mile and a half and my back and hips are still killing me a day later. I missed one at the thrift store by 2 minutes--someone else got to it just before me. Went looking at a yardsale today, but all they had was a Combi double which they wanted $100 bucks for (but I did get some other good stuff--the garage was literally full of barely used maternity and baby clothes up to 2T!).

Would one of those cheap $15-20 ones do, Maggie? Walmart and Target have some. At that age, I wouldn't want to fork over too much for a $50 one, since he'll be wanting to walk soon anyway, KWIM? But a cheap one might get you through the summer.

Maggie, are you in a craigslist area? Or maybe someone is giving one away on freecycle?

I took Jimmy back to the doctor today because I didn't think his ear infection was gone, even after the antibiotic shot. I saw a new doctor today, and she said there is fluid in both ears, but no infection. Well, if there's fluid in there and his ears are incapable of draining themselves then it will be an ear infection again. There was nothing the doc could do really. She just told me to give him ibuprofen if it bothers him. Well, this is almost the third bottle of ibuprofen since January. I hate just putting a bandaid on it. Ibuprofen won't fix his ears. There aren't any baby chiropractors in my area that take our insurance, and Walgreens doesn't know where to find Pulsatilla. I think I may call the kids' own doc today and ask him to refer me to a pediatric rhinolaringologist.

Question, which drug dries up mucous? It is an expectorant, right? Like children's cold medicine? The doctor I saw today hinted that it would dry up the fluid in his ears, but "they" don't recommend children under two having them but Walgreens will give me the proper dosage for a baby his weight. It was almost like she was telling me to buy some, but not directly.

I'm a little worried about Jimmy's hearing. He has not made any new consanant sounds since he was 6 months old. He knows D, R, G and B and that's it.

But if she's planning on lots of kiddos then it might be "cheaper" to buy a more expensive, well built one that will last through more than one child.
That's why Paul bought an expensive one for us - I couldn't do it myself but he thinks like a man, and really it makes sense, investing in quality with that type of an item.
Unless of course you find one at a thrift store for a couple bucks

I did grocery shopping today - I was so tired and didn't want to go out, but Judah is SO good when we go out - I really enjoy taking him out with me. I am glad to have that chore over with

That's obnoxious. They're so afraid of liability they don't want to tell you what to give him? You don't want an expectorant...that is to loosen up a cough. You want an antihistamine, to dry up the excess fluid. Benadryl would work or store brand cold/allergy medicine. I'd lean toward the cold/allergy meds for an ear thing. If you get some and PM me what the bottle says and how much he weighs, I'll tell you how much I would give my kids. There are also over the counter ear drops you can buy that will help reduce the pain. Similisan makes them, not sure if anyone else does.

ETA...true, Jess. But if she's just looking for something to work for a while, hopefully until she can find a good deal on a nice one, a cheap umbrella might work.

Ohhh, bendryl! Jimmy's had that before for the rash. I dunno what I did with it though. I remember we gave him 3/4 teaspoon. Walgreens does the math for me when it comes to that kind of thing. And they give me these nifty little bottle plugs and syringes to make it easier to administer medicine. Thanks Donna! I'm glad I didn't go out and buy an expectorant!

Sweet iced tea is also up north! Maybe it's a Mennonite thing. But I LOVE sweet iced tea. It's made this way: boil water, add tea bags, steep & remove, add lots of sugar, cool, dilute with water and serve.

I remember the first time I ordered iced tea down in the states and they brought unsweetened stuff - ewww, yuck!

I make it almost the same way. I don't boil the water, but use the hottest tap water we have (too hot for hands to be in). I also add cold, cold water immediately after stirring the sugar in...I don't cool it first.

That's how I make it. When I make it. I stopped making it a couple years ago when we stopped doing so much refined sugar. But it sure is GOOD!

