TammyIsBlessed -> What to bring on a plane to keep kids entertained (4/15/2008 1:32:50 AM)

We're leaving on a trip to Disney World on Friday - woohoo!!

So, first time on a plane with kids. Our kids are 7, 5, almost 3 and infant.

What should I bring along to entertain them?

They love coloring - but could that be more of a pain than anything - I can just see markers and crayons getting dumped and rolling down the aisles!

Books obviously.

Suggestions?! Tips?

Thanks all!

a handy Play Station will probably do. they will just sit and play all the time during the trip. foods will also make them stay at peace and quite. .

Bring the crayons and coloring books! Then you control the crayons. Bring a limited number in a plastic container with a lid. Hand the crayons out a couple at a time. If this is something they enjoy it's worth the risk that a few crayons are going to roll away. The kids will be happy and so will those on the plane around you! Leave the markers at home tho! Crayons don't seem to leave as horrible a mark on someone's clothing as markers do!

Etch-a- sketches - you can get these in the smaller travel size now.

Blessings,

Garsy

Get fat crayons and put them on tinfoil in a cookies sheet. Heat them up just enough to push them down so they will have flat side. then they won't roll.

As for me... I have never flown, but I would be tempted to bring a laptop with a few Children CDs and a DVD that they might enjoy. Is there a reason why that wouldn't work for a plane trip?

Portable DVD players are VERY inexpensive these days...

4 kids to Disney? including a 3 year old AND an infant? GOOD LUCK!

angie4God -> RE: What to bring on a plane to keep kids entertained (4/15/2008 11:11:57 AM)

I definitely agree with the portable DVD players. DH got these ones called "Juice Box" that KB Toys was selling for like 30 cents!!! cause the strore was going out of business and not only that, they don't make those anymore so he bought about 5 of em LOL! We always have em in the car. "Video Now" is another brand that I think isn't put out anymore that sells cheap too. You might find them in Toys R Us.

Do let us know how the trip goes. We're planning on going with our two DDs (5 and 3 years old) in July ugh! hottest time of the year[8|]. But the only time we can co-ordinate and join up with my brother and the other grandkids. It will be the first time my Dad will be going to Disney and with his grandchildren so it'll be worth it [:)]

Well, we're not totally crazy. My husband's parents are coming with us as well as his sister and her husband (they have no kids yet). So, that's 6 adults and 4 kids so I think we should be ok. (crosses fingers!)

I know Michael's sells triangular crayons that don't roll, I actually have some myself[;)]

A DVD player, or even just a laptop for movies.

Snacks

Dramamine[8D]

Tammy, you are finally going! How long is your flight and is it direct? I brought my kids a bag lunch minus the drink because we couldn't bring liquids on the plane and they did get juice during the flight. But I did bring cups that had lids and straws for them. So if you go to McDonald's or something and ask them for a few water cups and lids, they might give them to you, unless you have the plastic tupperware cups.

We brought the DVD player, but even with the headphones, the noise on the plane was too loud and it was hard to hear. But it might have just been my DVD player. They also brought their gameboys. My son brought a book to read, and I brought coloring books and books to read to my daughters.

For me, I brought lots of clonozopam. I hate flying.

IAMJulie -> RE: What to bring on a plane to keep kids entertained (4/15/2008 5:15:07 PM)

We traveled a ton over the summer with our two who were 3 and 1 at the time. For DS we packed his very own backpack with snacks and a sippy cup for starters. The he got to bring a few of his Thomas trains (the little metal ones), his LeapFrog Leapster and a few games (we got him a brand new game that would keep his attention for a while), and a book or two. We also packed him a CD walkman with storybooks on tape and his favorite song CD. Once we brought him the Crayola Colormagic books and magic markers (the kind that only color in the book) and another time we brought him an invisible ink activity book so we only had one pen to keep track of.

For my one year old, we brought her cup and snacks and her favorite stuffed animal, a couple of little toys and a couple of books. She really, really enjoys the touch-and-feel and lift-the-flap books so we got her one or two brand new ones to keep her attention longer as well. For her we were mostly her entertainment so we didn't bring a ton.

