I was reading in Judges and Chronicles, and one thing jumped out at me. When the king of the land was a man after God's heart, peace and rest were given to the land. An example is King Asa:

2 Chronicles 14

Asa King of Judah

2 Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God. 3 He removed the foreign altars and the high places, smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles. [a] 4 He commanded Judah to seek the LORD, the God of their fathers, and to obey his laws and commands. 5 He removed the high places and incense altars in every town in Judah, and the kingdom was at peace under him. 6 He built up the fortified cities of Judah, since the land was at peace. No one was at war with him during those years, for the LORD gave him rest.

One other example comes to mind. In the book of Jonah, when word of destruction came from Jonah, the king of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and a city wide prayer meeting to seek God for healing(Jonah Chapter 3). God heard their cries, and changed his mind about their destruction.

There is a great spiritual truth here...as the leader goes, so goes the nation, city, business, etc.

As Christians, we are taught to pray for our leaders, for our nation, and for one another. We need an old fashioned prayer meeting like the king of Ninevah proclaimed. Can you just imagine if President Bush was to proclaim a time of prayer, kneel himself before the Lord on national television, and call upon the name of Jesus for all to see, and ask the Lord to stretch His healing hand across our land...what a revival we would have!

Daniel 2 verse 21 "And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:"

I believe that he sincerely prays for guidance and I understand how most Americans and the world will remember him but overall, I feel that God has guided our president even though I abhor the fact that we went to Iraq. He may indeed shoulder some of the blame for why America is in trouble but one man alone has not brought us here.

I would love to see an Asa in the White House but we all know better. A president playing doctor with little boys would fare better than a leader trying to clean house and welcome God back to where He should be.

So, what are some things going on in this nation that has gotten your attention?

Take your pick-but I think II Corinthians 12:20-21 applies a little too well INSIDE and OUTSIDE of the church:

20 For I am afraid that when I come I may not find you as I want you to be, and you may not find me as you want me to be. I fear that there may be quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, factions, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder.

21 I am afraid that when I come again my God will humble me before you, and I will be grieved over many who have sinned earlier and have not repented of the impurity, sexual sin and debauchery in which they have indulged.

Do you believe that there are darker days ahead or nothing to worry about?

We are promised that darker days are ahead until the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ (for today's world, the warnings of Matthew 24 are very key).

In your opinion, what do you believe is our Nation's biggest problem and what do you believe is the remedy?

Matthew 24:9-13 tells us a little about this:

9"Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.

10At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other,

11and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people.

12Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold,

13but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.

14And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

The solution is simple as a discussion but not as simple in practice:

Deuteronomy 6:4-9

4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.

5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.

7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.

9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

Has this year been business as usual for you and your family or do you find yourself needing to form a strategy plan?

In the natural, of course right now is a time to panic. If things ever looked bleak, they do right now. The funny thing about it all, just recently the Lord had to show me a real picture of what it means to trust in Him-what it means if NOTHING that you planned on (no strategies, no food stores, NOTHING) was available to you. He elaborates on this in Luke 12:13-26

13Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me."

14Jesus replied, "Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?"

15Then he said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."

16And he told them this parable: "The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop.

17He thought to himself, 'What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.'

18"Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.

19And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry." '

20"But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?'

21"This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God."

22Then Jesus said to his disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear.

23Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.

24Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!

25Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

26Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?

All in all, my only strategy that I can see is getting rich in the things of God. If He does lead me to prepare physically, then of course I will do so (and I do believe that to an extent He has done so for me, so I purchase just a little more than I need each time I go to the grocery store to make a small stock up, etc.) but that's about it for me and "planning".

Yeah! What do we do about it? Well if the bible tells us what is coming, then we plan for it, right? How do you plan for what we are already in? Do you go and make more money so you can drive your car and keep your house or do you downsize to a bike and a camper? Do you not vote for a president because it's not gonna make a difference anyway... except for them?

Decisions decisions!

Some good Christian folks are freaking out while others hear the news from co-workers.

Are people who do not have cable tv, internet, or newspaper subscriptions happier and less stressed?

Do we go to church 5 times a week, pray 3 times a day, and make sure we have plenty ammo for our gun?

Okay! The simplest and best solution is to trust God and believe that there is a reason to hope. Then, go double bolt all your doors, turn on your outside motion lights, turn on the security alarm, grab your teddy and go nightnight.

Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
And we'll all stay free!

Sorry, had to do it. (If anyone doesn't recognize it, it's an old WWI song, if I remember correctly.)

How ironic to see this reminder and to be reminded of recent remarks by a presidential candidate about Americans clinging to guns and religion.

I was going to list many things that I have read and heard concerning the reason for my title but I am curious if Christians are apathetic or truly aware of what is going on right now in this nation and I want you to share what you know and believe.

