sgpianoman -> numbers 11:25 (4/7/2008 11:30:16 AM)

Trying to get a clear meaning on this particular scripture. At the ending of the verse it says that those prophesying "did not cease". Other version Nkjv/niv ect say "they never did so again" or "they stopped". Is there some sort of translation of the wording "cease" in kjv thats not coming across? Just wondering...some commentaries are not answering. thanks everyone in advance

That is interesting, but I'm not sure it is significant. In may be implying that Adonai was using the elder to further establish Moshe's authority and that, apart from this incident, Moshe was the only one who spoke for Adonai in the wilderness.

Crosswalk's study tools show that the Greek for "cease" can also mean "to add, increase, do again" so its not the same as the English word is usually defined. Differehnt translators used different words. But the Greek word is the same. [8|]

Hello,

The Hebrew phrasing of the latter part of this verse is “vayitnavu v’lo yasaphu” which can literally be translated as “and they prophesied and they did not add.” The problem is the verb yasaph meaning “to add” which could mean that they prophesied and didn’t do it again or they prophesied and they didn’t add anything else (in other words, that is all they did). This is an occasional problem where the Hebrew is a bit ambiguous and allows for differing translations that depend on the translators to interject their “opinion.” By the way, I think “cease” (from the KJV) is a pretty poor translation since the Hebrew word for “cease” is shavat (the root of the word Shabbat/Sabbath, a day of ceasing).

Hi there,
This verse is relating how the children of Israel were complaining about lack of food. Moses went to God about it and God got Moses to assemble 70 elders from the different tribes. When they were gathered together God took some of the Spirit that was on Moses and put it onto the seventy. To show that they indeed had the Spirit upon them, they did prophecy. It seems to be a 'one time thing'. They did not do it again. They were there to help share the burden that Moses bore in tending to all the children of Israel, and prophesying continually would not have a great benefit to Moses at all.

Words in the Bible do have different meanings depending on where they are used. This is where we need a good concordance and THE HELP OF THE HOLY SPIRIT to guide us. Sometimes it will lead us into revelation that is different from what a majority of churches and denominations teach. As a watchman, I know this happens and are criticized for speaking out. I say this as I have a feeling that if you allow the full leading of the Holy Spirit in your life and your study, and use plenty of prayer, that you will be called into a testing, but rewarding role.
