DD did have the Vitamin K shot because of severe bruising on her head, we couldn't even touch it for about a week without her making faces or crying. She also had severe jaundice but the "theory" is that it was caused by a combination of my pre-e and and rH factor.

I got Ina May's book. I soooo want to go to the Farm now to have this baby. Oh what bliss it sounds like to just go and live there for a month and wait. I'd take Nadia with me, and Andrew could come later. Like a mini vacation before the baby comes. But I am loving this book. I am starting to practice some of the things they tell the ladies to do. Like opening your mouth and making low noises. This may sound weird, but I have such a fear of making noises in labor! I figure if I get so used to it, I won't mind.

Have you gotten to the story where the woman, her DH and the ladies attending her birth mooed with her when she pushed? Too cute. I love that book. It's my favorite. I've read through the birth stories a number of times in the last few weeks and I keep going back and rereading a few almost every night before bed. I'm hoping some of it will stick with me enough that I don't complete draw a blank when I'm in labor. I would love to go to The Farm, too, and this is coming from a woman who up until a few years ago thought NCBers were nuts and couldn't fathom why anyone would not have an epi during childbirth.

I'm in the same place, trying to get OK with making noise. I need to keep reminding myself that vocalizing is different than uncontrolled screaming. One has a clear benefit, the other is bad and of course it's that kind of screaming that is always portrayed in movies and stories and TV. It's hard to get away from that image. So I keep reading Ina May so I'll have a different image in my head.

Yes, and Julie the one thing that helps me is that I've noticed in these stories that the women say they just started making noises and it surprised them. It's like it came out of nowhere. I am really trying to focus on listening to my body. To do what it says. It seems that will be the help. Hey, I just realized, you are getting super close!!

Yes, super close. For me that could still mean anytime between now and May 1. #1 was two weeks late, #2 was ten days late, #3 doesn't seem to want to leave his/her warm and cozy home anytime soon either. I must have a very comfy womb. Oh well, I know it could still happen at any time and I know like with the other two the moment the baby is on my chest I'll be lamenting the fact that I'm not pregnant anymore.

Yeah, I remember that at the end. Wanting so badly to have the baby, but knowing it was easier to care for the baby inside rather than out. I think that's why pregnancy is so long, you really want to have the baby no matter how much work it will be!!

ORIGINAL: Royal.Fortress I think that's smart, Kathryn! I'm currently reading Birthing From Within and in it, the author says that it's vital that you PRACTICE labour stuff so that you actually know how to do it come labour time. Making noise seems like it falls under that category!! So I've got a crazy idea. Has anyone else reading Birthing From Within? There's several chapters about making birth art, and she suggests you do it in a group so you can explore your art. I don't know many other pregnant ladies IRL, but I was thinking if some of the ladies on here wanted to participate in something like that, we could set a date to do your art by and then share either on here or on our blogs about the art - and post pics, if you're brave! I'm not exactly an "artsy" person, but I think it might be a valuable exercise. I could post some short blurbs from the book on what to do. What do ya'll think? Even though I am not pregnant, I would LOVE to participate in this. I just finished a workshop with Pam England at the Farm. I could share some artwork from past clients. :o)

One of the exercises I have mom's do is to practice going limp and relaxed - in any position. First time, with no noise. The second time, deep breath in, MMMMMMM out. Third time, deep breath in, Oooohhh out. Fourth time, etc... etc... Each 'contraction' (or time that you make noise) should be about 1 minute in length. It is a good exercise to try in all types of positions: on the birthing ball, on all-fours, dancing, swaying, side-lying, etc... And is DOUBLE-Y good to do with your dh in attendance so he can get used to your 'noises'. Try it loud, soft, melodiously, monotone, etc... Anyone up for considering a weekend retreat to the Farm? I could call up Ina May and see what she thought... Perhaps I could even do a Weekend of Relaxation for those of you who could make it? We could see about doing it mid-May... what are your thoughts? I could look into pricing and availability.

Oh I'd love to. However, it's about a 12 hour drive for me. But, oh, I'd love to!!

I do too, and I'm not anywhere near southern. But I am country!! Grew up on a farm. And if I can go totally natural, was around cows and cats having babies all the time. One of the cats came out to greet us in the midst of labor. One half of her belly was gone and the other was out like a balloon. She came out and wanted petting. We petted her and then she shot right back into her spot and started howling!! It was weird. And kinda neat.

With my first two I MMMM'd and Oooohhh'd every other contraction. With Mary I did not make any noise, only controlled breathing with each contraction. I couldn't handle any noise; even noise coming from my own mouth. I even shushed my hubby and the nurses when they started to talk too loud. The only sound I wanted to hear was my baby's heartbeat on the monitor. Her heartbeat was what I focused on with my breathing. I kept in mind that my steady controlled breathing was still bringing oxygen to my baby.

Isn't it amazing? I do that too. But mostly when I get painful gas. It's counterintuitive, isn't it?

Completely counter-intuitive. When we get hurt we have the ABILITY to push a surge of adrenaline through our emotional and physical response to that pain. That adrenaline means fuming, railing, tensing up, clenching hands/jaws, etc.... In LABOR adrenaline has a profound effect - it stops labor or, in the least, can make it ineffective or unestablished. counter-intuitive to go limp and relaxed, but VERY important in labor/birth
