I am trying to learn in-line skating... it looks really fun and it should be great exercise for me. But for some reason my ankles get really sore after just a few minutes of practice. Does anyone have some training advice? And is there a certain skate brand or model that you recommend?

Just keep doing them figure 8's, only way to strengthen the legs is to work them, practice and keep practicing and you'll be right.

There are boots you can get with better ankle support than others, not sure of the brands you have in America, ask someone in an in-line shop, they should be able to help you with that.

What are you skating in now? The trend over the last several years has been to make the boots softer and softer, leading to more sore ankles. The advantage of the hard "ski-boot" looking skates was a lot of support. Hockey skates are very stiff, so you might have better luck with those. Also, make sure your skates are tight enough. You really shouldn't have any give back and forth with your ankles. They should be immobilized inside the skate.

I own a pair of Rollerblade Zetras which seem to be a good quality hard shell skate. I have also tried the Rollerblade Lightining and other name brand skates. But they all hurt my ankles after just a few minutes of practice.

Both of those are pretty low, but they look sturdy, especially the Zetras. It could be that you simply have weak ankles. Maybe try to skate a little longer each day to build up strength? (And check your form...are you standing upright with feet forward? Your ankles should not turn in or out or fall inward toward the ground.)
