Question for you ladies who have watched other people's kids while having your own babies ...
My friend had her son in December and is returning to work in the summer. She's looking for part-time daycare for him starting in October (her mom's going to take care of the baby during her full-time training period). She would be working 2 - 3 evenings per week (either starting at 1:30 or 3:30 pm), and would need her son to be watched until 6:00 pm when her husband gets home from work. Our baby is due June 20. Do you think it's unreasonable to think that I could provide day care for her son for 3 - 5 hours, three days a week with our baby being - at the least - 3 months old? Her son would be 10 months old.
She is touring a daycare facility next week and needs to give them an answer shortly thereafter so that the position can be held for her son, so Brad and I need to make a decision on this quite soon! I was just looking for some advice from you ladies so that I can weigh it with our own decision making! Thanks so much!

I don't buy things too far ahead either, Hannah broke me of that one years ago. The girls wore the same clothes for FOUR YEARS...at 7yo she is just now in 4T. Jack seems to be following her lead. Jake and Emma were the opposite and they were out of the sizes by that age usually. Genetics are funny.

I bought Timmy's entire wardrobe from 0m-2T before he was born. There was a lady selling them on craigslist, and her baby was born in September. She said she made the mistake of buying her baby clothes too far in advance, so there many season appropriate clothes for a baby growing a faster rate than his age meeting his size and also for a baby growing so his age meets his size. It worked out perfectly for Timmy. The weather here is mild compared to the east coast or up north though.
One thing I did last summer was buy Timmy a bunch of short sleeved 3T tee-shirts. This winter he wore those same shirts with a long johns shirt underneath. It saved us money. You can't do that when they're babies though, but shirts will fit them that long when they're toddlers.

Kim can she just put his name down anyway and if you do end up watching him she can cancel it?
I wouldn't want to commit to something that far ahead when you don't even know what your baby is going to be like and you also don't know how well you will be sleeping etc etc you may need that time to be resting. That's my opinion anyway.

Definitely. Even with all our breastfeeding problems and stress I would have been ok watching another baby when Gabby was three months old. What a blessing for both of you!

FYI, in order to 'hold' a daycare spot, the parent usually has to begin paying for the spot right away-they don't just hang onto it until you are ready. Same as if you are on vacation or sick, you pay for the spot, not the actual care received.

I know I already made my feelings clear, but I feel like I need to expound.
Walkers are deadly. If Baby was meant to be mobile at that age (before cognitive function caught up...understanding of cause and effect, impulse control, etc), God would have made them mobile. It's like giving a gun to a five year old-they may want one, it may make them happy, but they don't have the sense to use it yet!
As parents, our job is not to make our kids happy or give them everything they want. Our job is to give them parameters and teach them how to function within them.

Kim - I would do it too!! The hours are great! You'd be able to get anything done in the morning -errand running and such, and then be home with the babies and making supper in the afternoon/evening.

Ok, besides falling down the stairs what is the big deal about walkers? We have an exersaucer because our apartment doesn't have enough room for a walker so it's not like I have one. Anyway, just wondering.

You can't watch your baby every second. And with a walker, you would be surprised the things they can reach that they couldn't before. And having leverage that they didn't have before-leverage to pull things down on top of themselves. Not to mention knocking into things if they get up any speed. Plus, as I said, they simply are not meant to be that mobile at that time. Why would you want to push them into something they aren't ready for, developmentally? I think that's very unwise.

I'm sorry, Jen, this made me laugh...having had all very early walkers (latest one was Levi at 10 months 2 days). My babies are ALL extremely mobile on their own before they have cause and effect understanding or impulse control. So yes, God does sometimes make them that way. 
You and me, both, Donna! Nathan took a few steps at 8 months, which was cute, but that only means he was tearing around the house a month later! 
I don't like walkers, either. I agree with you that stationary play centers are better, and there's evidence that walkers actually slow a baby's development. My parents certainly believe that it slowed my brother and I's development, but eventually we did learn to walk.

I have to say that I disagree that walkers are un-safe. I believe parents and environments are un-safe. My apartment is very small, and we also have a large toy preventing Jimmy from walking out of sight into Timmy's room. Timmy can crawl through a little door to get to his room. We don't use table cloths, and everything that could be considered dangerous to pull down is waaaay out of his and Timmy's reach. We don't have stairs. I thoroughly baby-proof my home for the stages that my children are in. It is actually safer for Jimmy to be in the kitchen in the walker than it is for him to be on the floor in the kitchen and risk picking up an unseen yucky thing and choking on it. If we had a much larger home, I might not have used a walker just because he'd be able to go out of sight, or maybe I'd use a baby gate.
It's the same thing with co-sleeping. Co-sleeping is unsafe if you're a drunk, but it's not if you are responsible about it. Walkers are unsafe if you don't properly supervise and if you don't arrange your home accordingly.
I've heard studies that walkers can delay actual walking, but they catch up. Timmy used one, and he can run and jump and kick a ball.

it teaches them the wrong way to be mobile...teaches them to use the muscles in the wrong way.
Also the seat is not the best position usually for their spine....when they are in the walking position that is. If they lean back then it can be more supportive, but in general it isn't. They shouldn't be in them very much cause it can cause some bad side affects to their spine over time.
we personally have a walker (although I much prefer the exersaucer that has toys and doesn't roll around)....got it in Germany...but we don't use it as a walker. We use it as a game for the baby....when they are old enough to hold themselves up (and pull up on furniture by themselves) then we use it to push them back and forth between the two of us. We don't really let them "walk" in it...but it's a fun game for them to be pushed around!!! Our last two loved doing that....although I am not sure we could do that here since we have carpet....in Germany we didn't have carpet...it was hard floors that were easy to push the walker around on.

I think that one of the problems with walkers is not so much that it means babies can move, but the speed at which they can move. 3 feet per second is the speed I've seen quoted for baby walkers - which is faster than mum or dad can move.
I personally prefer stationary play tables/activity centres. The child is still there with you, has things to do, is safely strapped in (without feet touching the ground), but without all the safety concerns.

Ruth, do you have links for the studies you read? I read one and delay was a whopping 4 days, lol.
Sarah, if the walker puts them in a bad postion does the exersaucer do the same thing? Gabby tends stand in hers while leaning forward more then she actually sits.

He just crawled normal for the first time the other day. He's going too fast for me. Timmy never crawled or even army crawled. He just pulled up when he was a year old and started walking a couple weeks later. Robert got Jimmy a cute Sesame Street walker last week, and he can just about get himself around on the carpet with it. He has fun in the kitchen though. Robert took the brakes off of it since the only place where there's no carpet is in the kitchen. It's so nice to have it. I put him in it in the kitchen with me when I'm cleaning and cooking, and he's happy the whole time because I'm with him. And, I don't have to worry about him eating a speck off the floor too!
They are banned here. I know he would love it though, so I might make a trip across the border to get one.
