wintery -> The Jesus Box (4/2/2008 5:18:10 PM)

A knock on my door last evening heralded the event. I answered the door and found my wife's aunt on my doorstep, holding a cardboard box.
"I have something to show you." She had a strange look and seemed both uncertain and resolute--a paradox holding an enigma.

I thought, "What's up? What's with the box? Is she toting free kittens? No thanks!", but simply replied, "Ye-eah?"

Aunt B turned the box around and I saw it. "Oh...you got a Jesus box, B". A greasemark of some kind surely looked like a watermark Jesus. B told me "I was cleaning up and was about to throw it away when I saw it."

I told her, "Well, if you could get somebody to put it on ebay, you might have a thousand bucks there...but I wouldn't." She was still so impressed with the image--"This doesn't just...happen." Uh-oh, she was too serious. "Look, don't be superstitious. Do not go beyond the written Word." She persisted, "But look at it. This is special." I would have none of it, so I facetiously took the other extreme. "Fine, put it on a pedestal and worship it. Take it to (her Third Wave) Church, they'll have a revival. But I've got to go to the bathroom".

Later I thought about how the greasemark image looked much better than most images that are purported to be supernatural. Well, God bless Aunt B anyway.

I wondered what you all thought about mysterious images--faith builders or deceptions?

thanks---------wintery

coincidences that become deceptions

themoodyexperience -> RE: The Jesus Box (4/2/2008 5:29:19 PM)

Nobody knows what Jesus looked like. I saw a documentary that said artists based the generic Jesus image on the statue of Zeus at the temple at Olympia, Greece. So I think it's ll just hysterics.

Mysterious images appearing... I wouldn't "rule it out", per se, because of visions and stuff like that. However, 95% of the time (I'm thinking about stuff like "I found Mother Mary in my Jell-o!") it is people with active imaginations seeing a coincidental resemblance that then go haywire. As far as Jesus causing His image to appear, stranger things have happened on the earth. If someone is worshipping their image, congratulations, they are into idolatry. Pray for wisdom and revelation... that's the best thing you can do.

I'm just wondering if she's gonna sell it on Ebay... Might as well make it mean something! ($) 'Cause other than that, it's a grease stain on a box...

Well, exactly. How do people know these images look like Jesus. Or Mary, for that matter. Whether it's an apparition or an image smeared on a box, they always look amazingly like the man-made interpretations in the form of statues and paintings that people have been bowing to or looking at for centuries.

wintery -> RE: The Jesus Box (4/3/2008 12:38:13 PM)

Last I heard poor Aunt B was still showing that box to everyone she knows.

She's a prime example of what happens after years of going to a church where it's "anything goes" in the name of "prophetic" or supernatural. There's every bit as much validity to her cardboard box as there is to the latest "word" from a "show-prophet", that is--zero.

Thanks for the interesting replies, and earthless, I think I'll buy her some napkins, thanks.

Please tell me that's not real. If it is, it might end up being Paul and Jan's love gift for the month of April.

Nah, the love gift won't be that good! Hey do you think we could get Karen Wheaton to take Aunt B with her next time she sings on praiseathon?

You better hope your mom doesn't come home from church with tales of Aunt B's box...you know she goes to their church!

Tomb -> RE: The Jesus Box (4/16/2008 6:01:53 AM)

Our minds need to be on the words of Christ rather than on His image (John 14:15,21 ; 15:10,14).

(Acts 11:14) - 14 Who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.

Yeah. A little update...it came to my attention this weekend that another lady in the same church says she has had the face of Jesus on a roll of paper towels for three weeks. Like a lot of topics, I regret on one hand bringing them up for fear of creating copycats, and on the other hand I want folks who encounter these things to realize that we don't put our faith in them. The immediate jokes my buddy and I had were regarding whether it was a strong Jesus on Brawny or a prosperous Jesus on Bounty. Bottom line, it's a paper towel, people, just use it.

That particular church is going through a trying time as their pastor resigned and they are in suspense to see if he'll be reinstated. The stress must be getting to them. That would be why we also don't put our faith in people, as well as boxes, paper towels....

ed00 -> RE: The Jesus Box (4/18/2008 5:40:45 PM)

Just wanted to let y'all know that WHNT Channel 19 in Huntsville, AL is going to be doing a story on a similar situation up there in Muscle Shoals. I'm not sure if it's the same lady and box but here's the link to the story and pictures. http://www.whnt.com/global/Story.asp?s=8194532 There's supposed to be more information there after the story airs at 6 pm CST.

Lycea -> RE: The Jesus Box (4/21/2008 4:58:46 PM)

Wow, interesting. I wouldn't worship the box, but if it causes someone to wake up and pay attention, and think maybe God has something to say to me...I think that's ok. I would still throw out the box, and the paper towel, but pay attention to the one who is just powerful (and just humorous) enough to put a wake-up call on a paper towel or an old box.
After all, Moses listened to the burning bush, but he didn't dig it up and take it with him back to Egypt as some kind of good-luck token.

cybrjewls -> RE: The Jesus Box (4/21/2008 7:44:28 PM)

LOL!! I guess, you do not have God on a box after all! All things that were made were made through Him and for Him and by Him.

I have a new nickname for you; it's "dots", because that's the only way I can pronounce what you are currently typing for a user name.

anyway, "dots", did you think I had God on a box? If you read it I rejected the idea and put it here for discussion, because "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man"(1 Corinthians 10:13) and so we are not alone in any problem of spiritual error.

I had a CD that I thought had an image of Jesus on the cover. Turned out that it was Ted Nugent. [;)]

Tomb, I agree with you >> Our minds need to be on the words of Christ rather than on His image (John 14:15,21 ; 15:10,14).

I have observed that we are all looking for evidence of God and something that will bring us closer to Him. Sometimes it appears that we are trying too hard to make something out of nothing. Come on, a sandwich, the bark on a tree, the way the light reflects off of the painted surface of a wall, an image on a box...

On the one hand, I do not wish to take away from anything that sincerely draws someone who is seeking to a closer relationship with Christ, especially if it gets them to read their Bible, worship and pray more. However, at the same time, since no one knows what Jesus looked like, we are stretching it a bit when we claim to have seen His image here or there.

We should desire to read about His life and teachings and about how we can become more like Him instead of going around looking for His "image" here or there. Imagine how much we would grow in our faith and witness if we studied the life of Christ!

God bless you as you sincerely seek to see Jesus in your life.

I agree. On AOL a couple days ago, they showed pictures where Mary "so called" appeared. There was a image on this building with windows, and some of the windows were on a angle, and people "saw" an image of Mary. It was awfully funny it was quite sunny outside. I laughed, and I was thinking to myself, the light could've reflected off the windows just right to make an image of "Mary." There was also some other wacky stuff too. There was an image of Mary on a piece of toast even, and a piece of chocolate.

There is some wacky stuff out there, and I think it is all from the imagination.

I thought of a Scripture for this.

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

(Matthew 6:19-21)

Would the One who said this give you a picture on a cheese sandwich or a box, sure to decay as time goes by? NO way.

We all should listen to the Klu now.... with klux and not klan... or, should I say, clue.....clucks....clan, for Jesus will choose from among all of the tribes on earth is written..... For God is Lord over our imagination, too.....
