Welcome to everyone, new and old!!!

I forgot to "introduce" myself.....sorry for all y'all who already know us......
My hubby joined the Army back in 1997, then met me when he was in AIT and we were married in 1998. He had a few contract problems when he tried to re-up (something his recruiter failed to do) so he ended up having to get out and go National Guard. Due to his units and other issues, it took three and a half years to get it worked out and him get back into active duty again. It was a HUGE pain with several states involved, several senators and congressmen, and a whole lot of brass trying to figure it all out. Basically at the end it came down to a miracle (12 hour window) that God opened up for him to be able to get back into active duty. So now we are back in active duty, and on our second base since then.
His MOS used to be 63-T but when he went back to MEPS when getting back in they had done away with his MOS (consolidated it with others) so now he is a 63-M (mechanic...Bradley is his speciality).

(edited to add more cause I wasn't done when the cat jumped up and hit the enter button on my post)

Hubby/we has been all over the world....including such wonderful countries as...Korea, Germany, Kuwait, Iraq, and visited a few European countries when we lived in Germany.
We have four kids so far...#5 is due in June. Our oldest was born in Ft Hood, TX. Our second was born in Tn, Our third was born in germany, Our fourth was born while hubby was deployed and I was staying at my moms in Tx. This one will (hopefully) be born here in OK where we are currently stationed.

Right now he is in a non-deployable unit, so that is a plus for us!!!! (It's a training base, Basic, and he got lucky enough to be a support mechanic for one of the training units). We moved here back in May of last year....hubby was here before us though, all alone til we got a house. A year ago right now we were packing up in Germany getting ready to come back to the states...WOW...been quite a year!!!

For those of you following the Sgt Meanie saga of our lives....and just in case you missed the announcement that I made somewhere....when we got back from leave for Christmas he called to find out what time formation was and was told that he was no longer in that unit, he had been moved back to wheels and away from Sgt Meanie!!!! (for those not up to date, this was a sgt that had it in for my hubby...tried three or four times to get him kicked out simply because he was drumming up things because he didn't like him...why didn't he like him? well simple...because my hubby is a Christian and this guy is celtic in his beliefs...so he hated my hubby.)

Do your units give birthdays off? I know each unit is different. about 50% of Honey's have given the time off no questions asked- some of them even harassing him if he DID show up. Of the other 50% some would allow you to take leave and not give you trouble and the others treated like any other workday.

This unit is a take it or leave it unit. So Honey TOOK IT! He had a 3 day weekend and his boss actually did not CALL!!! he is gonna get 2 three day weekends in a row! MLK day next monday.

Do your units give birthdays off?

some have, some haven't...the ones that have it depended on how much work they had backed up to do. One unit he was in was constantly running about 10% of their vehicles...they were always working late and getting griped at for not having enough work done...there were a lot of smokers and newby's that really didn't care to work, so they stood around all day at the fence smoking. Now the unit Paul is in is so far ahead that they are servicing vehicles for February now...so that is a welcome change. They get off on time every day. His birthday is next month, so we shall see then if he gets off or at least gets off early for it.

MLK day next monday.

WOOHOOOOOO!!!!!
so question...kind of like Ez's question.....
what days are your four day weekends usually?
every other base we have been to it was typically friday and monday...but here, every one of them has been monday and tuesday.Weird...hard to get used to that schedule.

4 day weekends? It has been ages since they gave a full 4 days. Jerry being who he is now is the one telling the soldiers to go home at 2pm on the Friday before a 3 day weekend. He then gets to stay and "Man the phones". He does this because someone usually did it for him back in the day so I don't mind it.

He did get a treat back at Christmas. His bosses boss called and told them that the Friday prior to New Years was being declared a training holiday. They had already given through wed the 26th off. So Honey approached his boss and asked if he stayed with the phones that thursday if the others could come in and be released at lunch. His boss said that'd be fine- let them go early. Honey put out the email to everyone in the office and got several phone calls asking if someone was playing a joke. NOPE. the big boss man was giving a nice christmas present. Honey set up a skeleton group to come in the one day as the orders said Ness. staff members. Then cut um loose. They skeleton staff showed up that thursday and they when through their morning stuff- ZERO phone calls, work was caught up- So he had sent everyone home by 11am and came home himself at 2pm.

I am liking this command.

he is basically working Boards- Personnel stuff. Some days he comes home and his brains are fried. The bosses Boss told him that he was being brought in to "Clean house" cause they knew he was a man of integrity and would do it that way the book said to do it. He had done the job as a worker bee in the DC area and liked it. Here he is #2 and catching a lot of heat from the "Good Ol Boy" club. he has had more than 6 IG complaints filed against him (All unfounded and dismissed) in the first 6-7 months on the Job. Folks are finding that being so and so's uncles cousins best buddy doesn't = being promoted before someone that is more qualified. It is hurting some folks BAD.

