csl7037 -> Lego Club (4/30/2008 10:38:33 AM)

My kids are in a private Christian school but I thought this could be a question for any parent who might know so it's here. My friend and I would like to start some kid of Lego club for our boys (2nd & 4th grade next year) but aren't sure where to start. My nephews were in something called FIRST but that's a robotics thing. Our guys just want to build stuff at this point, I think. I'm looking into the Junior FIRST Lego League, though. Anyone know of anything like that being done either JFLL or independently?

My son has been in FIRST for the last 2 years through his school. I think FIRST is for kids ages 9-14?? I think the same org. has a robotics club for younger kids, too. His team went to State each of the last two, and this past year there were twice as many teams competing in our state as the year before. I *think* that anyone can start a FIRST team, but keep in mind that you'd need to buy the robot and the game-mat for that year. That expense is covered by annual dues and you can also get local businesses to sponsor the team (Caterpillar was one of our team's sponsors). The kids really do have a lot of fun, and the emphasis is on teamwork and fun rather than on winning (although, it is fun to win!).

As far as a "regular" club for Lego Brick building, I'm not sure about that, but there is no reason you can't start one!
