What are the odds that I will need something more than what I had this last time? What I mean is, has anyone ever leaked more with other children? I leak awful, and the amount is the same at the beginning (except last time, but I think that was from Hannah nursing too). The duration of the leaking has been shorter for each one. I think 6 months for Hannah (and longer here and there), and 4 months with Levi.

Haven't used them in months though, and don't use them often enough to keep...pm me if your interested. Hey..wasn't I supposed to mail you something else too? I have this nagging feeling that I was supposed to mail you something months ago and forgot... SAndy I don't remember...... But I don't remember a lot of things these days. Don't worry about it.

I nursed Hunter for 13 months and never once had to nurse in "public". I got out of the house quite often too. He nursed every 3 hours in the beginning so I would nurse him right before I walked out the door and I knew how much time I would have to run errands. If we were going to be out for an all day event I would just nurse him in the car before going into a store or after we came out of the store, before putting him back in his car seat. Some other solutions that worked for us (and I have done these with Hunter) while out was our mall had a nursing nook that was very private and dressing rooms work great for privacy. I also had the convenience of being able to stop by hubby's office, shutting the door, and nursing in there as well. As far as church goes I would either nurse in our women's bathroom because it had comfy couch or I found an empty Sunday School classroom and nursed with my back to the door so if someone happened to walk in they wouldn't see a thing. I never got the hang of the blanket either and past a certain point he wouldn't nurse with one over him so I know how that can be. I hope it helps! Please, do not let anyone under any circumstance pressure you into supplementing if that is not something you are comfortable with. There really is no need for it and it should be your decision alone. Go with your mommy gut!

Jae- There are lots of things you can do. you can get a couple nursing tops (I prefer the empire style b/c they seem to be the least bulky/easiest to use. You do not *need* a blanket over you the whole time. What I do is get a blanket/diaper/whatever and bunch it up at babies shoulder and hold it there while we latch (ie if nursing on the right side, my right hand that is under baby anyway helps it stay put- I bunch it so that it has enough body to provide cover, but none of mine would put up with blankets either). After latch, I make sure that my shirt is as adjusted as possible, then just use the diaper (I like to use a cloth one) as a "just in case" something needs covered. When I nurse this way you can see a little breast IF- you exactly next to me on the couch, or if you look directly down from above me- if I use a recliner or chair in a corner/against a wall, that is pretty avoidable. To me, using a blanket screams to the world- "Look what I'm doing!!!!" (now there are those who are just too well endowed to not use one, and I don't mean to criticize AT ALL- just saying I don't like it for *me*) Doing it like that has only resulted in one embarassing moment- I was feeding Eleni at a bar at Bob Evans (dh said, you are doing that here?!- I said she is HUNGRY! and sat down and got her settled) a hostess came over going "Oh, how cute, she is sooo (as she comes closer and closer and closer- literally one inch from baby's face/my boob) OH! Um, Oh!" Let's just say that I was not the one who was red faced- if somebody is going to put their face one inch from my boob, they get what they get. Another thing you can do is practice latching in front of a mirror so that you can see what you are doing. You CAN nurse in public. You have NOTHING to be ashamed of/worried about. You are feeding a baby in the most natural normal way. I'm sure that if you practice a little, you will build confidence and find out just how portable nursing is.

Also, practice nursing in the K'tan. Even if it's to big right now for standing up, it will still cover wonderfully while nursing. I nursed while boarding an airplane, in a museum, at the airport, while wandering Walmart, etc... and people would ask to see the baby so I know they didn't realize I was nursing until I said she was eating.

Someone mentioned nursing tops in another thread. I was wondering if they are necessary? If so, how many do you need and where can you get them without spending a lot? What kind of clothes do you need to make nursing easier?

I thought the nursing tops were necessary but that could be because I didn't like having to roll up a long t-shirt that far. If you have an Other Mother's (or other second-hand maternity store) around you can find some fairly cheap. There are a few different styles too, flap that opens from the bottom, slits in the side, flap that unhooks from the top...

ohoh Ryanne made me think.. did you get a sling that was more basket like and not the K'tan?? It was too big at first right? Do you still have it and how does it fit now? He may be big enough to use that to nurse in while he grows into the K'tan. The to bigness is not the size of the baby, but the physical size of the sling.

If your sitting, the K'tan will work as a great nursing cover. Isn't someone going to help you fix it?

ORIGINAL: Flintejae I need your help. I need tips/advice/encouragement to breastfeed in public. I dread it and it's caused me to be a serious hermit. Jadon seems to hate having a blanket over him and I hate using it. I haven't been to church in over a month because of it. Does your church not have a restroom where you could feed? Or a quiet room somewhere? quote:
Jason's mom is bugging me to supplement on those occasions, but I don't want to do that. What I did was give 1-2oz of cooled boiled water at times when mine wouldn't quite last the time when we were out. It took the edge off their thirst without detracting from their desire for milk (as it passes through the system quite quickly).

Smallgroup is in someones home right? Can you just ask to borrow a bed room? Like when you get there, ask the host, "Jadon may get hungry, is there a spare room I can know of now that I can go to in order to feed him later?" and bam, there ya go. Church - nursery? empty sunday school room? crying room? My mom used to latch my sister on in the nursery and then walk around the building during good weather, outside. She loved it, sun shine, warm air, peaceful walking and when she came back in all was well. Baby fed and happy and moms sunshine tank was filled up.

gee whiz, good to know. I just googled "water to infants under 6 months" and got like 2 dozen sites with water intoxication articles. Makes sense with how tiny their systems are. scary.

I'm curious as to where you found this info ... because even the docs and midwives say that water is fine, unless your area is under some type of major water restrictions (like a chemical leak into the water supply type of thing)

I see we crossposted ... But even those articles you referenced made a comment about "no more than 3 ounces of water at a time" for the under 9 month category. And the one article said not to dilute formula, yet that is standard practice (recommended by a large # of ER dictors) for a formula fed infant who has endured a bout with a stomach bug ... dilute to half strength for 1-2 days, 3/4 strength for another 1-2 days, and then resume full strength.

I guess it depends on your Pediatrician, ours said NO water, they prefer even a jar of prunes to water or juice for constipation. And like I said, it's ok if medically authorized, but I would not do it as a "filler".
