Well that's a load of horse manure. What are they going to do? Arrest every woman who has a baby in the back seat of a car? That's all we need is more regulation! How can they make that law? I mean come on! Don't they read the stats about other industrialized countries who use midwives and homebirths? All of this hospitalization hasn't made our fetal/maternal death rate any better. Think people!

I just watched the BOBB I LOVED IT!!!! That is terrifying to me that they are proposing a mandate like that. How does something like that pass? How can we prevent it?

we can prevent it by lobbying against it and informing grassroots homebirth/midwife groups to unite against it. We do it be being women...and standing up for OUR right to give birth when and where and how we want (whether that be in a hospital, in our home or under the old oak tree in Grandma's back yard.....)


Brandy...

the best way to avoid a pit induce c-section is to walk walk walk after they apply the cervix medication..and IF they let you go home....have sex. It won't be "fun"...but it will help speed things along. While sex in and of itself does not cause labor...the hormones in the semen are similar to the cervix meds and will increase the dosage so to speak.

AND...after they start the pit.. (if they have to)...keep walking..even though it will be around in circles since you will be attached to an IV pole.....ask for a rocking chair and rock..that helps move things along too.

and pray...I know I will be praying for you. Even though Pitocin increases the risk of c-section...it does NOT guarantee that you will have one. MOST women who are pit induced do NOT end up having c-sections. Make sure that hubby is willing to put down his foot..that as long as the baby and you are not showing signs of stress (cardiac stress that is)....let it wait.

Brandy, are you convinced that the induction would be best for your health and the baby's or is it just the policy of your caregivers with vague threats and stats being thrown around to scare you?

If I was sure that an induction was definately necessary I would say "Bring it on!" and have no regrets even if it did end in a c-section.
Do you want encouragement to refuse induction, or wait a few more days? I can tell you my stories but don't want to do that if it would end up making you feel bad or something. [&o]

If you are going ahead with induction, take WOF's advice. Stay on your feet as much as possible. Disappear into the bathroom if they won't leave you in peace. [:D] Remember that they are working for you, and be very vocal about what you will and won't do. Remember that their convenience (you being in bed and on your back) is not top priority, and if you need to squat, do jumping jacks, or stand on your head in order to work through contractions, that's what you need to do.[;)] They can listen to the baby just fine if you are on your hands and knees or standing up.

I skimmed the thread, but couldn't find what I was looking for [&o]....did we already talk about motivations for natural birth?

The typical smackdown is "Oh, you're just looking for "an experience" and don't care about health or safety, shame on you selfish woman".

Honestly, if "the experience" were so important to me, I wouldn't have stuck with my midwives when I was told I couldn't use the birthing center. The other hospital in this town has much nicer labor and delivery ward (so I'm told--I recieved rave reviews from a lady who loved her experience there, dim lights, worship music, and a prompt epidural), but I wanted midwives and at least a chance at natural birth. So I got the bright lights, beeping machine, and horribly uncomfortable labor/delivery bed as my "experience". [8|] And I knew that was likely as I reached the end of my pregnancy and the baby got big.

Top of my list for why I want natural births: I believe that when baby and I are both healthy and there are no complications, natural birth is the best way for us both to *stay* healthy. [:D]

I think when people talk about an "experience" people hear different things. Some of the books really almost make it sound like you should hear angels singing when you deliver. I loved my home births, and I had a postive experience with each of them, but every one of them still involved pain. Since I've had experience with home births, birthing center births, and hospital births, I feel I have a pretty good handle on what each of them is like.

The "experience" isn't like some kind of high. For me, it's about having more positive memories of the event than negative ones.

My motivation was almost strictly medical. Because I had had a c-section (while NOT in labor, mind you) they were adamant that I have another. I knew it was not necessary and that c-sections are much riskier than vaginal births, and I found that birthing at home and without intervention as far as possible, was the best way to avoid another c-section.

However, it became something much more to me in the process.

I am resurrecting this thread.

What sort of foods should I have around to eat while in labor?

And what sort of positive sayings or scriptures would be good to have around the house to see, not just for labor, but leading up to it?

A variety, because you don't know what you will want/need until the time comes. Relatively easy to eat and digest is good, though.

Good praise music is also a good idea, and I also had jazz.

Jenny-Fair, you were able to have a vbac? I'm in the same position you were in. After one c-section I think my best option will be a hbac. I'm not pregnant and don't want to get pregnant until I figure out what I can do to avoid a rcs.