So, what are some things going on in this nation that has gotten your attention?

Freedom of speech seems to be in great danger these days and the continuing of greed in this Country that causes recessions, etc. Also, the ever threatening terrorism too.

quote:

Do you believe that there are darker days ahead or nothing to worry about?

Definitely darker, but that is Biblical though.

quote:

In your opinion, what do you believe is our Nation's biggest problem and what do you believe is the remedy?

Both of the above:

1-We need to speak up or else be silenced. The next election is going to be another turning point for this Country. I hope that we err on the side of caution.

2-Companies, people need to be more responsible with financial spending, and companies need to start being accountable as well.

3-We need to remain diligent on fighting terrorism and being alert as well.

Has this year been business as usual for you and your family or do you find yourself needing to form a strategy plan?

Do you think we should start building bomb shelters for the coming Tribulation? Maybe instead of missions our churches should start pooling funds for the persecution that will come?

How do you porepare for a world wide earthquake? Wormwood? The seas turning to blood? If these great apostacies, and moral declines and crisis are some sign of the end times....why wasn't the depression? The recession of the 70's?

We have work to do...we always have had and always will have, until Jesus comes back. I wouldn't worry about the world as much as I would worry about ourselves and our churches. THAT...is where the trouble really is.....if the church becomes perverted, there is little hope...

and THAT will truly usher in the end times. While inroads have been made, its not true perversion yet.

I do think there are a lot of problems that are facing the world. Mainly economic and population problems. With the price of energy and food rising so rapidly and increasing demand for it from all over the world, I can't imagine a future generation having the same standard of living as we do. Things must go downhill simply from a supply perspective. There isn't enough to provide everyone what Americans take for granted. And many people in India, China, and elsewhere are becoming economically better-off, and can afford more things. That will make everyone have to settle for less, in the long run.

The problem is exasperated by waste and destruction which, when you boil it down, comes from sin. War destroys enormous amounts of resources, and there is no war anywhere that doesn't have sin as its root. (There can be a "right" side to a war, see Deuteronomy 20, but without sin it wouldn't need to be waged in the first place.) Greed, another sin, causes a lot more of the waste.

There is a twofold solution -- both parts of the solution rely on Jesus!

To solve the basic supply problem, we need to come up with more energy-efficient and space-efficient ways of providing food and other things people need. This is done with better science and clear-thinking scientists. It is God who gives true intellect for this kind of thing. The best scientists have freely confessed God. Science has progressed most while under the influence of a Christian worldview. (That flies in the face of what the secularists want you to believe, but it's true! Until the early 1600s, science had stagnated for centuries under the influence of various religions and philosophies. After the Reformation, until 100 years ago or so, scientists used the principles of objective truth as taught by Christianity to launch science nearly to where we are today.)

Solving the problem of war and destruction, we need the Kingdom of God to spread. Jesus is said to be the "prince of peace" and the prophet Micah preducts that "they will beat their swords into plowshares, and spears into pruning hooks." Many believe that is to happen in the millennium after Christ's return. But I am no longer premillennial so I don't agree with that at all. I think it is to happen in this age! I see all kinds of evidence throughout the Bible that God's Kingdom should be expected to increase. And that is what is happening.

I agree that we're facing a moral slump now, at least in America, but God's Kingdom is rapidly gaining ground elsewhere.

I think mvic hit the nail on the head earlier in this thread. We all need to be asking God what we can do to further His Kingdom! We need to encourage scientists and other thinkers to do it for God's glory and to seek wisdom from Him. And we need to spread the Kingdom around our country and around the world, for the benefit of the people and to lessen the destruction caused by sin.

These are very good points and I think we all thought about it but just did not expect the reality to hit us in the face and the pocket book.

I guess I need to quit watching the news. Locally, someone was using a pump to steal gas from cars at an apartment complex and I saw this morning where Home Depot closes 15 stores and Disney closes 98.

I doubt Pres. Bush is the main problem we in the US face. He just got stuck on the watch when the chickens came home to roost for previous administrations failures and actions. We don't know the future outcome of this either. Sometimes it takes a while for things to work out as they are supposed to. I mean, how many years did it take for things to get off the ground here during the start of this nation? It did not happen overnight. The media started making this into another Vietnam as soon as they could get by with it.

As far as the problems that could be coming up, let's see how things are after the election. A lot of misinformation is being pedaled in order to drive certain agendas. 24 hour news cycles tends to skew perspectives.

The US Church could stand a good house cleaning IMO as far as that goes. It's too caught up in entertaining the masses and there will be a reckoning of sorts for that. It will be painful for some but it will also be a time of refining. History shows that there are times of prosperity and times of hardship.
