HeisallIneed,

Was your daughter a preemie? I was just wondering because you mentioned that her birth weight was 4 lbs 15 oz. It struck me that your baby has very close to tripled her birth weight, which is generally a good thing.

My youngest dd has had difficulties with her weight for most of her life (she is almost 4 now). Anyway, for adding calories, breastmilk/formula is good. If she is getting adequate amounts of those, some of the other ways to add calories are adding "healthy" fats. I wouldn't use butter/cheese yet, but you could add avocados, olive oil, margarine. It is pretty easy to add fat to pasta and oatmeal/cereal. Sometimes, when babies start on solids, they start eating things like vegetables and fruit, which don't have a lot of calories in them. Protein is also important to add, especially if they reduce the amount of milk that they drink.

Also, if you make sure to not stop offering food until the baby refuses to eat any more, then you can be sure that they are eating enough for them.

No, we have no family food allergies.

She wasn't considered a preemie. She was perfectly healthy. We got to go home in 2 days. She was just small.

One question I have is should I let them do the blood work thing? THey want to because they want to make sure she's ok. They want to give her shots and do blood work in the same visit.

I honestly don't think anything is wrong with her. I think she just needs more formula, fat & protein maybe. She has starting moving a lot lately. She's crawling all over the house. She's also in the walker sometimes.

If I hold her bottle up for her she may drink a little more. Which is what I did starting Fri. night. I can tell she doesn't really want it anymore and is full maybe. But she will drink another oz. or so.

My baby is really, really strong and is into everything. She's so busy and doesn't want me to pick her up because she's so involved in playing and crawling around. Everyweek I see something new she's learning.

What do they want to check for with the bloodwork? I'd try to put it off until a year if you can, because they'll want to do a lead test then anyway, so one less poke. Also, ask for numbing medicine on her skin...it'll make it a whole bunch less traumatic for both of you.

Sounds like she is right on track developmentally, so for that reason, I would not be concerned. I'd just make sure she has her fill of formula before I gave her solids to "play" with.

I'd also suggest putting off the bloodwork, as she is so active and healthy. I'd recommend trying her for a month giving her that bit more formula, plus introducing some protein and fat into her diet, and see how her weight is then.

more then likely the blood work is just to check to make sure her body's levels are where they need to be (growth hormones, etc). Our daughter (the small one) was tested, but only because she had a food allergy to something and her dr ordered a CBC to rule out anything like what you are dealing with as the culprit of maybe her problems. It was just the first step for what her dr wanted...not something we would have done otherwise, but it was good to be able to say for sure that all her organs were functioning and filtering right and that her growth hormone levels were within normal range even though she was small. I don't know if we would choose to do it if it was just for something as basic as her just being small...we chose because of it being more then that with our daughter (her dr was worried, because of her symptoms, that she could be a diabetic). I personally wouldn't choose to do it just because of a small baby though....it was pretty hard on her to do that much blood (the amount required for the CBC that they did with her was 8 viles of blood!!!)

Thank for the replies.

I don't think I will ok the blood work. It doesn't seem like a good idea at this point.

sounds good!! Just remember, if there is an average size (50% range) then there have to be ones bigger AND smaller to make it average out to that medium size....you may just have a smaller one on your hands!!! And who knows...maybe your next baby will be of the charts on the top...lol!!!
