Oh, I absolutely love studying with different translations at home. I just have a hard time following what's being said during the worship service on Sunday when the pastor is reading scripture from his Bible and I'm trying to follow along with different words. It's the OCD, I tell you.

But yeah, at home I study more than one and I absolutely love the online Bible through this site since there are a bunch of translations available to look at. It's very cool.

Somewhere in my collection I have a NT translation that give the English words, but keeps then in the Greek sentence structure. I need to find it.

Are you guys still talking about hi-liting books? I never used to hi-lite except for text books, but then when I was going through a lot of difficult stuff AND reading a lot of Christian non-fiction, I started hi-liting. Still don't hi-lite fiction, though. It wasn't until just about 5 years ago that I actually started hi-liting and writing in my bible. I always felt like I was defacing it, but then one day when I was looking at my aunt's bible, I realized to use it to it's fullest I needed to write down notes in the margins. I'm still learning how to properly study my bible.

...wish someone would tell me why they hi-lited my Scott O'Grady book, though. That was just mean.

My handwriting is so bad that any notes I make in the margins will soon be unreadable. And most Bibles use paper so thin the ink runs.

I found some pens especially designed for writing in bibles. I have yet to use them, though. But my aunt's bible is a real treasure. I was amazed one day when I opened it up and the notes in the margins spoke to my present situation. You just never know how God's gonna choose to speak.

My family was joking one time about how a brand new Bible somehow looks "less holy" because it looks like you don't use it. We decided that we could start a business to "age" Bibles so you could get a new Bible but still look like you are Holier than Thou...

I see a wide market for this.

We could do some in several colors of highlighters and others with notes written in ink to match the personality of the buyer.

Where do I buy stock?

I think you would make even more money if you sold Bibles that were re-written to express what the reader thought it should say.

Some people do, but I haven't found the book store that sells them yet.

I use several translations, along with a Bible Dictionary, theological dictionary, and a lexicon. I have a computer Bible and program, with Strong's numbering write in there Word for Word.

I am a firm believer that to understand what scripture is saying you need to know who it was written to, what was going on historically at that time, and stop thinking with our 21st century minds. We gotta regress to the 1st century Jewish way of thinking.

So many errors have been taught by people who read it literally as thought it were written today.

Example: I did not understand a lot about sewing and reaping and all the farming language until I actually had a vegetable garden. I really got the whole seed falling on bad ground thing.

Very very true.

OK guys. I have to go to bed, but first I have to clean up the mess left by the cable guy tonight. Long story, ask me later.

I quite agree with this. Context is so important.

In the neighborhood that GroupW and I have been posting lately this is a completely foreign concept.

This quote from that other thread will likely make you cringe as much I did when I read it. Note: the brackets are mine to make clear the context in which this was said.
quote:

So my point is, NEVER interpret scripture according to what happened during the [historical] times [when it was written]. Basically, you should take scripture as the Word of God and end it at that.

Yeah, it's some non-fiction that I know I'll want to reference later. I have a few Pagepoints but not enough and it's not like I could ever take them out so that's why I decided I needed to highlight.

Can you guys tell that I'm having a really hard time with this?
