I found you all! That is good enough for me . . . even if everyone is using the same avatar just to confuse me more .

Happy April Fool's Day

I heard the best office prank:

Apparently someone posted signs on the bathroom doors at hubby's work . . . "Sorry we're out of toilet paper, please use your own resources"

So far, I have not personally met anyone else here IRL. I think that Jenny-Fair and Cynthia live the closest to me and that would still be at least a day's drive.

Narnia, I'm doing alright. I can't go into details, but lets just say that there is a huge spiritual battle going on in my house. I'm praying and fasting over this. I don't think that ever in my life have I had to be so dependent on the Lord as I am right now. So that's in in a nutshell.

Maybe some day we'll meet. We could have Northwest gathering!

LisaBagel, The hardest battles in my life have yielded the greatest victories or in very unexpected outcomes. Keep up the fight. Do not give in to the enemy. His greatest weapon is to make us think we are losing so we will give up. Right when the battle is the darkest and things looks so bleak, when we feel bloody and worn, the enemy wants us to believe that we have lost and should just lay down and die. Don't do it! He is just as wounded and is using the weapon of fear to cow us and make us quit.
1 Timothy 1:7
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and sound judgment.

Romans 12:212 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Sort of new here, at least I've never posted on the chat thread.

So do you guys all know each other IRL or what?

My boys are the same height and basic size so everybody mixes them up unless they know them really well.

I have no interesting avatar or signature but I enjoyed the "Who Moved My Scepter" title the best.

Some of us have met irl and some of us have not. I will be meeting Cindybode on April 8th when she is on her way to pick up her daughter at Jennifer's.

Eventually you'll have enough posts to get a custom avatar.

#1 most important thing here- David wrote an amazing poem! It is really good. and I mean that.

quote:

ORIGINAL: Ellie-Mae

This is David's Sonnet- first draft:

Was to ride into battle,
The daring knight.
He got his saddle,
In the middle of the night.
He was going to fight
With shield and sword
To make wrong turn to right
With God's Holy Word.
With a prayer to the Lord
He charged into war,
Took blade from scabbard,
Ready to spar,
And displaying his courage,
Fought for his village.

AAAAAH! Now I have to learn about sonnets so I can grade this thing!

Ellie-

E-how "How to write a sonnet"

#2 He has the English sonnet rhyme pattern down(abab cdcd efef gg), now to get into the Iambic pentameter part of the lines.

hehehehe...

or rather

duh-DUH-duh-DUH-duh-DUH-duh-DUH-duh-DUH.

for more along the actual THOUGHT pattern of the sonnet as it is more than the rhyme pattern and iambic pentameter. See the Sonnets for Dummies website HERE

quote:

Ah, but there's more to a sonnet than just the structure of it. A sonnet is also an argument — it builds up a certain way. And how it builds up is related to its metaphors and how it moves from one metaphor to the next. In a Shakespearean sonnet, the argument builds up like this:

* First quatrain: An exposition of the main theme and main metaphor.

* Second quatrain: Theme and metaphor extended or complicated; often, some imaginative example is given.

* Third quatrain: Peripeteia (a twist or conflict), often introduced by a "but" (very often leading off the ninth line).

* Couplet: Summarizes and leaves the reader with a new, concluding image.

Shakespeare Sonnet 116:

Let me not to the marriage of true minds

Admit impediments. Love is not love

Which alters when it alteration finds,

Or bends with the remover to remove:

O no! it is an ever-fixed mark

That looks on tempests and is never shaken;

It is the star to every wandering bark,

Whose worths unknown, although his height be taken.

Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks

Within his bending sickle's compass come:

Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,

But bears it out even to the edge of doom.

If this be error and upon me proved,

I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

William Shakespeare

Dentist Update-

Oh and I like sonnet #18 a whole lot too.

Yeah back to the dentist...

Triss had to hold my hand through most of it. I felt light headed from holding my breath when I should not have and I have a serious headache from that now.

The prognosis- Same as back in 2004.

I am going to be getting a partial. They are going to remove 4 teeth- well 5 actually but the wisdom tooth is going to come out with the one next to it without being asked and as it is not actually "out"... Okay so 5 teeth. but the partial will only be for the two on each side in the bottom that they will be removing.

I also need 4 tiny filings. really tiny but he said best to get them in now than wait til they are big. translates. Best to do some tiny fillings before the extractions to de-sensitize me to the facility and the folks therein before they go into extractions and partials.

I nearly bawled like a baby 3 or 4 times during the poking around and cleaning. Thankfully the Dentist told her not to mess with the 4 they are removing past scraping the obvious loose surface stuff and polishing them. I think he was concerned that she'd end up dong an extraction right there if she got to scraping hard.

I could remove the one with very little work but I do not want to risk the infection or dry socket that might follow my self removal.

**SIGH**

Over all it was not the worst visit. the initial gal to see me *Ahem* had not been warned. It distressed her and OBVIOUSLY distressed me. HELLO! after all the warning my husband and 15yo gave yesterday the gal doing my xrays did not KNOW my situation? I am gonna ask for my folder so i can write in red SHARPIE on it... "PHOBIC" handle with great care- on the cover.