We're driving to a city in the States first and flying direct from there (much cheaper this way!!!). So, our flight is direct and it's approx 3 hrs. It leaves at 8am and we get there around 11.

We don't have gameboys.

sunshine4God -> RE: What to bring on a plane to keep kids entertained (4/15/2008 10:35:13 PM)

When I flew to Disney I brought my portable cd player,a couple fave cds,and my gameboy color. When I was a kid on long trips I always brought my crayons, and coloring books since coloring was my fave thing to do.

Krislynx -> RE: What to bring on a plane to keep kids entertained (4/15/2008 11:04:21 PM)

Do your older 2 like activity books: connect the dots, hidden pictures etc.? That might provide some extra diversion and won't take up a lot of extra room. I have seen books that also had coloring pages so you could get it all in one book. And I am not sure if this is a good idea with the 3 year old but maybe magnetic travel games?

I just put gameboys in case you did have them, or wanted to buy them. If not, that's fine, of course. I also just thought of sticker books. I've seen kids entertained by those for hours.

Do you live out of the U.S.? I didn't know that. If you want to share, I'd love to know. If not, that's fine, of course.

TammyIsBlessed -> RE: What to bring on a plane to keep kids entertained (4/16/2008 12:11:16 AM)

Yup, we're Canadians.

Melitac -> RE: What to bring on a plane to keep kids entertained (4/16/2008 2:18:13 AM)

Have a fun trip!!!

I think the best ideas have been stated already.

But what about just some MP-3 player music for the littlest? Music calms so well.

I know several ppl that have ttaken trans-Atlantic flights and did quite well with just the ideas already mentioned.

Just said a prayer for your travel safety, have FUN Momma!!!

2shaye -> RE: What to bring on a plane to keep kids entertained (4/16/2008 12:38:48 PM)

Pipe cleaners! They are lightweight, don't roll around or melt, easy to clean up and provide hours of creative entertainment for all ages!

Also, a Where's Waldo type of book would keep the older ones busy for awhile.

edgibson -> RE: What to bring on a plane to keep kids entertained (4/16/2008 1:11:16 PM)

Gum for the older ones. Helps to clear ears.

If there are games that they like to play you can see if they make a travel version.

If you do choose to take a gameboy or the like, be sure to bring batteries.

pbaribeault -> RE: What to bring on a plane to keep kids entertained (4/16/2008 6:51:10 PM)

Liquid Gravol for those over 2... But by the time you know you need it, it's too late (done that!) so I'm all for preemptive dosing now. (Bring what you need to pour out/measure the doses.)

Something like this is great for holding crayons in:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Kids-Super-Clipboard-Case-with-Accessories-NEW-item_W0QQitemZ320064229183QQihZ011QQcategoryZ28145QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1638Q2em118Q2el1247

I found one at a thrift store for a dollar, and it held everything great. I just tore out a bunch of pages before we left and she took one out at a time and put it under the clip. We also have a portable DVD player, but I only pulled it out when she got bored with everything else I brought for her to use. Someone else mentioned a mini etch a sketch which is great too. I have seen those at Michaels for a dollar. The kids could play lots of games on it together. Some mini travel games might be good as well.

On the plane to Disney World last time, me and my sister brought our iPods, and our own Nintendo DS-s. We also brought DVD players in case our iPods died. And GUM! Your ears will drive you insane without it.

TammyIsBlessed -> RE: What to bring on a plane to keep kids entertained (4/29/2008 10:35:15 AM)

Well, the flights went great and our trip was fantastic!!!!

There was even one day where hubby and I took all 4 kids to Magic Kingdom by ourselves - and we survived! Actually, it went very well. 2 were in strollers, and the older 2 had to hold on to the strollers - it went perfect.

ROFL!!

I'm glad your trip was a success!

Another great thing to bring along for a child to keep their ears from popping is licorice.
