Well, clearly a boy's sense of 'natural justice' about sth, including the question of if his mom has double piercings, can he have even one in one earlobe, is going to be guided by what he may hear from parents. I guess I'm referring to any independent thoughts that he may, or may not, have. I find that paragraph offensive. It seems to me you are implying that I don't allow independent thoughts, or that my children don't have the capacity to think them. I assure you neither is true--the boys have plenty of independent thoughts, they just generally share them with me. If they aren't ready to share, I can usually see the cogs turning in their heads anyway.

When I was a teenager in the 80's, boys getting their ears pierced became all the rage. I was tempted to do it in spite of my Dad's warning "not in my house." One day I was talking to my grandfather about his service in WWII. He mentioned that he helped many of his fellow sailors pierce their ears when their ship reached the Phillipines. After that I never really had the urge. I guess just because it wasn't so new and radical it lost its charm to me.

Personally, I don't see a problem with a guy having piercings. So if my son came to me one day and asked to get his ears pierced, I would be 100% ok with it.

While I am baffled - and sorry - that you find the terms, 'natural justice' and 'independent thoughts', as in the context above, offensive, it was certainly unintentional, and I do think it's fair to say that the background of the views that young ppl develop and articulate is so very often in the context of what they know their parents' views are; they know also, and soon grasp that some things things like the apparent raw nerve, which I unintentionally stumbled across, might be best left unsaid. Take care and God bless your family.

ORIGINAL: Jenny-Fair Hmm. As I have said before, it's pretty easy to know what your child is thinking if you have a good relationship with them and pay attention. Well, clearly a boy's sense of 'natural justice' about sth, including the question of if his mom has double piercings, can he have even one in one earlobe, is going to be guided by what he may hear from parents. I guess I'm referring to any independent thoughts that he may, or may not, have. But it's the parent's call, 'natural justice' however defined, or not. My Dad smoked, drank, and did illegal drugs before he became a Christian. He was always very open about it but ya know, I have not tried drugs or cigarettes because they have no appeal to me. Just because a parent does something doesn't mean a child has to make the same decision or that they will even be tempted to make the same decision.

Personally I would be disappointed if my son wanted his ear (s) pierced. I just don't like it on men. Just my personal opinon. But men out there are free to do what they want. My son (if I had one) wouldn't be allowed to do that though as long as he lived under my roof.

Hmmm...maybe not in the sense you mean. By punk, I mean...trouble. Drinking, smoking, hating school, rebelling against authority, shale bed partying, etc. That's what it means around here. But then, we are at least 15 years behind the rest of the world up here in nowheresville.

Um...partying in a shale bed. Drinking, sex, bonfires. It's a common pass-time around here where there's nothing else to do.

I don't believe earrings in either or both ears is associated with being gay anymore. I haven't heard of such in years and years.

I worked with a guy who wore a hoop in each ear and he was definitely not gay. But I did have a strange dream involving him playing the Genie from Aladin He just moved to UTAH---poor guy, I wonder what two hoops means down there.

Well, a while back, all the boys playing football in my street happened to be wearing earrings - in both ears. In the 80's it was often the left ear, anyway.
