I am so upset!! I took David to the doctor today and the pediatrician prescribed nystatin. I went to the pharmacist and picked it up. I was in a hurry to get home to my baby, my sister had given me a ride, and our FSA card wasn't working, so I was frustrated and in a hurry. The pharmacy tech was grumpy and hard to understand. I got home and was reading the directions and it says to give 2 droppers full 4 times a day. The dropper she gave me was a 1 teaspoon dropper. I thought that seemed like a lot so I called the doctor back to check. When he called it in he had told them 2 1 milliliter droppers full 4 times a day. The nurse said she was really glad I called because I would have been giving him way too much.

ORIGINAL: Royal.Fortress I was gonna say that too - newborns often eat every 2 - 3 hours, that's completely normal!! Gwen seems to be an every 3 hours sort of girl, although there have been a few 2 hour stretches and we had one 4 hour stretch today. newborns eat as often as EVERY HOUR ON THE HOUR...seriously...and it is normal. The 2 to 3 hour thing is actually a pretty far extension for most...and why they say to never let them go more than 4 hours without eating.

People kept telling me that I must not be making enough milk when I had my first and he did that. Seriously, sometimes it wasn't even 45 minutes before he was wanting to eat again. All of mine have done that to some extent in the first few weeks. I'm really glad I didn't feel like I needed to set a 2-3 hour limit, because I would have been totally stressed out trying to soothe frantic, hungry, screaming babies. I didn't have any that ate every hour on the hour until my third....but she ate every hour on the hour and could only nurse on one side at a time...her little tummy would be tight like a drum (and not from gas bubbles)...and then one hour later she'd be hungry. Her little tummy just could not hold more than one hour's worth of food at time. My first born ate every 2 hours...but then she nursed for like an HOUR when she did nurse...she was slow and pokey! My second born ate every hour and half to 2 hours...and he could empty both sides in 15 minutes flat! SUPER nurser extreme! my fourth...he was a grazer...he never did settle into a pattern...sometimes it was 45 minutes..sometimes 2 hours...just whatever his little tummy decided my fifth...was every hour on the hour.

I put some gentian violet on my nipples to help with the thrush. A little while later I pumped. The milk has a light purple tint to it. Is it safe to feed to David?

David slept from 12:00-5:30 last night, work up and ate 2 oz, then slept from 6:00-8:30. He eats 2 oz every 2-3 hours during the day.

We had to give Jael some estrogen cream for her little noonie and the syringe that comes with it and the instructions say to put it in the vagina and put an entire syringe full in...I *knew* that wasn't good for a newborn! All I had to do was put a small amount on my finger or cotton swab and apply it directly to the area she needed it on...can you imagine if I'd done what was prescribed for premenaupausal women?!

Hunter had thrush and was prescribed Nystatin as well, but we didn't give him it orally like medicine. We were instructed to rub it on the infected areas and to rub it on my nipples as well. It did not end up working for him and we ended up having to give him liquid diflucan (that was given orally) and it cleared it up much easier and quicker. Not that I recommend doing that right off the bat, it was last resort for us.

I am pumping right now. I think he won't latch on because the thrush is bothering him. I try to get him to nurse first as soon as he acts hungry but I give him a bottle when he gets upset. I am also in pain because of the thrush. Nursing and pumping both hurt, but pumping hurts less.

I agree, Emily - you're doing great! I have another question. Sometimes Caden will get very upset if my letdown doesn't happen fast enough. Then he gets too worked up to even eat and just ends up having a fit. It takes a good while to calm him enough to try again. Does anyone have suggestions for helping the letdown happen faster or anything that can help him not to get so frustrated while waiting? I try to catch him before he's starving, but that doesn't always happen. He's an impatient little thing!

Is it possible to have thrush on one nipple but not the other? Also, is it normal for one breast to consistently make more milk than the other?

The vague answer: As much as he wants, every baby is different...as long as h has wet and popy diapers, is hitting his milestones, seems playful....blah blah blah... The book answer: 6ish times a day Jimmy is 13 months, and he nuses at least 6 times a day, 4 times at night. A few other women on here have had babies who nurse more often than that at an older age....No such thing as too much breastmilk. But, there is such a thing as too little, IMO. If you think maybe little Nath is not nursing enough, you can try incorporating more feedings in the day like at cranky times or even in the middle of happy times, or right before meals. I never felt like I needed to wait for them to ask (fuss) for it.

ug. I have a baby who doesn't like my right breast. I think it's an angel thing and the AWESOME consultant at hosp said not to worry for the next few days and let her get the left side mastered and we can work on the right over time BUT Oh my word I'm just starting to get engorged and I can feel the hardness coming on.. I'm assuming thats the lumpyness I'm feeling that is slowly creeping into my whole breast? and wow are they heavy. Shower was almost too painful. The positive is that while I nurse on the left side, the R leaks COPIOUS amounts so I do get some relief. Gotta work on the shower thing to help get some relief from the pressure. She nurses like a champ, it does take her 30-40 minutes to get a good feed in but then she's soooo satiated and sedate it's adorable. Oh, just FYI.. When a baby sneezes while attached to you.. IMMEDIATELY get a burp cloth ready, she realized she sneezed about 2 seconds later and it scared her and then she spit up some. I had a hard time not giggling at her.

Can you pump your right breast or hand express at least so you don't get clogged ducts? And congratulations Brandy! Nicole, at 9 months my youngest was still nursing every 2 or 3 hours, probably more like every 2, and at once at night. So yeah, I nursed her whenever she wanted. Remember at that age breastmilk or formula is still their primary source of nutrition. So I'd expect baby to still be nursing at regular intervals and would offer nursing I thought it had been too long. Dee