Hi ladies! I am not a "military wife" but I am in the military (Navy - 12 years) I was wondering if anyone has read the book "Hope for the Homefront" by Marshéle Carter Waddell ? My small group is going to be using this book as our topic and I was hoping to get some reviews. I am nervous about being in this group to begin with because it will be composed of "military wives", which I am not. I already told my friend that is leading the group that I would do it, but I am still nervous. She said that it would be great for me to be in there to get something like an insiders view point of what their husband is going through.

My DH's birthday is in July ... and last July he was stationed in Iraq (and did not get the day off!) The year before that he was TDY to Tucson (and did not get the day off!) The year prior to that he was TDY to Bogota, Colombia (and didn't get the day off.) And, the year before that (2003) he was training in Texas (and did not get the day off.)

I have not read the book "Hope for the Homefront."

Did everyone get a raise on today's pay?

I am pretty sure we did...hard to tell without waiting til the next LES comes out...we were having some issues with his pay anyway and that got straightened out last month, so this is the first month of that being right, so it's hard to say for sure that he got a raise...but I think he did.

Are y'all going to the tax center on base to file, or do you do it yourself or go somewhere else?
We always go with the cheap (FREE) tax center option whenever we can.

It depends. We need to do an adjustment for last year, we couldn't include Wes, he didn't have his ss#. So if we can do that with whatever free pregram militaryonescource is offering, then we'll do that. If not, we'll do to the on-post tax center.

I wanted to pass this along. My friend has a friend who makes these for kids of deployed military. They aren't too expensive, when you think about shipping and the work involved. I'm getting one for each of my kids. Isaiah will be 2 when Justin gets home!

Sandy.....one thing Paul did was buy the kids each small stuffed toys before he left
When he was gone and we went anywhere we took pictures of their toys doing whatever it is we did...then we would share those pics with Paul...he loved that...lol. He also got to see how big they had grown while he was gone...because their toy didn't grow.

I'm not a military wife--yet;). But my boyfriend is a U.S. Navy Corpsman and spent 7 months in Iraq. Actually I met him while he was in Iraq...I was supporting the troops, writing letters, sending packages, etc. I've been doing this almost 3 yrs now and I randomly picked his name out of over 3000 contacts on a support site one day. He answered back and started emailing me everday, we had a lot in common and he asked one day if it would be ok if he called me...I was like sure, why not? Well he called me from then on almost every day after that, sometimes it would be midnight-1 a.m. over there. It was just a few months afterward that he told me he really liked me and he would like to go out with me when he got home. So he drove 6 hrs to come visit one weekend and that was all it took for us...we were completely crazy about each other. We've been dating ever since and believe God meant for us to be together.
Other than my Sailor, my daddy is a Navy Vietnam Vet, 5 uncles in Vietnam War, grandad in WW2, all of my great-uncles in WW2, one an Army Ranger who had a Purple Heart, one a POW of Japanese. And last but certainly not least, my brother the one and only Jarhead--OORAH! in the family.
God bless all you military wives...I know it's not an easy job, you are in our prayers!

HI His Princess!!!! Welcome...to the thread and the forums!!!

my hubby and I met through letters that way too...he was in AIT though, not Iraq. His friend noticed that he didn't ever get any mail from friends or family, so he asked his wife if she had a friend...I was that friend!!! We started writing in September, met the day after Thanksgiving (he was invited to my friends house for the holiday) and we were married the next June!!!

that's a good line of questions....
How did you meet your soldier?
If married, did you marry before he joined or after?

my soldier and I met in high school...LOL We've been together for 10 years this year! Married for 7.
We married before he joined the Air Force (for the new people, my hubby is Army now, but he was AF for 6 years). Like literally, he came home one day, announced that he had joined the AF and was leaving in 2 months and we got married 10 days before he left.

Hi everyone, I'm a lurker!

There were army people in my family but we're talking long time ago (WW1 and WW2). My family has been greatly affected by war, as my dad was born in a German occupied country during WW2, and he came here with his parents when the war ended and their town had pretty much been ruined. While military life is not something we would become involved in, it is something we respect.

How did you meet your soldier?

  • We met in highschool.
  • I have known him since 1985.
  • Our first REAL date(not just hanging out in the parking lot with pals) was July 16 1987.
  • The wedding dress was ordered the first week of December 1987.
  • He signed up Delayed entry on his 18th birthday- January 14, 1988.
  • We were married July 16 1988.
  • he left for basic September 13th 1988.

If married, did you marry before he joined or after?

Both? He SIGNED UP prior to our marriage but did not leave til after. I KNEW he was going into the service before we married, I was involved in the choice. I said *NO* to the Navy & Marine Corps as I knew that they'd both keep him gone a lot. Being a Navy Brat I knew I did not want that lifestyle- I knew I was high maint. and could not deal with him being gone on ship for months at a time.

What he looked like when we met.<--- that's 10th grade folks!

