Harvie, the reason I don't use EV Coconut Oil is because of the flavor. I tend to eat savory and salty foods, not sweet ones and I find that the coconut oil fights with the savory foods. I ended up using mine as a moisturizer.

Ooooo ... how did it work??

I use EVOO as my moisturizer (and I infuse it with a few drops of jasmine essential oil).

It works well, but use it in moderation so you don't get oil spots on your clothing. I learned the hard way.

My wonderful DH uses hair conditioner as a moisturizer. Just wanted to mention that weird piece of trivia.

Well, I don't know if he was "sneaking it" per se ... but since I knew he didn't use my conditioner for his very short hair, it never occurred to me to ask if he was slathering handfuls of it all over his face!

I don't think my plan really belongs in the health and fitness thread, but oh well!

Mine, either! My idea of a helthy eating plan is getting orange sections or yogurt for my side dish at Wendy's instead of french fries.

I wonder about all the info I miss because "it never occurs to me to ask it."

LOL! Conditioner makes great shampoo and also great shaving cream as well. Just in case anyone was curious.

Coconut oil can stimulate the thyroid and lead to weight loss, so if that's something you're trying to avoid.......

So anyway, I cook with it and use it in my body butter and it's a great hot oil treatment for your hair.

I use coconut oil, olive oil, and real butter in cooking.

I've only just started using coconut oil ~ and have only used it for recipes that call for it so far. I bought virgin coconut oil. The cheaper kind (which I saw after I'd bought this) is refined and while it's ok to use on your skin isn't much good for cooking. I find a little goes a long way though

Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid (which helps speed up metabolism and may have an effect on underactive thyroid), antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal. I've used it on my skin for a recurrent fungal infection and it's really helped and on my ultra dry elbows (think sandpaper) and they're much softer now. I've also started to use it on my scalp to see if it helps my psoriosis.

I found my yogurt maker and bits last night and made the yogurt overnight so had my smoothie (juice of 1 orange and 1/2 a lemon) for breakfast (with a couple of stem ginger oat biscuits) and for lunch I had 2 slices of barley bread, toasted then spread with marmite, tomato and Cheddar cheese...

I really think Fritz needs to get a lip-licking smilie

Oh Aga - I thought I had mentioned this yesterday, but I didn't.

Yes, bulgar is a wheat.

Funny, I thought you mentioned it too

Do you have a simple recipe you care to post? Not sure I fancy going out today (it's cold and wet) but I think I'd quite like to try it sometime soon.

LOL! Well great minds even imagine alike.

A recipe for bulgar?

I've actually never done anything with it.

Fiddle.

I bought some Bob's Red Mill brand once and just followed the directions on the back of the package and also added flax seed. Used broth instead of water and added onions and spices. It was good. I have only fixed it once or twice, though.

I didn't know that it stimulated the thyroid.

Would it work to substitute either quinoa or bulgar for the rice in THIS RECIPE?

I want to try them but I want to start out with something I already know is yummy. I don't enjoy cooking so much that I want to take the chance on a failed experiment right now. Ya know?

I would think either would work with that recipe.

When my daugher (isaacsmom) had postpartum hyperthyroidism, she even had to stop using it as a moisturizer.

Lioness, that sounds really good! I'm thinking I'd like to try that with quinoa. I have only used quinoa to sub part of the flour in bread, but now I'm going to cook it like a grain.

Wonderful, thank you! Would I need to do anything different? Or would the amount of liquid and cooking time be right for those, too?

The things one learns in these threads! For instance, I just learned that isaccsmom is Mona's daughter! That is so cool!

Mmm-hmmm. Isaacsmom is my daughter, though her avatar isn't Isaac. That's my sweet Izzy.

Lioness, I haven't ever cooked quinoa like that--just ground it for flour--so you may want to look at the package directions and see what ratio of water/quinoa they suggest then modify the recipe if it looks like it would be too much or too little. May take a little experimentation.

I'm going to have to go to the health food store this weekend and pick up another bag of quinoa. And coconut flour.

My docs are trying very hard to maintain a healthy diet (they said I convicted them, so now they're actually going to practice what they preach to their patients) and I want to encourage them and help them find healthy alternatives. I make some banana muffins using coconut flour instead of wheat and I think I'll take in a batch Monday morning. I'll just need to remind them that coconut has like 52 grams of fiber per serving.......

Okay, I can do that. I'm pretty sure the organic section of my market will have it but there is a health food store in town where I know I can get it if need be.
