My favorite was a few years ago when I went camping at Cape Disappointment State park on the Washington coast where the Columbia River empties into the ocean. It was just me and the dog camping. OK, the camping kinda stank because my tent was the only tent in an area surrounded by RV's and it was right near the entrance and the bathrooms were shared by all the daytime park visitors so they were downright disgusting (even for a campground), but other than that... The last night, I packed the dog and I up and got a room at the Holiday Inn in Astoria which is "under" the bridge and was AMAZING!

You have to wonder about a place called Cape Disappointment. I mean how do attract people to go there?

Tell me about it! It actually used to be called Fort Canby State Park, but they changed the name back to the original: Captain John Meares named this area that in 1788 after a failed sailing exploration. I guess he was the only person ever disappointed with this beautiful area!

Has anyone been on a cruise? Where did you go? Was it fun? Did you get sick? Was it crowded? Did you eat too much? Was there a lot of drinking and such?

My best vacation with the family was Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. I went with my family. It has the same latitude as Hawaii but your dollar goes much further (as long as you stay away from the tourist traps).

We swam with dolphins in Nueva Vallarta; went with my wife to a recreation of an Aztec wedding with a candlelit dinner after a beautiful boatride; swam in the ocean and was able to buy most of our souvenirs and food while laying on the beach.

I can hardly wait to go back!

I noticed that everyone vacations in the US, anyone else needed or will need a passport to travel?

We went to London for our honeymoon--that was the only time I have needed a passport.

1) yes
2) Puerto Rico, St Thomas, Bahamas
3) YES!
4) just once, but all I had to do is start walking and it went away. I think I was too hungry
5) not that I noticed.
6) well I think I gained 10 pounds
7) not that I noticed.

We went on a Royal Caribbean Cruise. The cabin was a nice size but boy the shower was small. We were gone 10 days. Larry insisted on getting up for breakfast "because we paid for it" but it was too early. The best day I had was when we slept in and jsut had brunch about 9, and stayed up for the midnight buffet. That was much better. I think if we ever go again he won't insist on getting up, neither one of us are morning people.

We'd order a dinner each and then one dinner just to try, we'd order something we'd never had before. I had shrimp cocktail every day. yum. I loved this one salad dressing so by the third day the bus boy would just bring it special for me. We sat at the table with the same people every day.

We went snorkeling one day and that was so much fun. I'm sort of afraid of the water because I can't swim but the salt water kept me up. I'd start to hyperventilate when my face got close to the water but once I did it I had a great time. one time I swam off to see something and Larry couldn't find me. We exercised every day, took dance lessons, and I can't remember what all. I do remember eating a lot. Larry told the guys at work they had to take me off the boat with a crane.

I've never been on a cruise, but everyone I know who's been on one always came back on cloud 9 so apparently they are fun!

Vacation isn't in our plans this year but I'll tell you about my favorite vacation spot.....The Outer Banks, NC

My grandparents used to take my sister and I there for 2 weeks every year. I LOVE the ocean and those were the best 2 weeks of the year for me. The last time we went was when I was 16. After that, my grandparents started going to Florida for the winter so no more summer vacations for my sister and I.

But.

Last summer I had the blessed opportunity to vacation with my sister and her family at the Outer Banks. It was THE absolute coolest thing to be there with her again. And having our kids there and showing them all the places we used to go and what used to be where and, and, and. It was just the best thing ever. I never thought I'd get to go back at all but to be able to do it with my sister was just too wonderful for words.

I LOVE the Outer Banks! We just got back from there last Sunday!! We were there in October, also - We fell in love with Hatteras Island!

Vacation Visitations and Variations for our Virtual Voguish Volley

Pick from the questions and discuss:

Are you planning a vacation this year? Where to? yes there is a group of us going to belgium this friday til next monday, and am going to the french alps in July

What has been your favorite vacation destination, and why? rome because it's where we got engaged

What was your worst vacation ever? not had any real bad vacations

Did your family go on vacations when you were growing up? Share your favorite funny or awful memories. Just me and my mum my dad used to drive us for 4 hours to north wales and then go back home because he didn't really like holidays as such

What makes a great vacation for a family? A couple? A single? a couple i think

What is your dream vacation destination? America

Share your vacation advice and stories.

Always make sure you have travel insurance and a place to stay where you are going! Google where you are going and find a couple of nice places to eat, sometimes you can get online discount tickets for certain things such as london zoo. Shop around for car hire if you are renting a vehicle. Always take more cash than you will need and have cards incase of emergancies. Last but not least make sure your other half doesn't place your passport somewhere you can't find so you end up having get an emergency one (this happened to me just before rome this year!).

On our honeymoon, we never had enough money. Our daily budget, set by my frugal (tightwad) husband, made eating very difficult! I remember always being so hungry.

We traveled to Oxford one day and stopped at a pub, and I remember eating the very best shepherds pie I have ever tasted. Finally a hot meal!

Oh my goodness! Where to begin?

I’ve cruised, and it’s just the best vacation ever! It’s hard to remember you even have a real life back home – total relaxation. So pretty much everything you’ve heard is true!

I’ve only cruised to Bermuda, and I highly recommend it. Hamilton (capital) is (or at least was, in 1989) very beautiful and quaint, and the color of the ocean surrounding Bermuda is stunning.

My family vacations growing up were pretty much always Ocean City, Maryland. I have good memories, of course, because of the family, but not because of Ocean City itself.

Earlier this month I visited my brother and his wife in Sugarloaf Key with my sister and niece. Sugarloaf Key is at the 17 mile marker from Key West. So that would be about 13 miles from Key West, I believe, since Key West is about 4 miles wide. We had absolutely perfect weather, and it was a gorgeous trip.

Of course, you’ve given me the perfect opportunity to include a link to my picture album for the trip, go here it is:

Hello Pam! I'm looking at your photos right now.

HEMINGWAY HOUSE!!! I'm so jealous. Did you see the famous cats?

Love the fat white cat entitled Savannah (was that in Savannah?). He's had a little too much fun, it looks like.

The water photos are so beautiful.

Thank you for sharing!

I've been to Ocean City, Maryland! I was only there for half a day, but I stopped at a tiny crab place with outside picnic tables and had all you can eat crabs...I still remember how yummy they were!

Hi Cranky - thanks. The cats, Savannah (the fat one) and Rebel (the climber), belong to my brother and sister-in-law who I visited in the Keys.

Yes, I saw the cats. My niece is the one who was crazy for them and even counted the toes (yes, they have six). My sister is getting married there later this year. Did you see the wedding courtyard/arch?

Thanks for taking the time to look through my photos - I'm pretty proud of them, especially the sunsets.

Going camping with the family on Memorial Day weekend in the Sequoias. August we're in Mexico again. Mexico City to visit relatives, then off to Cuernavaca and Purepero, Michoacan. Never been to either place and am looking forward to seeing village life with all the traditions. Plus the food! Yum!

I saw that photo. She's literally getting married there? How wonderful! That will be a great memory.

We are going on vacation soon, and I hope to take some beautiful pictures of my kids at the ocean. I just love the beauty of children playing with the huge ocean in the background.

Mapachito,

I've never been to the Sequoias or Mexico. Please post when you return and tell us about them!

Thanks! I'm especially proud of that one. Even my brother (who lives down there and is used to all the sunsets) saw that picture on my camera and said "That's the one."
