I have a job working fast food, and I have a question for all of you. Do you feel that it is okay to talk on the cell phone while you are placing an order, paying, or recieving your food?
On numerous occations I have found myself frustrated by people not paying attention to me when I am trying to do my job. They are either engrossed in conversation with someone else in the car, or they are on their cell phone.
I am 34 years old, not some teenager. Yet, the respect for me is gone because I work in fast food.
Please think about the person at the window the next time you order. You might be able to plant a seed where one has not been planted before by showing kindness and respect for that person.

Thank you for your post, Beck34. I'm afraid this problem is not only found in fast food restaurants and drive-thru windows. Part of my job duties includes telephone customer service (responsibilities I did not want, but was forced into when others were laid off). I have also worked in retail and waited on customers face-to-face. I often find it appalling how the public treats these kinds of employees. I've been cussed at, hung up on, usually yelled at on a daily basis (by the customers, not my boss), and treated basically like a non-person. Several times while on the phone with customers, I have heard him/her flushing the toilet! That's about as disrespectful as you can get!

So, yes, next time you're a little frustrated with a business - please don't take it out on the person trying to help you or serve you. And treating the employees with respect and your full attention is always appreciated (not to mention our Christian obligation).

Jesus tells us to love one another. How can we show we are Christians with attitudes like that? I really pray that this will reach someone. If one person treats a person in retail or fast food with respect, I have done my job!

Its everywhere working with the public but it has been getting worse and worse over the years. I worked retail high school/parts of college and have gone back once in a while for part time . The first time it was a few of the people were rude and impatient and now its the majority of the people. Manners have gotten worse and yes there are a few customers who feel the need to belittle those working these min wage jobs.

I agree with what others have posted!

I have worked at Wal Mart, Wendy's and now for UPS. Even at UPS there are people who are busy talking on their cell phones while I'm trying to wait on them. I've had to wait until a customer gets off the phone or puts the other person on hold so that I could get them to sign paperwork. I've had them get mad at me for interrupting their conversation and I've also had customers get mad at me because I did let them sign the paperwork and it turned out to have some wrong info, so their package didn't get where it was supposed to go.

I got an old e-mail yesterday about Bibles and cell phones. It was very interesting the first time I read it and I took it to heart. Yesterday when I had gotten it again from a dear friend, I realized that I couldn't find my Bible for church on Sunday and that I hadn't looked for it since. However, my cell phone had been with me or charging all during that time. I found my Bible in about 30 minutes.

But that's really kind of off topic, my apologies to Beck for taking your thread OT.

This needs to be restated IMO. Regardless of the job someone has, we should show them the same respect we would want. I don't know of anyone that actually wants to be disrespected.

The person behind that person in the drive through is frustrated, too!

It is amazing to me that cell phones have become a part of the body - some people can't go anywhere until it is attached to the ear. I think it has become the new way to ignore someone.

We have many customers who come in to get their mail just talking up a storm. I always turn to look to see if they're talking to me or not. One customer comes in everyday at the same time to get his mail. He's talking away on his phone (attached to his ear). I always wave as he goes by. The other day he came in and said "Hey, how are you?" I just smiled and waved. When he stopped at the counter, I realized that he was actually talking to me.

I agree. In the breakroom at Wal Mart, I'd often hear co-workers complain about how they get ignored because the customer is on the phone. What was really sad is how often a customer would be trying to take care of several children, talk on the phone, etc and not even notice the warnings about wet floors, etc.

I totally agree with your thoughts. I work at McDonald's-currently a manager in training- and the nerve of some people! lol I got yelled at by one customer the other day because I was trying to take her order, and I didnt' realize that she was on her cell phone...don't people realize that not only does it slow us down(and try our patience) but it also aggravates every other customer in line? Oh well...you can't really do anything about it.

I agree violinist!

However, if people won't even stop talking on the phone long enough to tend to their kids while driving their cars, what makes us think they'll hang up long enough to get courteous customer service or worry about the others in line behind them.

It is amazing how much response this topic has recieved. Yet, to my amazement, an odd thing happened to me last night. Those of you who work fast food will find this hilarious!
This old lady came through the first window and paid for her food. Instead of stopping at the next window, she pulled forward and parked! I went to give her the food she ordered, and I asked her why she pulled up instead of stopping at the window. She said, "Well, I have been so used to pulling up to save your drive-through time that I thought I would save your time more by going ahead and pulling up!"
I asked her if she was a christian, and she said she had been serving Christ for 40 years. She said she would pray for me, and as, she drove away, I thanked God once again for the customers who are kind.

Well... I work in a research clinic doing interviews with people, and sometimes even here they will talk on their phones or text during interviews... so it isn't just fast food/cashiers/etc that experience it.

I wouldn't consider it disrespect due to your position, just a general lack of manners.

I am so sorry that people disrespect you in that way! I think that the lack of respect is due to the deteriorating belief in Christ amoung people. I have thought about handing those folks a tract, but I don't know if it would do any good. What do you think?

They probably wouldn't realize you handed them anything at all.

I know! How do you witness to your customers if they don't pay attention?
I am finding that my attitude is changing with each passing day on this subject. In the latest Joyce Meyer magazine, she talks about changing your thinking. I am trying to change my attitude about serving customers at work, but it is hard when drive-thru is wrapped, going on twelve minutes, three cars are pulled up, and the kitchen staff seems to have lead in their shoes! I have worked in the kitchen so I know how hard it is, but it is so hard to sympathise with them when I have customers cussing me about waiting. I imagine there are other jobs that have similar frustrations. I am going to try praying right before I head to work. I'll let you know how my night goes!

I know! I just have to remind myself that, even though they are running up my drive-thru time, that may be the only money they have to feed themselves. When I take that attitude, it makes it much easier to deal with.

That reminds me of the time back in high school when I worked at the front desk of a local pool. Some punk eighth-grader thinks he is so hilarious. He decides that he is going to pay the $6 admission in pennies, nickels and dimes.

So the first thing I do is take care of the customers paying in dollar bills first. The second thing I do is not let him into the pool until I count everything. Let's just say the the joke wound up being on him.

That was a good one! I had a lady come through front counter the other night with five little kids. She was frazzled by the youngest two crying that her hands shook as she was trying to pay. When she realized that she didn't have enough money, she began to cry. She was about 2 dollars short, but I put my own money in to cover the differerance. When she asked me why I did that for her, I explained to her that it is what Jesus would have wanted me to do. She smiled, and then she said that Jesus must be really awesome to have somone as nice as me following Him. I explained to her that the kindness I showed to her pailed in comparison to the kindness of Jesus. I was able to open a diologue of communication about Jesus through a simple act of kindness to someone I didn't even know, and I feel so much richer for the experience! Jesus taught me a powerful lesson about my job that day. It is not about how little I make, but the fact that I can make a differance by doing something so small. How great is that!

That is pretty incredible, and it shows that we can show the love of Jesus in our jobs very well. It's not just a vocation; it's also a mission field.
