Does it matter if your house is a mixture of things? do you look at homes like that and think "gosh what was this woman on when she was decorating?"

garage sale chic!!!!

we haven't bought hardly anything that is our "style". Basically we bought the girls beds (bunk beds that can be separate twin beds...solid wood...very sturdy)...and that's about it. I am mentally going through our house, and I can't say that we have personally bought (new) another piece of furniture. Most of it was given to us or was dumpster finds. When we were in germany we didn't have hardly any furniture of our own...but people moving all the time meant that the dumpsters were always full of nice stuff with minor (or no) problems with it. So we have gathered most of our stuff from that. The other half is from people giving us things. One of my moms friends gave us a twin bed and frame and a queen mattress set...right before we left Germany a couple gave us a couch and love seat set (not in the color I would pick, but they are comfy). We bought a computer armoir that was meant for my moms house, so it was more her style, but it has ended up at our house now. I just try to make things look more cohesive by sticking to a set color. My philosophy is, if it doesn't look good paint it black. If it still doesn't look good cover it with some sort or fabric. If it still doesn't look good it belongs in the trash. LOL.

When we were first married we lived in a furnished apartment, then Paul's Sgt at the time offered to sell us almost everything in her apartment (furniture wise) for $500.
An older couple I know gave us her mothers gorgeous bedroom set - so with that we had a GREAT start.
Then my boss gave me his awesome table, a big tv and tv stand, and we gave away the table, tv and tv stand that the Sgt had sold to us.

We have bought a tall bookshelf and a short bookshelf and a marble topped bar type thing (that currently holds all our games!)

In our moves we've weeded out the furniture we don't *love* - and Paul feels strongly that if we don't love it, then it's not coming into our house. I agree with him. So our new house will have some emptiness to it until the 'perfect' items come along at affordable prices - like Kim, we aren't going to blow our budget to decorate our house. But we also don't want stuff in our home that we don't like.

Dave and I started out in a furnished, 400 sq ft, cottage that was staff housing at the resort where we worked.

When we bought our 1st house, we had nothing but lawn chair pads to sleep on!! The house was empty, but we were so excited to have our 1st home, we slept there anyway. We had saved & saved our 1st year, so when we moved we were able to get a dining room set, living room set & bedroom set that we loved. The other 2 bedrooms and the den were furnished slowly by hand-me-downs, second hand sales, and roadside freebies. That is what makes a house a home!

When we moved, we felt so honored to be able to bless other family's with our old livingroom & den furniture, the boys old beds, the queen bed in the guest room and various other accent pieces we had acquired . I kept our bed, dining room set & the nursery furniture and besides passing on the crib, we won't be parting with any of those pieces, in fact, the more used they are, the more beautiful they become in our eyes because we see memories, not scratches.

We are pretty much repeating the process here, adding a few new pieces and filling in with pre-loved goodies. We have a long way to go, and I keep a wishlist to keep me on track with priorities. Right now I am working on house plants, I buy one a week when I go grocery shopping.

Sarah, I love your decorating philosophy.

Jessica, I can't believe you are already 17 weeks, that is crazy! On this end it seems like its flying by, but I know for you probably not so much.

Sarah, that philosophy made me laugh, but its a good one!

Today we have a guy coming out to give us an estimate on redoing our siding. We were blessed with some money from my in-laws that will allow us to do this without having to go into debt. It really was getting to the point where we had to do it one way or another. The siding we have now is the kind that you have repaint ever few years and it has a few spots that starting to rot. We are going to have it replaced with vinyl siding so that it last and all you have to do is pressure wash it once a year or so. We are hoping for a decent estimate today, but it needs to be done. I am excited because the house will look totally different with new siding in a new color, can't wait.

Oh yay! I'm so glad someone revived this thread. I love looking into other homes to see how they decorated! Here is my humble abode.

I love the bin style drawer pulls, I would have put them in my old kitchen if we hadn't moved. And I am finally realizing that our new home isn't really all that much french country, especially since I recovered my dining chairs, but we will always have the pretty scalloped, antique white dining set and my rooster even if we have relocated to a more "tuscan" decor.

I look forward to your decorating updates, your home is beautiful. It is so smart of you all to be patient and only do what you can as you can. Not just for biblical financial reasons, but you have so much more appreciation for what you work for, kwim?

Yes...definitely a fellow frenchie! I was actually going to recover our dining chairs with the same toile but Walmart didn't have the same kind when I went back. LOL!

