Stephanie, my older boys both self weaned at about 18 months, when I was around 3 months pregnant. But I know other babies don't wean, so I guess it depends on how attached they are to nursing.

I hope you don't mind, but your description made me chuckle a little. Shaking his finger at the breast.

Congrats Jennifer! BTW a looong time ago you (in another thread) mentioned how you handled labor. I kept that in mind and it helped tremendously with my labor with Mary. THANK YOU!!!!

Back to topic -- Mary and I are still plugging away at being comfortable with nursing. Right now she likes the football hold for the left breast. We still have issues of momentary unlatching (makes like a clicking sound) while sucking and this in turn will make her choke. Usually I will get her to get a better latch. Unfortunately we still have a hard time burping thus she ends up being really gassy. So we take it all in stride!

Ok I've got a question for you all. I just had enough HCG hormone this morning to test positive on a prego test. Well my 16 month old started feeding really odd last night and it was worse today. When ever my milk lets down he pops off and starts yelling at my breast and shaking his finger at it. Then proceeds to latch back on only to do the same thing seconds later. He then demands to be switched to the other and the same thing happens. My health department said that this was because the milk tastes funny to him because of the HCG. My question is - is this going to cause him to self wean or will he just become accostomed to the new taste? And if he becomes acquired to the taste will breastfeeding during pregnancy make my breast hurt more than a normal pregnancy does? My breasts hurt alot with my son's pregnancy.

Thank you and looking forward to all your comments

Stephanie

it depends on the baby....so far all of mine have stopped nursing when I got pregnant again, but some more easily and for different reasons then the others. I think it really depends on the abby and their personality and attachment to nursing though. ok...here is my experience with ours so far.....
1st...I nursed for 9 months...when he was 7 months I got pregnant. I had had toxemia with my first pregnancy and my body was not prepared enough and had not fully out-processed all those toxins, and when I got pregnant again that's what it did. So it was pushing toxins out my breast milk and I had to stop nursing him...he was getting sick because of it. He didn't want to stop, but he did. This kind of occurrence though is very VERY odd, even with having previously had toxemia.
2nd...I nursed her for 16 months...she stopped then on her own because of all the changes in life at that time (I was not pregnant).
3rd...I nursed her for 15-16 months. I got pregnant with the next one when she was 10 months old or so...didn't actually test until months later (hubby was deployed and we lived overseas and I personally couldn't have handled knowing, so for a few months I lived in denial...lol). Once life settled down (I went to be with my mom since hubby was gone) she stopped nursing...for her though it seemed more like that she was annoyed that my growing belly was infringing on her lap space and she didn't like that.
4th...I thought he would never stop nursing...I got pregnant again when he was 14 months old, and he continued to nurse until he was 20 months old. The month he stopped it had more to do with his getting sick though, not really anything to do with my pregnancy. He got a head cold that wouldn't go away, and he couldn't breathe while nursing, so he went from nursing about ten times a day still to nothing for about a week and a half. Then he got over that cold and started nursing again...about five times a day then. He then got another cold that clogged him up, again for about a week and a half, and after that he stopped nursing fully. He tried a few times after that cold dried up, but only a couple of times in two weeks time....and by then he had figured out the cup and was happy with just that and my lap. I have a feeling if he had not gotten sick though he would still be nursing...just his personality.

Nursing pg mamas- do/did your nipples get extra sensitive? Today I actually yelled at Anna (just Ow..Ow..OOWWWWW)- it really hurt, and I'm not sure if she is just getting lazy latch since she has been nursing so long or if it is pg related- tips, ideas, encouragement? (and no, I'm not trying to wean now, though part of me is screaming to be done- she is a high needs child and she LOVES her nursing. In a few months, I'll consider it, but for now, I'm toughing it out with her)

Congrats, Jennifer!! I was thinking "I didn't know she was pregnant" and was feeling bad about it until I saw Donna's post and then yours. How exciting!

I'm still amazed at the woman nursing 8 babies! WOW!

Got the SNS in the mail today. It's been sterilized and ready! I'm dying to try it but may wait for later tonight when hubby is home to help. We'll see.

