Big shoulders definitely make for a harder delivery.

In my case my 10lbs 8ozer was by far the hardest delivery, no question. But, like I said, that was more due to the big shoulders than the overall size I'm sure. My first 3 were all around 8lbs.

Thanks all who offered verses and mantras! Smootches, those are some great verses and lots of 'em!

Tonight putting my DS to bed I gave him his kisses and zerberts and hugs and then went to leave and suddenly he jumped up and kissed my belly. He is anxious for baby to come too. He thinks it's a boy, so does my hubby. I'm not sure at all. My DD will point to my belly and make the sign for "baby" sometimes. It was rather amazing the first time she did it.

There were 4 women at my church due from April to July of this year. 2 have already had girls and the woman due in July is having a girl. David will be the only boy.

What a blessing he'll be then.

At least there are other babies in the church! When Nadia was born, she was the only one, for like four years. There were so many grabby hands for her.....

What about head size? My babe had a gigantic head for his age, and he never engaged in the birth canal. He just didn't drop, no matter what I did.

I would think head size might have some sort of impact, depending on the mom's size.

yes...as I said, IME/O head size and shoulder size has more to do with it then weight and length does.
btw....it's actually pretty normal for me to not have the baby down in the birth canal good until the end part of labor...transition...then they drop all of a sudden and usually (if the dr doesn't try the "wait, I'm not ready" thing), then they are out in the world within five or ten minutes of when they "drop"

I went to my homebirth information night tonight! It was really interesting to hear about the process and to see all the equipment they bring with them =) I was looking for CBE courses today online and the one I REALLY want to take runs on Tuesdays - . Brad and I are youth group leaders, and youth group is on Tuesdays! I don't think they'd appreciate us ducking out for 6 weeks. ARG.

I had a good midwife, though. My water broke on its own, and I went 31 hours plus after water breaking, and I was only about 3 or so centimeters. I was having really good contractions, too. She didn't try to make me do anything; she was willing to let me wait. It just seemed like he wasn't going to move.

If I'd handled the pain better, moved into more positions (I did try standing by the bed and rocking chair), had more freedom of movement... who knows. I did have pitocin and eventually pain meds, so I couldn't move much.

LOL I guess I still don't have a "proven pelvis".

I have had that tea Maggie recommended for several days now. I love it. I can drink it without sweetener, which is really nice, I put honey in it and that is really good, but I am trying to avoid unneeded calories. I've noticed it does help with water retention. I'm just drinking one cup a day. I wish I could drink more. I love the stuff. Just thought I'd post about it.

Sigh. I want to order it!!!! But, like Chelsea, the shipping's a bit outrageous! I should look for a looseleaf supplier in Canada - DUH!!

Arg. I'm looking for CBE classes. It's not going well. Arg.

Kim, I don't know if you are interested but you could get the herbs from a Canadian supplier and make it yourself! I was looking into growing some of the herbs this summer so I can make my own and I found a couple of Canadian suppliers, pm me if you are interested!

I should say that, it makes you go to the bathroom a lot!! That could be the water retention coming out. IF you KWIM? I don't mind though, rather have it outta me than in.

Chelsea - I'm going to check out some online places =)

Emily - I was reading the beginning of the thread, and saw that you had posted a question about birthing balls - did you find a good size for yourself? I don't know if I shared this site yet - BIRTH WITH SOL (apparently the site is under construction ... that's not helpful! I wanted to order my birth pool!! ... I've linked to the cached version) - but they have birthing ball covers to buy so that you're not sitting on slimy plastic =) I think I might get my mom to sew me one! My friend offered me the use of her exercise ball, so it might be nice to cover it!

Kathryn - that's interesting about the tea. I know once I've drank my cup or two, I'm in the bathroom for the next few hours! I wonder what about it is a diuretic ...

I use an exercise ball right now that is actually one size up from the recommended ball based on my height. I think my legs are longer than they think for what my height is so my knees were too bent on the smaller one. And it's not slimy at all.. unless you mean when you are on it in labor? ya.. that might be ... interesting texture.

I LOVE MY BALL. I used to use it just to sit at the computer and stretch with but man o man it feels NICE to sit on it now all pregnant and huge-O.

I saw a video where they had a ball in L&D and they put a Chux pad on it. Looked good to me. It's coming with us to labor just in case theirs are all being used.

I ordered some tea today from the herbal place Maggie linked to, went ahead and got the Milk one too, but won't use until she's here.

Has anyone used a beanbag-type thing to labour on? They have them in the labour rooms at our hospital and I'd never seen them referred to in any of the books, web sites or threads I've looked at on labouring and birth.

I've heard about them being used, but I'm not sure where . I think maybe they're good for assisted-squat type of positions because you can shape them to however you need the support? So instead of say, leaning on your husband to push in an upright position, you could lean on the beanbag chair? It sounds like a good idea to me, anyways!!

LOL, Brandy - yes, I meant that the ball might get slimy in labour, not that it's normally slimy!!

ETA: I just bought "Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way" online - I was reading back at the beginning and it was one of the books recommended by JoyfulWife as having helped her tremendously, so I thought it might be good for me to have! They shipped it yesterday, so I should have it in 1 -1.5 weeks!! Wuhoo!

I have worked with moms who have used Hypnobabies and they had great success. I would recommend using it with a doula ONLY if the doula is familiar with being a hypnodoula.
