I got the latest issue of Rolling Stone in the mail the other day and noticed a tag at the top about new "breakout" bands. One of them was Flyleaf. I'd heard the song "I'm So Sick" on Rock Band, and saw that Wally World had the CD on sale, so I picked it up.
Only by reading the article inside the magazine did I learn that every member is a Christian, and it's obvious from the lyrics.
Any fans lurking?
I like the acoustic version of Cassie the best. The changes in the lyrics give it an entirely different meaning from the original.

I think they are great when they are rocking out, but their acoustic stuff. . . eh. Her voice was meant to rock only.

Rock Band calls them alternative.
I call them awesome and don't worry about it.

I think they are pretty good. The album is not bad for a first effort. I am looking forward to what they do next. I think more matured songwriting and better production values will do wonders for them.
The singer's voice (forgot her name) is kind of grating at times, but it fits pretty well with the music.
My favorite track is the last one. It's a duet with some guy. Great song!

They were the best new band of 2007. Lacey Mosley's got that growl that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. That girl's got grit. We need a second album.

I am a fan, I have not heard any of thier acoustic songs yet. I do look forward to there next cd. Not sure what direction they will go in. Anyone seen them live?

I like their music a lot myself. I am so glad that they're being played on mainstream radio stations---anything to get the message out!

None of the above. They're pretty much straight up modern rock. Not to say they sound like everyone else but if I had to categorize them that is where I would put them.
They definitely aren't like Evanescence (modern rock with the "symphonic", slightly dark touches), they're not metal like In This Moment (although the singer has the same ability to go from sweet to scream) and they aren't retro "Blondie" (like The Sounds). IOW: they don't fit into any of the cliches for female fronted bands.

Thats exactly what I think. I'd like to hear a little more variety as well. And some longer songs, the CD is so short. What I don't want to hear is them attempting any of the "traditional" female singer genres mentioned in the first paragraph.

I first heard them because my daughter likes them... and I asked, "Is this a Christian band?" And she said, I dunno..." I was pretty sure from the lyrics, but you never can be sure... Had meant to look into it, but forgot, so thanks for this thread.
It is rare for my dd and I to like the same band. And a Christian one at that. I have been trying to get her hooked on BarlowGirl.

It's been a while since I've visited here, and I'm glad there are so many fans.
"All Around Me" is a favorite.
As I mentioned (I think) I first got wind of them from the cover of my Rolling Stone - they called them one of the breakout bands of 2008. Along with Paramore. Which I also bought. Ugh! It's Fall Out Boy with a girl singing. Although she is better than that icky singer from FOB. "Miracle" is a fine song. The album gets better as it goes along. The middle few tracks are alrighty.
Someone mentioned not having heard Flyleaf's acoustic stuff. The version of the CD I bought is the rerelease of their debut with several acoustic songs and a DVD of three regular videos and all the acoustic songs.

Weird that Rolling Stone is just now recognizing Flyleaf; seems to me that they've been pretty well-known for quite a while already. I know I'd heard of Flyleaf LONG before I ever knew that Fall Out Boy existed! I like what I have heard but want to hear more.

Fall Out Boy released their first album in 2002 whereas Flyleaf's first release was in 2005 according to All Music Guide. Even if Flyleaf was around before that you would have to think Fall Out Boy was also. Besides, Rolling Stone isn't going to recognize you unless you have a CD out in most cases, they're not exactly champions of the underground.
Maybe you were way ahead of the curve on your Christian modern rock while ignoring radio friendly pop-punk.

Flyleaf is a good band. A few ministers in Texas who know them personally have also told us they have a real heart to reach this generation for Christ.
