I remember when the Rock Opera, Tommy was first released.

We thought it was so cool...seriously

we did

I liked older Who recordings, but everyone went ape over Tommy

Got the album in the basement. That was one of the first albums that I listened to repeatedly with a set of headphones. I also loved to listen to BTO with my headphones. Let It Ride was my favorite BTO tune -- still is.

I think those headphones are one reason I'm half deaf today. I feel a rant coming on about the IPod, so I'll stop.

headphones!

My dad got this stereo system that had a heavy duty set of headphones.

Really heavy - they weighed like 3 lbs. and the earpieces looked like those big things that the guys on runways wear to protect their ears from the plane noise.

I thought it was awesome! I would sit and listen to my music for hours on end and tune out the rest of the world. Tuning out was way better than tuning in.

How about Radar Love? Stairway to Heaven? (That might have been mentioned though) I loved Radar Love!

Carole King "So far away, doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore?"

Stairway to Heaven...we thought that was THE absolute, most coolest song ever!

The night clubs here all had live bands (pre-disco) and one of the bands was really good (Mr. Moon), they would sing Stairway to Heaven and you always had to find your best fella to dance with for that one.

That used to be the thing at the local fair every year - Battle of the Bands - we would do anything to get there every night for that.

I was taking piano lessons from a gal who had me playing all of Carole King's music - it was way cool.

Got that album in the basement too.

Another favorite was the Machine Head album.

I bought a Carole King collection not too long ago. Mainly I just wanted Tapestry and at the time I couldn't get it.

I borrowed my brother's Golden Earring album when it first came out and I didn't want to give it back. My toe's tapping now just thinking about the song.

I Feel the Earth Move is still one of my favorite things to play in the piano. Great song!

How about a little Yes on the headphones? Or Pink Floyd? That was probably my all time favorite. Man, no wonder I was depressed in my 20s. Pink Floyd is DEPRESSING.

You know you're a 70s kid when you remember being hacked that a movie ticket went from 50 cents to 75 cents. Everyone was torqued about that.

I assume someone already mentioned standing in line for gas. We all remember that I'm sure.

Yes to YES!
Still like Pink Floyd though.

Also liked listening to Cream and David Bowie.

Then of course, I had my whole Beatles phase where I listened and discussed their lyrics with anyone who would listen

I liked Moody Blues Nights in White Satin but technically that is not a 70s song. They sure played it a lot though.

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida!!! also not technically 70s but played a lot.

My dad would go park our car at the gas station the night before and ride his bike home.

Course, everyone did that on the air base.

I still love Pink Floyd too. I've been to see them in concert a couple of times since I was grown. Roger Waters on his own too. His show by himself was actually better than Pink Floyd's, but that's another thread.

Songs that make me think of the 70s, but that I actually can't stand are "Rock the Boat," "Muskrat Love," "Sometimes When We Touch," (not sure if that last one is the title, but you guys know what song I'm thinking of.

Here's some good stuff that really makes me think 70s:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=4gpNqB4dnT4&feature=related

Great music, but check out the lead guitar player's outfit.

The song that really reminds me of the 70s is Mama Told Me to Come by Three Dog Night. I can't think of a song more representative of the 70s I witnessed.

BTW, there's a great live version on youtube.

The Midnight Special! I watched this show every week!

In fact, I went into labor watching Peter Frampton on the Midnight Special.

the friends I had listened to Lynard Skynard, Pure Prairie League and various other southern rockers

Now I'm all into youtube searching for 70's music

I forgot about Badfinger!

and CHICAGO! I was not a real big fan, but they were most certainly popular

also the first time KISS went around

They just don't have Midnight Specials anymore...everything is so sanitized, who cares to see if the person can really sing without their fancy microphones and electronica. It's kinda sad really.

Real music for real people - that was the 70's and 60's, too

I also forget that the Jackson Five and the Osmond Brothers started in the 70's.

it's weird to see just how weird Michael truly got to be

OK...last mention of music for a while....

but it was so exciting to hear old Sex Pistols, The Clash, Queen, Rod Stewart, Bay City Rollers and Deep Purple...

ok...I really will stop now

Excuse me, you are going to talk about 70's music and not mention "Frampton Comes Alive" the still largest selling live album of all time? (yes they were albums and I still call them such)

Not from what I've read.
quote:

The album became the biggest selling live album at the time of its release and sold over 6 million copies in the US, 16 million worldwide. It has since dropped to fourth all-time, after The Garth Brooks album Double Live, which at 20 times platinum is the best selling live album of all time at present. Bruce Springsteen is next at 13 times with Bruce Springsteen & E Street Band Live 1975 - '85 and The Eagles come in next with Eagles Live at 7 times platinum. Frampton Comes Alive! is 6 times platinum

Frampton never appealed to me. I never understood why that album sold so much.

I can't believe it was 6 pages before someone mentioned School House Rock!

You are definitely a child of the 70's if you learned more from School House Rock than school.

And .... if you hanker for a hunka' cheese...

Oooh Oooh and does anyone remember the packets of information you could send for from some governement info agency in Boulder or Denver? I can almost hear the address... and I *did* send for one!

Congress lowered the voting age to 18 which was ratified in 1971 I believe. I was so excited to be able to register to vote.