I know I'm always taking and asking in this thread and don't contribute much knowledge (basically because I don't have any to share just yet)...but can I ask for prayers one last time? Thanks.

Tammy- You are amazing! Your persistence and desire to do what is best for your little girl is truly inspiring. I truly believe that God will bless your commitment and efforts. I do not know anyone who has tried as hard as you- no matter what happens, you can honestly say you tried *everything* for your little one- and next time around, you probably won't know what to do with one that learns in the first few weeks- you'll think you must be missing something that it is this easy! My first nursling was very, very rough, and my second took to it like a fish to water and doesn't want to give it up for anything- and don't feel bad about not giving advice- with all you are learning, your day will come!

yes..esp in the first trimester...well, esp in the first half of the first trimester. By the second trimester it was fine, but that's when all of mine stopped nursing...during that trimester, so I can't say for the third. But the first half of the first was the worst.

Tammy...re-read what jennifer put...she is wise!!!

When I was pregnant Reagan often said my milk was yucky. But I was never 100% certain if she was joking, just using her favorite word, or telling me my milk tasted bad. If it did taste bad, it in no way stopped her from nursing.

I found nursing the 2nd time to be almost no transition at all because my nipples & breasts were still in use. I had almost zero nipple tenderness at all, no engorgement pain, and never any indications of a potential blocked duct (firmness, warmth). I never experienced any nipple tenderness during my 2nd pregnancy, which is a good thing since I was still nursing Reagan.

Reagan still asks to nurse at least 3 times per day. I only let her nurse about 2-3 times per week. I think she would have naturally weaned by now if she didn't see Lincoln nursing all the time. She never shows any jealousy about him nursing, but it does keep the idea of nursing fresh in her mind. I'm absolutely stopping when she turns 2, and I know she'll get over it eventually.

I know your questions have pretty much been answered...but it depends on the child. I have had two children who nursed while I was pregnant...and neither one of them seemed affected by the taste. The first baby to do that (she was baby #3) never seem to notice...she did wean herself 2 weeks before her baby brother was born...but I think that was more because she was ready because she was 3 and 3/4 and she just said "I'm big now...I don't need nummy anymore"...course she may have come to that conclusion because I was big..and she had a harder time getting to it! With that pregnancy...my nipple were never more sensitive..not sure why.

With the next pregnancy/nursing...my nipples did get very sensitive for the first couple of months (first trimester like everyone else said)...again...that baby didn't seem to notice a change or at least didn't react to it...but then again...he was so into nursing that he nursed for two years AFTER his little sister was born!

I also found that nursing through the pregnancy made me have LESS breast/nipple discomfort for the most part than with my other babies.

Hi ladies. Just checking in after a few days' absense. BFing is going well. I had a really rough day Thursday when DS wanted to nurse every hour starting at 6 AM and finally ceasing a bit at 2PM when I got him to take a nap. I still have some pain from the nipple blanching but not as much and mostly at night which is frustrating because the pain can keep me from sleeping. Luckily DS doesn't wake that often at night. Yesterday and today have been better. I also upped my fenugreek and feel like I have a little more supply so offer. I'm thinking about adding either alfalfa, spirulina, barley or shatavari to my "pharmacy" as I've heard that any one of those can give an even bigger boost when added to fenugreek. Anyway, that's all boring I know but it's good to share my thoughts sometimes.

Now for a bit of entertainment. Go here for a pic of my DD's latest reading choice. :)

To increase your supply you can also add pineapple juice to your diet. Hopps also increase milk production so you could drink non-alcoholic beer too if you wanted to also go that route.

I love your daughter's choice for reading...she will be one prepared mama when the time comes...in about 20 years or so...LOL....

You can sometimes find hops in specialty stores and add them to salads as well....they taste kind of spicy/peppery and add a nice touch to salads or even sandwiches...just be sure to use a small amount as a little goes a long way.

