When I was at the hospital with Chase the day before they discovered that he had RSV and bronchiolitis, the doctor that saw us said she never gives her kids cough syrups, she said "they don't work anyway" and then told us to give him Benedryl (not Benelyn), like Benedryl the allergy medication. She said it works by drying up their secretions so that they don't wake themselves up at night coughing and gagging and choking etc. We gave that to him one night and it seemed to work quite well. The only thing was that I kept him in his room, because it seems to make them drowsy and I didn't want him to be sleeping deeply and not be able to wake up if he was having trouble coughing or breathing. Hope that made sense

ORIGINAL: Georgia-Peach No, he definitely doesn't have the "bark" sounding cough. He had that one a couple of months ago in the middle of the night and scared me silly. I guess it sounds wet, like there is mucous trying to break up when he coughs. No, he is not wheezy. He is having to breath with his mouth open though because of his congestion. Sounds like he doesn't have an infection (at the moment), so all he perhaps needs is a paediatric over-the-counter medicine which contains some kind of expectorant (an expectorant is something that loosens tenacious bronchial mucus).

It acts as a cough suppressant. If Georgia-Peach's baby already has mucus there, it needs to be dispersed (which is why he is coughing) - and an expectorant will both loosen it and thin it down so that his body can get rid of it.

If you're not sure how much to give him or what kind your doctor recommends, call the doctor and ask them. They should tell you that without having you bring him in. They probably won't recommend meds, or give a dosing since everything for children under the age of 2 has been recalled and it's no longer recommended by the FDA.

We are giving Mary a little tummy time. Already at 11 days she is so strong with her lil head. She doesn't seem to mind it too much. She is a real grunter though; no matter what position she is in!

Yeah, I'm a little nervous about cold medicines for young children, too. But, it is worth a call. I doubt they'll call you in.

News Article on BPA I thought it was interesting that our government is going to try to regulate this...I will be interested in what Health Canada releases tomorrow. Is this as big of an issue in the US as it is here? UK or Australia? My neighbour went out and bought all glass baby bottles just recently. I was using Avent bottles and wasn't too concerned, but did a little research and switched to bottles with liners (which I now much prefer!). I still use my Avent bottles for pumping.

Go Chase!! Manda, that was terrible Yolanda- there was a big thing on the news the other night about cough medicines but Grace started carrying on so I didn't hear it. I have heard it all before, last yr it came up too and they said cough medicines really only cover the symptoms but don't get down to the cause or something, that it is just better to give them some panadol (tylenol) and put some vicks on them etc. If my kids are real bad I still give them some though, only at night, it just seems to give them some comfort. That barking type of cough is horrible, Grace had that last year I think, barking and wheezing, it was croup. Took Nath to the Paed, he said Nath does have reflux so he has also upped the meds a bit seeing as he has put on weight and has said it sounds like he is getting better with time and that soon enough once he starts getting more active it should all go and then I can tackle the sleep, or getting to sleep issue when he is older.

As far as the cold meds recall, it is my understanding that they were recalled for under 2 because people were not dosing appropriately, and yes, it can cover symptoms while not treating the issue. All of my kids have environmental and seasonal allergies though, and would be miserable a great deal longer if I did not use those things. My doctor agrees and has told me the appropriate dose whenever I have asked, without hesitation. Bottom line...if you're not sure, ask your doctor. But all of my kids have taken OTC cold and allergy meds for years with no negative effect.