The xray techie came in at the end to go over the cost of the course of action laid out by the dentist. She took one look at me and said "Your husband will be in tommorrow right? I will just chat with him then..." I said Good Idea! he'd have to make the appt times anyway as he WILL be here to hold my hand for any further procedures.

I would not be at all suprised if the gal calls him and TELLS him that they are gonna view me as a minor unable to make decisions and that being such a PARENT or GUARDIAN will be required to come in with me and my 15 and 17yo daughters don't count.

About David's Poem: I told him all the things that I liked about it and we read your post together (explaining it piece by piece). He got his info off the Wikki sight which did not go into as much detail (or he hadn't read it that thoroughly). Thank you for your links and explanations. He is not discouraged at all. He wants to write more to his poem using the same pattern. He is also still looking forward to trying his hand again at writing a sonnet. Thank you so much. this might be fun.

Did you know that Functions not only can be increasing or decreasing but also concave up and concave down? Russ just explained it to me last night to see if I understood him so he could tell if his students would understand him, and to figure out how to explain it better. I love being his guinie pig, but it is kind of scary when it is for a Calculus course and I have only had trig and don't remember most of THAT! To boot, I was very out of it last night too. He must have done a good job of it.

I am surprised that you would like sonnet #118 where he basically is telling the girl that she is really "hot" like summer is. I just didn't think that would appeal to you.

OK, so I got that little summation from Suite Life of Zack and Cody. Sad... I know.

Yes I did. In fact I taught that when I subbed for my mom. I had to teach x^3, x^4 and x^5 functions. They had done quadratics: x^2 in Alg II.

Okay ellie- I just wanted to be 100% clear that he had written a really good poem.

a friend of ours from northern VA (Nick Cummins age 17) wrote a sonnet- it is an english sonnet and not as "old English" as Shakespeare's if it will help David.

Sonnet 2

For as the earth has made its shape a sphere,
For as the wind doth blow waves o’er the trees;
The sun shines light upon all we hold dear,
There are but few constant things such as these.
The pale light which doth govern the dark night,
Although the man within remains not fain
To stay whole and full as he takes his flight,
Constant he yet stays though he waxes; wanes.
Death still comes to collect his dreadful dues,
Seas rise up and soon cast themselves back down.
Bows of light, post rain, still yield their bright hues
Grass grows green; the dust of earth still lies brown.
All these I have named have been and shall be,
Brief! They are, compared to my love for thee.

-Nick Cummins 2007

It took him quite a while to get me to grasp that. It made NO sense at all to me... it didn't help that i was sleep deprived and in pain. It was like he was speaking in another language. It took quite a while for me to start to get what he was saying. I really question his wisdom in trying to teach me anything last night as a way to see what his students would understand. Russ just told me, though, that I needed the handicap in order to be equivalent to 18/19 year old students.

Ez, that was beautiful. I just wish that I could read them smoothly. I sound like I have speech impediment when I try. I don't know why I can't read them smoothly. Maybe because the sentence structures are all funny.

No, I bought a "cheapie" little Math book at walmart. Maybe it will be good enough and then I can just buy her a 1st gr. book when she finishes it. Or... maybe her K5 Math book will appear one of these days.

Do you ever feel like the devil is against home schooling??? Seems like when we are ready to try something (like me, trying to be more consistent with sitting down with DD) then something goes wrong, or disrupts. Some disruptions would be the phone, can't finding pencils, misplacing a book, no pencil sharpener... and then again, maybe it is just life and being 'scattered brained'.

So I'm explaining to my dh that we homeschoolers are taking over the world for April Fool's and Patrick glares at me and states in no uncertain terms that it is NOT a joke.

Jesse has another fever. He missed tae kwon do and root beer floats at youth group (he is too young for youth group, but he could have gone in when we dropped the other kids off and they would have given him a float), so I got some ice cream and root beer for him when I was out earlier. He had been looking forward to his float all week.

It started out as a really nice spring day. By 4pm the temperature had dropped like a rock and I think the wind chill was in the teens. Oh, you think it's spring? April Fools!

Of course he is! You would not believe how that struck me. No wonder. The devil doesn't want Mr. Manly educated any more than Mr. Manly want to be educated. Less actually. I'll have to talk to Mr. Manly about that tomorrow while I'm calling him to get his little buttocks into the chair.

Cindy, I'm sorry Jesse is sick.

Definitely!

I just asked Brandon to do something with the DVD remote, and he was like, "Where is it?" and then I remembered it was in my pocket It must be catching--one of the girls at Jukido brought a remote to class!

This wart is getting extremely painful to walk on. It is now projecting out of my foot instead of being flush with the pad, and it has gotten hard. I hope this means it's making progress, because I'm tired of hobbling!

Mr. Manly likes to get a hold of dh's cell phone. Then dh can't find it and he gets upset. The other day he was telling Mr. Manly to bring the phone immediately, but Mr. Manly couldn't remember what he did with it, so I called it. At least if you lose your phone, you can call it. Not so with a remote.

That never happens to dh. He charges it nightly. He is required, by his job, to have his cell phone charged at all times.