What was the reason for your original c-section, and what kind of incision did they make?

I had low amniotic fluid and was told at my appointment at 40 wks 6 days that I was a likely c-section. I kick myself everyday for going along with it but hindsight I guess.

I also wasn't dilated or effaced and baby wasn't engaged. I wonder if I should have tried natural induction methods and waited it out. I've now read that it's common for amniotic fluid to be low as you reach your due date and isn't immediate cause for concern. I've also now learned that the c-section rate in the area I live is higher than the national average. This came from a midwife and could be incorrect but I don't doubt it after my birth experience.

I think I was a scheduled c-section although in my medical records it shows that baby was in distress. Sorry, I could talk forever about this. I'm trying to find as much information as possible so I have good odds for a vbac. So far I've switched to a dr 2 hours away who is vbac friendly. It's a start :).

How were you able to overcome the reasons for your first c-section when trying for and successfully having a hbac? Congratulations by the way :)

I had a lot of food around the house to eat. I had dried fruit, almonds, chocolate pudding, apple sauce, and a lot of other things I don't remember now. My labor was so intense I didn't eat anything. My midwife made me take a sip of Smart Water between contractions and at one point I got really shaky and dizzy so she made me eat a small spoonful of honey.

So should I have something like gatorade for labor, even though I never drink the stuff? Or would a huge pitcher of my pregnancy tea (rrl, nettles, alfalfa, peppermint) sweetened with honey be good to sip along with water?

Chocolate pudding, now that sounds good!

Did you have any food for the midwife and your helpers at all ladies? I'm sure they'll take care of themselves, but I don't want them to have to run out to get something. We are at least 20 mins from the nearest fast food.

I just had what I would normally have on hand. I don't remember buying anything extra. I remember the midwives making me a sandwich and trying to convince me to eat something, but I didn't want any. A couple of time we went out to eat while I was in labor. [:D] That's always interesting.

Kathryn- I would have stuff that you don't mind seeing again...if you know what I mean... I would think Italian Ice would be good since it would help with hydration, have some taste and calories, but also not be too rough on the stomach. Soft, cold things would be what appeals to me most... Crunchy would be very bad...

I made some trail mix (dried fruit, pretzels, peanuts, and chocolate chips) for the midwives (and my husband, mom, and sister) but I don't think anyone ate it. My mom says one of the midwives was munching on baby carrots the whole time she was here after David was born, but I don't remember that.

The primary midwife got to my house around 8:00 and I was dilated to 9 cm already. The secondary midwife got here sometime while I was pushing. David was born around 10:30. My grandmother had brought over 2 chicken pies and green beans with white corn (my favorite meal) so everyone ate that for lunch. The midwives left right before dinner time.

I made trail mix and yogurt/fruit popsicles. They were delicious, and I definitely ate them! I would say yes to gatorade - I don't generally drink it either, but I did drink it throughout my labour and it definitely helped to keep up my strength and energy!

I didn't have anything for the midwives - but they did go to the kitchen afterward and help themselves to some stuff [:D]

I wasn't in labor when I had mine, I was simply carrying a dying baby. So they did an emergency c-section to get him out where they could help him. I didn't anticipate birthing problems, but you know they say such scary things about VBACs that I did have to do a lot of reading. It was the reading I did that led me to our decision to have a VBAC and gave me the strength to stand up to the lies the medical community told me (you will die, baby will die, if something goes wrong during a homebirth the hospital won't let you in, etc.).

So your c-section was really the result of a failed induction? Classic example of the domino effect of interventions!

I would go for that instead of gatorade! yummy!
I have been thinking about next time around. During the colder months I often make pumpkin muffins that are sooooooo incredibly good. I add yogurt to mine, and they would be super healthy if I substituted honey for sugar and added some chocolate. Everyt time I make them I think "Man, I need to remember to have some of these next time I'm in labor". Smootches had a recipe similar up on her blog a while ago.

Actually, TIME magazine had a pretty interesting article about home births in a recent issue. (It was either last week or the week before.) I can't remember the exact numbers, but it struck me that maternal/fetal deaths went down about 50% after the majority of woman starting using hospitals. I would also assume, though, that the number of deaths declined due to better pre-natal care, not just hospitals.

I'm counting in my head the number of inductions of people I know, and I'm well into the 20's. Not a single one of them had complications. What are the statistics for induction caused c-sections.