A wedding photo <---just 1.5 months after we graduated High School

April 3, 2007 (for his promotion packet)

A bad photo of my grade 11 yearbook photo HERE<-- just so you can see geeky me too. Jerry and I were good friends at this point. Made my then boyfriend quite mad. My best friend was a GUY and a redneck hillbilly guy at that--- the fact that he was too cute in his NJROTC Uni (Grade 11) didn't help matters AT ALL.

Postal Service offers first-time military discount

WASHINGTON, DC (AFPN) -- Planning to send a care package to a military service member serving abroad? Send it after March 3 to take advantage of a new flat-rate box from the Postal Service that is 50 percent larger and delivered for $10.95 to an APO/FPO address -- $2 less than for domestic destinations.

"This is the first time the Postal Service has offered a special price for our armed forces serving overseas," said Postmaster Gen. John Potter. "We're proud that family and friends will be able to use this new larger-sized box to send much appreciated packages from home to our dedicated troops overseas."

The new priority mail large flat-rate box (12" x 12" x 5-1/2" or 800 cubic inches) will be available in post offices nationwide beginning March 3, but customers can begin ordering them Feb. 20 at usps.com/supplies or by calling 800-610-8734. Some of the new boxes are co-branded with the logo of "America Supports You," which is a Department of Defense program that connects citizens offering support to the military and their families.

"It's terrific that the Postal Service continues to think of ways to help Americans support our troops and their families. Postage is always a concern when shipping care packages, and this new flat-rate box means our home front groups and supportive citizens can do more with their resources," said Allison Barber, the deputy assistant secretary of Defense. "We're especially pleased that some of the boxes will bear the America Supports You logo reminding our service members that they have our nation's support."

The $2 discount is applied when the priority mail large flat-rate box es are shipped to an APO/FPO destination. The two existing flat-rate boxes (11-7/8" x 3-3/8" x 13-5/8" and 11" x 8-1/2" x 5-1/2"), which currently retail for $8.95 for U.S. addresses, are not available for the military discount. All flat-rate boxes can be used for international shipping.

The new flat-rate boxes will be available in Post Offices starting March 3. The America Supports You branded box will be available online, at select post offices near military bases, or by calling 800-610-8734.

For more information, please visit usps.com.

My Honey went back on the "list" in Jan. He got the "call" yesterday. At present the boot in the sand date is sometime in Sept. he goes over 20 in Sept. If his actual Deploy date is after the 13th of Sept he will have passed his 20 year mark.

Not sure yet Donna. He says physical therepy is helping him. He has an appt on the 11th of march with his doctor and the back guru. He'll get the official word then.
My guess is, since pt is helping...he'll have to go and have the surgery when he gets back.

praying Ez and Sandy

I was going to bring this one up a few days ago, and I never did....but here is what I wanted to post.
Paul has had knee pain for years now...complaining about it has done nothing (I remember him complaining to dr's about it way back at Ft Hood which is where our first was born, so it's been a long time coming). Anyway, a few weeks ago he finally got to a military dr that didn't say the same "stretch better"....and they found that it's not anything they can do anything about, so they have referred him out into the civilian world. Today he has an MRI on his knees to see if it's soft tissue damage (probably is....it started after basic and after having to run those numerous miles on cement instead of a proper running track). He is on a 60 day profile right now.....and starts PT this week (friday I think) to see what they say about it. This dr seems great so far. He promised him that he will NOT overlook things like he has been dealing with for years now.

I dug this back out of the files so I could say something to you ladies.

Thank you for supporting you husbands!!!! Maybe it is because I have been out of the country for the past couple of years, but this weekend, I have been reminded of how important the military is and the people that are in it. But without all of you ladies supporting your husbands, staying back when they are deployed, traveling all over the world with them (and this one is especially important for me as I have been living overseas the past two years and realize the importance of having military personal stationed around the world)... there wouldn't be a military to protect American lives and stand for what is right.

So on this Memorial Day, I say thank you to those that protect me in the military and also their wives who support those men!!! Thanks!!!

AT= Annual Training... that "two weeks" a year in the National Guard lingo when they say 1 weekend a month & 2 weeks a year.

You know Honey has been told he is going to iraq. he is going with a unit that he is not currently attached to. He will be attached to said unit July 1st as that is when they will start their active make things "really" start to happening.

Honey is FULL TIME-ACTIVE DUTY army national guard. meaning he currently works 5 days a week as CWO3 Honey+ the 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks a year. his weekend+2week a month job is the same as his 5 day a week job. he does not get any extra kudo's or pay for the weekend and 2 weeks. It is expected. No biggie Uncle Sam owns him right?

The unit Honey is currently with does AT in JUNE this year.
The Unit Honey is going to does AT in JULY this year.

Guess who gets to do AT TWICE?

LOL! Some folks said- "Well at least you get the summer with him before he goes." uh huh add up the two separate AT's and there goes 4 weeks of it. I am getting in the mindset that you are no longer my own- and that if schedules were ever fluid and dependent upon uncle sam's mood--- now is def that time.