Thank you for the compliment on our home! We really do appreciate the things that we're able to buy and fix up, when we can because that means that we don't own anyone or any bank for our things! We sometimes put big purchases on credit if it gets us a deal for said 'thing' but then we come home and pay it off that day (or shortly thereafter!).

Hannah's bedding set is pink toile! I fell in love with it when I was pg with her and it was our one splurge from Babies R' Us. I know we spent too much on it...but it was for our first child! How could I not?! Especially since all her furniture ended up being from Walmart?

Becky you have a very lovely home! Your credenza and bed are fabulous! Oh, and I love your hall tree (bench)! We've got a place that I've got 'reserved' for one of those in our house...now if we only could buy one, lol!

Yes...that's definitely how we feel! I won't go and just buy a bunch of stuff that we might be able to afford but is made, say cheaply (*read falls apart in 2-3 years*) just to fill up our house. If we can't afford something nice and we're able to get away without it, then that's just what we'll do.

Thanks! We got our hall bench at Target a couple years ago. When we moved in our house, that wall was always bear and we didn't know what to do with it until we found the bench.

The credenza was my husband's grandmothers. He always thought it was a piece of junk till I made it look nice for our home!

The bed was given to us by my best friend. We have been so blessed by our family members and friends who give us stuff for our home. I'm always willing to take cast offs! We have only bought two items of furniture in the 5 years we've been married. The hall bench being one of them.

We got our 'formal dining table' (it used to just be our regular dining table until we moved into this house, lol) from Joel's mom about 7 years ago, it's the one we just redid the chairs to. It is such a blessing when family comes along and just gives you stuff that they know you need and will appreciate!

This has gotten me thinking of our first home and the transformation some of our things, not to mention our family, have gone through.

I found a few pics of our old home that shows how different everything looked then. It really demonstrates the power of color and fabric!! Have fun looking, I did!

HERE is my same dining set with different seats and in a totally different decor.

HERE is our bed with my beloved toile... and HERE it is with our new bedding.

Isn't it cool how different things can look? I just had to add pics of our first living room set to show how recovering the ottoman totally changed that.

Original upholstery

recovered

And this was my old kitchen, nice and bright! PIC

Thank-you! I love it too. My mom and I found it buried in the back of a furniture warehouse ding & dent sale. I've always wanted a pretty chair in my bedroom...I don't even pile laundry on it it's so nice to have!

hhhmmm kangaroos, alligators, kangaroos, alligators.... I think i will stick with the roos
Your house is lovely though, i really love everything in it. I saw a little trinket box today in target and thought, Jen would have something like that, so next week i will treat myself and buy it, replace this dodgy bowl we have in the kitchen for all our loose change keys etc...
I am also planning on getting some storage containters to tidy up the open shelving thing my hubby constructed from an old wardrobe to tidy the dining area a little until we can afford a new kitchen.
BUT before that, I still have new sheets, lamps and cushions for my bed to get off lay-by

In the kitchen (which I have not started on yet) I am going to paint the cabinets white, the lower wall (below the chair rail, on the paneling) white, and the upper walls a coffee type color....kind of the color of coffee with cream in it.
In the bathroom (which I have to finish the trim in now...taking a break first) I got a milk chocolate color. WOW does it look nice!!!! I found a shower curtain that has the same colors as our bedroom stuff and it looks awesome with the brown walls!!!! I will have to finish painting today so that tomorrow I can put everything pretty up and take pics!!!! I still have to paint out all the trim in white, but I am not going to do that part til Paul takes down a weird cabinet on the wall...it's not very deep at all...barely deep enough for a can of shaving cream...so we re going to put in something better and more functioning then that. I can't finish painting fully until he does that.

CUTE finds Nicole!!!!!

I thought for some reason you had a red and black theme in your kitchen? or is that just because you collect coke things that I have that image. Your colours sound exactly like what hubby wants. Except I think we are having the colours you are having in your kitchen in our lounge and hallways. Aren't bathroom cupboards weird?! We have one too that is on our wall (which doesn't even match the vanity cupboard ) and it is not very good for keeping things in either. We really need more room in ours.

Thanks I was proud of my buy, luckily Target and this other store had clearance racks :)

I do have that theme....but if I paint the walls red then nothing else will be seen on them. So I am painting them a coffee with cream color so that you will be able to see the black and red accents. My whole house could pretty much be red and black accents and I would be happy....lol.