Another "easy" way to up supply is to use Traditional Medicinals Mother's Milk tea...it has several herbs in it that help up the supply and it is good iced or hot...I used to brew a quart of it a day..and then drink it while I was nursing....that way I kept hydrated and it helped with supply issues when it was hot.

When your nipple is blanched after nursing...squeeze a little milk out of it and rub it into the nipple and surrounding area and then let it air dry...it helps stimulate the blood flow and the milk helps to moisturize and protect the area as well. My second child used to do that to me...it was simply because he was super nurser...he could empty both breasts and have a bulging belly in 15 minutes flat.

I used this as well, this time around with Jael. It was a bit pricey at our local small health food store. Next time around I might try looking online to find it cheaper. It does work though and tastes pretty good, even without added sugar or honey.

I tried Mother's Milk Tea with #2, I quickly got sick of it because you have to drink so much per day (5 cups) not to mention that it made me feel "yucky" for lack of a better description.

My nipple blanching is due to "trauma" which is a bit different than nipple blanching caused by poor latch or a really strong eater (my DS fits that category as well) but I may try the milk suggestion. The problem with that is that being exposed to air make them more painful. Keeping them warm and covered is important. But, still worth a try.

I'm taking 4 capsules of fenugreek 3 times a day for a couple of days now and yesterday was actually full enough to feel quite sore. Yoohoo! DS is four weeks old today and I have not had to give any formula, my supply has been sufficient. (Just a note, I have nothing against formula, it's just a good feeling to know that I have enough.)

Friday night I went out for a girls night out. Cindy Klassen won several medals at the last Winter Olympics in speed skating for Canada. Her sister Lisa was involved in a near fatal car accident in early February and there was a miraculous rescue effort (her vehicle flipped over a bridge and landed on the most frozen vehicle) and recovery. Lisa spoke at our church's Girlfriend's night - we had a coffee house idea going on that evening as well (Starbucks coffee and fancy coffees from DeLucas, and delicious desserts!). Anyway, I missed a feeding that evening. Saturday was normal, and because Jacob woke up during the night inbetween (he sometimes does and sometimes doesn't these days) things felt fairly normal milk-production wise. Depending on his night sleeping he eats either 5 or 6 times a day.

But then Saturday night he slept so long I was already really full in the morning. He slept so long he went down to 4 feedings. And then we decided to go see Indiana Jones Sunday night so I missed one of those 4 feedings. So I only fed him 3 times on Sunday. I would've pumped while we were gone but we drove with my SIL and her husband, so not so much. Jacob slept through the night again Sunday night which means I was really in pain by the morning. AFTER he ate, i pumped an additional almost 8oz!! That was too much for one weekend that's for sure. Mental note - don't do that again!

Julie, I'm so excited about your supply! That's wonderful! Glad the blanching is getting a bit better too.

WOF and Kim, you've given me some ideas. I'm going to get the tea and some pineapple juice. Thanks for the suggestions!

Hubby and I have decided to go back to the breastfeeding doctor this week. I can't remember if I told you ladies this but I cancelled my appointment last week. Josie was running a low grade fever with her teething and we just weren't sure whether we wanted to give it another try. So I'll call in a little while to get an appointment. I'm hoping she can give me some additional help on increasing my supply and ideas on getting Josie to nurse.

The other day she was laying on her changing table and I was really full so I just offered her my breast there. She was really lapping it up but still wouldn't latch (I was feeding her drops by hand expressing). I'm beginning to wonder if there's a breathing problem or even a softening of the palate. I've read that babies can have a softening of the palate and it be undiagnosed. However, she seems fine with the bottle so it is likely just nipple preference but something to think about. I've noticed her nose being stuffy since surgery...something to talk with the surgeon about in July.

I don't know what she does, but Mary has a new thing that with about every other suck she looses her latch (nipple will still be in her mouth but she looses her suction). I don't know if she isn't getting a big enough "bite" or if her "sucker" is just getting lazy.

Nath does that a bit too Nicole, I think its coz he is so excited and hungry he just goes for it and it falls away. Doesn't help him with his reflux, gulping all that air in. Mary doesn't have reflux does she?
