Here is what I have been able to find out:

Gluttony: Hebrew from zalal, "to shake," hence to "be loose" morally.
A debauchee (Deuteronomy 21:20; Proverbs 23:21); "gluttonous" (Proverbs 23:20; 28:27), meaning a free liver, one who is unrestrained (Matthew 11:19; Luke 7:34 Another definition for "glutton" comes from The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, which says, in part, "zalel, "to be lavish; ... To shake or pour out, ... to be lavish, a squanderer."

This is interesting. It sounds to me like "to over-do" is the issue.

But around these forums, I've seen it used many, many times in reference to fat people. And why isn't the church worrying about gluttony (being fat) the way it fusses about other sins.

To look at a person's appearance and label them as a glutton is just as ignorant as the hicks around here (where I live) who say they can tell just by looking at someone that they're gay.[8|]

FYI - these are from two distinctly different roots that just happen to be spelled the same i.e. like 'SAW" (to cut) and "SAW" (to see) in English. ZLL in Proverbs doesn't mean "to shake", but "to be frivolous or despised; to treat lightly" (Verb), and "vileness" (noun)

Gluttony is not a topic I am comfortable with, because I have a suspicion I may be guilty of it. I like Bluestone's definition, because I am not a glutton by that definition, and it makes sense without explaining it away. Eating until sick (somebody else mentioned that, too, that it was a common thing in that culture), or eating to keep someone else from getting something sounds like it might really be what it is getting at. I'm not too sure about Mrsdash's definition, even though that would excuse me, too. I just don't see rebellion in every mention of the word in Scripture. But I have a sneaking suspicion that eating because of boredom, eating to make me feel better when I'm down, or piling up my plate at potlucks and buffets really is gluttony, and then I have to say that I am guilty as charged![&o]

there are very few scripures with any form of the word gluttonony. (gluttony is not in there though) it would be easy to look them up and see if it is not a rebellious unbeliever beind described.

Annie64 -> RE: what is gluttony? (4/6/2008 2:44:52 AM)

Wow! You're right! I just looked! I thought it was in there more! I still don't see rebellion in the verse in Proverbs, though. It sounds to me like it's talking about someone who is on some kind of feeding frenzy, but I don't see any mention of rebellion. I'm not saying it isn't there; I just don't see it. Where do you see it?

OLEEguacamole -> RE: what is gluttony? (4/6/2008 2:54:19 AM)

if you read proverbs and back up to verse 19 you will see that v. 21 is part of what is being said.

also the definition of the word used is consistent with that idea:

to be worthless, be vile, be insignificant, be light
(Qal)
to be worthless, be insignificant
to make light of, squander, be lavish with
to shake, tremble, quake
(Niphal) to shake, quake

the same word is used in proverbs 28:7 comparing the godly to the ungodly.

Annie64 -> RE: what is gluttony? (4/6/2008 3:41:55 AM)

So...you're saying that not joining with those who "gorge themselves on meat" (NIV) is part of "keep[ing] your heart on the right path." I think I'm starting to see it. Rebellion is going down the wrong path, and the wrong path is what drunkars and gluttons are on. Then 28:7 contrasts those who keep the law with "a companion of gluttons." Okay. I think I see where you're coming from now. Thanks.

Gluttony is what Christians do on Sundays after Church when they saddle up to the buffet trough.

crm4souls -> RE: what is gluttony? (4/7/2008 5:51:17 PM)

The question should not be what is gluttony, but what is the solution to gluttony or obesity? There is a problem today, but what is the solution?

OLEEguacamole -> RE: what is gluttony? (4/7/2008 6:14:39 PM)

you're talking about a health issue, not a biblically defined, sin issue.

bluestone -> RE: what is gluttony? (4/8/2008 10:39:48 AM)

Exactly. Unhealthy does not equate sinful.

small_creation -> RE: what is gluttony? (5/13/2008 1:36:18 PM)

I thought I should enter this discussion. I believe I have the sin of gluttony. Yes, I am referring to food, overeating. Yes, I am overweight, obese even. Not an easy thing to reveal but there it is.

I believe gluttony is a form of idoltry. When you're an overeater, as I am, you go through the day wondering what your next meal and snack will be. You spend a lot of time thinking about it. As the wife of a skinny, hardworking man, I can see the differences in him and I and how he does not think about his next meal from his last.

I believe the bible tells us to keep our thoughts on higher matters than that the world offers. Keeping my thoughts centered around what my tongue would next enjoy is certainly a worldy concern and does seem like a form of idoltry to me, i.e. it is a second master, when I am sure there should only be One.

When I have taken the time to diet, my mind still focuses on food and what to next eat, but I use my time more wisely, using it to concentrate on accomplishing a task and not just accomplishing passing the time until my next meal or snack.

This is a willfull sin that I deeply struggle with.

you have many physiological reasons for thinking about eating constantly. it is a difficult thing to break out of without medical help and counseling.

gluttony involves rebelling aginst God. not caring about Him or right living. if you care about your standing with God, this does not likely describe you. many people struggle with smoking (for instance) and cannot get out of it. you are in much the same trap and need help. your body will not allow you to eat right and think right at this time. it takes help.

God is merciful and gives grace. cast your cares on Him as often as you need to, and get help.
