I've searched for a Humus recipe that doesn't have Curry. I cannot even stand the smell of Curry powder. Do share your recipe. Today I didn't eat well at all. Also, I only did 2 1/2 miles of aerobic walking/ exercise today, too. Been slightly under the weather with a cold and body aches. Breakfast: Oatmeal (160) and coffee (34) Lunch: 1/2 Roast Beef sandwich (dry) on bread (200) Snack: Part of a small apple (60) Apple dump cake (200) Supper: Blackeyed Peas (180), boiled potatoes with margarine (140) Cokes: (300) 1274 calories Did you know you only burn 29 calories an hour while sitting at the computer, watching t.v. or talking on the phone? Current weight: 143 lbs (5'2") Goal: 124 lbs

Yeah, I know. The thing is that I have been dieting this way for over a year (with not being as faithful over the holidays and for a week or two of vacation) and have only lost 5 lbs. That fell off all in one month (Oct) and I can't figure out what I did differently then. In the summer, I had all sorts of medical tests b/c I thought my thyroid must be off after 6 months of dilligently eating right and in moderation... but there's nothing wrong with me at all. My thyroid tests fell smack in the middle of normal, no where close to being over or under active. For some of the time, I have thought there was some key I was missing, but I never have found it. I just try to be faithful to eat well as a way of life and trust that over time there will be some visible measure of success. It's just such a fight for me without much result, even over time... and most of the time I just accept that I don't lose weight like others... but today I'm feeling very frustrated.

If you have PCOS like me, you must eat less white products. That slows down my weight loss tremondously...too many whites (rice, bread, sugar etc). My thyroid was tested too and nothing found wrong. I though have to lower carb intake. But I still sometimes each bread products (mostly wheat now) but not a lot.

wow... 5lbs in 1 year! I can imagine your frustration....its perfectly normal to get mad so don't feel so bad.... and I find it hard to believe that there really is nothing wrong that is hindering you for making a bigger progress.....I am not a medical person so i wouldn't even know what to suggest... Anyways.. just wanted to let you know that I feel your pain and fully understand....

Thanks. I looked up PCOS, and I don't have any of the symptoms... I wouldn't even classify my problems with weight as weight gain... it's more trouble losing weight... and the one symptom they said is alway a part of PCOS is always normal and there on time. Thanks for the suggestion, though. I'd rather look honestly at something like that than just shrug off suggestions. I agree, Sherry, that something is wrong somewhere. I just can't figure out what it is and what was different in Oct. that caused me to lose at a "normal rate" for that month. I mean, it's not like I changed anything.

You might though be insulin resistant, have metabolic syndrome. Please do read this... Some people are genetically predisposed to insulin resistance. Acquired factors, such as excess body fat and physical inactivity, can elicit insulin resistance and the metabolic syndrome in these people. Most people with insulin resistance have abdominal obesity. The biologic mechanisms at the molecular level between insulin resistance and metabolic risk factors aren’t fully understood and appear to be complex. - American Heart Association Wiki on history of this Low-Carb diets combat Metabolic Syndrome This is pretty common.

Hmmmm.... this isn't really what I expected with the whole start-going-to-a-personal-trainer-thing. ; Anyway, about 40 minutes into things, I started having nausea, chest pains, turned really pale, got really clammy, and broke into a cold sweat. (And my blood sugar was fine.... I tested. Drat.) Soooooo..... to make a long story short, I ended up getting an EKG with my doctor informing me I was having irregular heartbeats and can't do ANYTHING more physical than walking until next week (Tuesday) -- which is the earliest he could schedule me for a cardiac stress treadmill test without admitting me to the hospital. That means no treadmill at home, no riding my bike around the neighborhood, no hand weights, and no recumbant bike .... and to head straight for the Emergency Room if the symptoms return. (This is my primary care physician, by the way, who did say that I looked fabulous with my weight loss.) (sigh) This isn't going as I planned.

I hope you are still doing OK today, Harvie. Can't wait to hear how things go on Tuesday. I just ate some "chocolate underground" flavored yogurt (Organic Fat free by Stonyfield Farm.) All I can say is WOW!

I know it was 170 calories for 6 oz. It had real sugar... not artificial. Oh, I have an idea. Here it is. It's not one of those things that fits easily into 1400 cals, but because I was good at breakfast and didn't snack the rest of the day it fit. I thought of an unrelated question for you. As you have lost weight, have you had to reevaluate your caloric intake?

Yes, as I've lost weight, I've had to reduce my calories. At my highest weight, I burned 2800 calories a day (sedentary lifestyle.) Now, 88 pounds lighter, I burn only 2380 calories a day. This means that my calorie deficit has been shrinking, since I don't want to reduce my calories below 1500.... or my metabolism would slow down. So, when I was burning 2800 calories a day, I ate 1800 calories a day (1000 calorie deficit.) Then, when I was down to 2700 ... I ate 1700. Then 2600/1600. Then 2500/1500. Since I'm sticking at 1500, my calorie deficit is now about 800 a day .... so my rate of weight loss has slowed (along with my metabolism.) It's generally accepted that adult women should never go below 1200 calories a day, and that a 1000 calorie per day DEFICIT is the maximum one should have, after factoring in exercise -- unless being supervised weekly by a doctor and having a BMI over 40. EEEK ... that chocolate yogurt has 37 carbs/34g of sugar, no wonder it tasted so deliciously chocolatey!!!!!! (Needless to say, being diabetic, I couldn't do that!) By comparison, a Snickers bar has only 28.8g of sugar, in case you were wondering! (and it's about double the sugar you'd find in a 1/2 cup of chocolate ice cream!)

Well, I'm still doing okay on my low carb diet, but the last couple days have been rough. Tonight I had 3 slices of pizza and some trail mix. Last night, I had some trail mix which put me over the allotted calorie and carb counts for both days. Now that I've had a couple of "cheat" days, I can go back on my eating plan knowing that eating lots of carbs causes cravings, so I still need to limit them in my diet.

That explains why it was so good!! Not a good daily choice for me, but it may make a good special treat instead of brownies. I'm not diabetic, although I try to eat more like one than your average person because odds are really high that I will develop Type II due to genetics.
