I'm pretty sure it's different than a garden tub.

But then I'm sure they are similar in that neither one is in a garden.

In what context? I guess I'm not familiar with the term.

I'm assuming the question is along the lines of "What is a ranch home?" only it is "What is a garden home?"

We know that they are not all on ranches.

Well, in the South, a garden home is one that is small (usually under 1,000 square feet) and has a VERY small yard and no garage or carport.

Because of the small yard does that mean the garden comes inside - thus the name?

I don't know. Our city accepted an ordinance change in one neighborhood to allow "garden homes." I tried to look up the phrase, but couldn't find it anywhere.

My understanding is it's an apartment or townhouse with a ground-level walkout into a private terrace. I could be wrong though.

Maybe they are garden condos: "Units in a low-rise complex that include a substantial amount of open, usually landscaped ground."

If they are individual homes they could still follow that definition: A home "that includes a substantial amount of open, usually landscaped ground."

A house (of any size, really-- some are quite large) that takes up most of the lot it's built on, which makes it butt up really close to neighboring houses and leaves very little yard to care for. They're also called "patio homes." It doesn't share walls with neighbors-- that would make it a townhouse.

As far as your city, stella, several in Versailles were built that way, as well as many of the new ones out at the Greenways. Also the one my grandparents just moved into out near Quail Creek is a garden home, even though it has a 3-car garage.

In my city a "garden home" is a house built on a concrete slab- the size of home or yard don't figure into the defination. There is no basement, no "foundation," no crawl space, no stilts, etc. They can be multiple stories.

A garden home is luxurious, well furnished wih only the best and most expensive items. They are surrounded by a Country Club where the owner of the Garden Home can also play golf, use the country club's other buidlings to entertain. Most of them begin with a price of at least $200,000.00 and go up depending on the location within the clubs property.
There are also country homes in England that define a flower garden(Rose gardens) and is called exactly that..garden home. They too are expensive.
I did a search because I wasn't real sure the exact definition either.

I feel like we are playing that board game where everyone gives different definitions and then you have to guess which one is correct (Balderdash?!?).

I always thought it was a cottage with a large lot for a garden! Where the garden is emphasized as much as the house... The only info I could find that had a definition said it was a home built right against the property line, with few windows/doors on that wall as a privacy screen.

I was surprised there was no real definition anywhere on the web...

Most garden homes in our area are those that are built on tracks of land (smallish subdivisions), pretty close together on a slab, with a driveway and a small patio in the back.

They are usually marketed as starter homes.

Course...that's 'round here.

I feel the same way! There is no consensus at all.

I looked all over the web for my defination, too, and found zip!

You could probably call any local realtor and they'd give you a definition or check the local realtor website to see what the definition in your area might be.

But just think of the opportunity! You call them and ask about Garden homes in the area and when they say they don't know what a Garden Home is you can tell them whatever you want!
