I don't watch the Dove awards because I think it leans too much towards CCM...okay not starting a discussion on that but just stating my opinion!!!

I agree that it's heavily bent towards CCM, at least in the televised events. Unfortunately, that's the market calling. If they are going to go to the trouble and expense of doing a live TV broadcast, then they are going to give airtime to the style that generates the most sales numbers, which these days, is CCM.

I was a bit surprised to see SG close the evening. I wasn't familiar with the faces up there, but whoever it was that sang "On Christ The Solid Rock" with Ricky Skaggs was boring as dishwater. The follow up gathering of Karen Peck, the Easters, and (was it the Hoppers?) were excellent.

Who was the fellow with the cap on that was singing bass?

It was The Hoppers!

Who accepted the award for them (SS)?

Do we know they weren't there?

That would be a bummer--win your first two Doves and have to be elsewhere.

That's the reason I asked the question. Who accepted the award? Don't know if they were there or not. Bill Gaither might have accepted it. We're going to see them Saturday night maybe if someone hasn't answered I can find out then.

They are voted on by the members of the Gospel Music Association. Membership with voting rights in most categories is limited to industry professionals. Though I am not currently a member, I am eligible to be a member of the GMA; but though fans can join, they cant vote in at least most of the categories.

wow just about all my picks won. I knew CHris Tomlin would win. P&W is probly the biggest seller of any part of Gospel Music and honestly, no one does P&W better than him. How Great Is Our God is probably one of my fave songs ever recorded period..

lots were deserving but as have stated so many times. some love the music, some dislike it. but if one is led to Christ through the song, it was all worth it.

way to go Casting Crowns by the way. they are my fave group along with Avalon in CCM side even though both are almost considered P&W

Could it have been Mike Hopper? He has been wearing a hat lately.

Gerald Wolfe didn't win the Dove Award for Male Artist.

My feelings exactly!!

But who was it that tafkam said was as boring as dishwater ( )? I don't (didn't) have a way to watch it.

Ricky Skaggs was singing with The Whites. He is married to Sharon White of the famous bluegrass group The Whites. The "part" of the song mentioned was sung by Cheryl, Sharon's sister. Their father, Buck, was on the bass part.

Yes, it was Mike Hopper singing the bass part.

I don't find it surprising that the Dove's are more toward CCM. (It always has been) That is why we have a SGMA and have the fan awards each year at NQC. I think it is great that they sprinkle in some Southern Gospel to the nominees. You certainly won't ever see us including them at a SG awards presentation.

By the way, I am and have always been a Southern Gospel fan FIRST!! There is no music like Southern Gospel.

I wouldn't say always, but they have been for quite a while.

that goes more to sales and such. CCM is much more established as for as sales and tours are from what have seen. SG cd sales are heavy on the concert table with lesser amounts sold in stores and online. unless you in an area with no SG base then you totally online/store buying.

SG concerts may have 100-200 or more on good night at many shows. CCM will sell for the major groups several thousand seats.

another backbreaker from what have seen much is this, 2 different concerts in a town same night. will never see that in CCM side. the booking agents work more together it seems in that genre of the Christian music markets.

the bad thing is, where in SG all groups can go on tours of sorts. CCM the record companies will work more with the established artists than they will with lesser known groups.

On the plus side, the gap between major artists and local/regional acts seems to be less severe in SG. If you're a local or indie CCM artist, good luck getting to open for Steven Curtis Chapman or Third Day.

However, it is quite common for indie SG artists to get on the same bill with name SG acts. I know some guys in a local quartet and they have quite an impressive list of folks that they have shared stages with. Kinda nice, especially if you're wanting to really break into the industry, you have more chance of being seen and noticed by somebody that matters.

Kinda makes me wish I sang SG!

Actually, our choir does a SG styled song that I do the solo on at church, and folks seem to really like it.

I think you have to have a bent towards a certain style, and personally, I think I sound ridiculous.....

Okay, maybe I should explain ....

Certain singers just seem to have a certain style. Brian Free and Petra's John Schlitt could never trade jobs, just because their vocal styles instantly identify them with a given genre.

True, there are some odd cases; David Phelps has moved between SG and Inspo with equal success and ease, but most of us just sound like we "ought to" be singing a certain style of music.

That's why I said I thought I sound ridiculous doing an SG song with our choir.

But the people clap when it's over, so I'll take that.....

I know what you mean. But I just couldn't resist saying something about that sentence.
