I'm obese. I'm working on it. I have lost over 16 lbs this year through eating better and exercising more. I'm more fit than I was when I started - that's for sure. I don't huff and puff as much when climbing flights of stairs; I'm developing muscle under this fat. My digestive system is healthier with the fiber, vitamins, and other good things I'm eating. I'm more fit than I was before... but am I as fit as I could be? Of course not. Am I as fit (healthy) as I will be when I've lost my final 50 lbs? Of course not. I'm lugging around extra weight that makes my heart work harder, my joints stress more, etc.

It's just common sense.

ETA: Oh, and I'm not depriving myself, either. Just thought I'd make that clear.

Your candor is refreshing.

You see what needs to happen and have a goal which you're working toward. I've been there myself (as mentioned in a previous post).

I've also heard that if your fat cells get TOO big, they WILL reproduce... and you can't get rid of the new ones, either.

I wish I had a link to that info.

Scary!

It actually makes sense to me that a fat cell can get so fat that it has to split. I think the biggest single cell is an egg yolk or something like that, but fat cells aren't like that. But I wonder if there's a fat cell somewhere that's as big as a yolk.

Cool!

I do wonder how people know if fat cells really reproduce or not. I'm not saying it's not possible, but I'm wondering what the basis is for thinking this...or how researchers know for certain.

I've never seen an obese octogenarian.

Several years ago, I met an obese 102 year-old retired Baptist preacher who was mentally sharp and looked younger than his 84 year-old wife.

HERE is an article about fat cells reproducing. It mostly talks about fat cells regenerating to replace dying/dead fat cells, but the las paragraph mentions growth of more fat cells.

I've met plenty of quite elderly (80's plus) obese people. Key thing they've (in my purely non-scientific sample) all had in common was consistent physical activity - usually starting with walking to do a lot of their "getting around".

1. Thanks for the article Tricia.
2. RE: Post 107, being obese and old is not impossible, but quality of life sure seems diminished for many of them--if not all.

I believe it belongs to the ostrich genus.

Perhaps that would make a good thread...men who can see past outer issues.

Only once you realize women are just as shallow.

When I was "overweight", not one woman dared to 'look past' anything.