Christina- If Jimmy has constant ear problems that would be why he isn't making any other sounds most probably. The first thing we do when a kid has speech problems is to get their ears checked, and those who have a speech probably most often have lots of ear infections or fluid in the ears or need gromits.

Nicole, that's what I was thinking too. It's hard to explain, but I can feel that there is something wrong. I feel like the fluid is keeping him from hearing properly hence the reason he hasn't said any new consanants since he was 6 months old. Like he can mimick syllables when we're face to face...I'll say, "ma ma ma" and he'll say, "ra ra ra". Or, I'll say "maaaaaaa" and he'll say "baaaaaaaa". It only seems like coincedence when he happens to say the same consanant as me.

The receptionist at the doc's office will have my doc call us back on Monday morning in regard to talking about a referral to the ENT specialist. I kinda want Jimmy to get tubes, but I don't. OI just wish there was an easier way to drain the fluid from his ears without a benedryl regimen (which I won't be doing). But, I will give it to him this time.

I really like my doc, but the way gas prices are going, I was looking to find a doc in my town so I don't have to drive up the hill anymore. The only one doesn't take my insurance. ARG!

I have a cousin who is 4 and just had 8 of his teeth surgically removed because they were rotten because his parents gave him juice in bottles and in bed for so long.

Your cousin had 8 of his teeth out because the sugar in the juice was pooling on his teeth while he was sleeping. Just the act of giving an awake child juice (or 100% like we give our girls) won't rot their teeth. Especially if you brush them and give the ones old enough for it child mouth wash...

Just curious - to those of you who give tea to your children, why do you add sugar to it?

(I'm not used to children being given tea anyway - it's not generally done in the UK - but, given that it seems to be a cultural thing there, I'm just wondering about the sugar thing. It seems strange to avoid or at least dilute fruit juice because of the sugar, but then serve sweetenend tea!)

I don't drink my iced tea with sugar. Though I do add a small amount of sugar to my hot tea (as well as cream) if I'm in the mood for it. We also give Hannah sips of our coffee. She loves everything we share with her...even the very occasional soda...

lol Donna, my husband doesn't consider $15 cheap. The stroller that broke was a handmedown that lasted through a previous child and then all three of mine. I'm going garage sale-ing today to see if I can hunt one down.

I agree, but just to add one thing--using juice bottles to comfort kids or keep them quiet can result in the same problem. If they are carrying juice around with them all day and have the bottle stuck in their mouths anytime they make a peep, that'll cause the baby-bottle-mouth as well. Not that moms here would do that, but it does happen.

Right...I agree completely! I just didn't like the impression that seemed to be pervading this thread, that giving juice (undilluted 100% kind) was tantamount to child abuse. Both our girls love juice but they don't have 'bottles' stuck to their mouths all day long. They also drink milk and water. If a person is worried about the sugar amounts in 100% juice then that person shouldn't give his/her children fruit either...since fruit has natural sugars. Sugar in itself isn't bad. It's the over indulgence in sugar that is bad...

Fruit contains other nutrients and is building good eating habits, IMO. The juice that WIC gives us for Gabby is 100% juice but it contains almost no vitamins except for the Vitamin C that was added.

Btw, we decided she won't be having any juice unless she's constipated.

Blueberry and other (pricier) juices don't have vitamins added. They've got anti-oxidants built right in.

Eating fruit (and veggies) is a good eating habit! But the impression I got on here was that sugar is from the devil. And if that's so then fruit (which contains sugar) shouldn't be eaten...

I got my stroller! $4 at the first sale I stopped at. Took it out for a spin right away, and it's perfect.

Biruk is doing a whole lot of imitating these days. My absolute favorite is that when I can get him to hold still long enough to cuddle, he will press his little face up against mine and go "Awwwww" and "Hmmmmm" which is what I have done to calm him down when he's screaming.

Excellent Maggie! Well done, lady.

And I love the imitations, too. Nathan has learned to wipe his hands together when he's got dirt or something on them. It's to funny the way he does it.
