I want the main focus to be on Singing Talent (sounds like a weird request for a singing talent show, huh?) I understand the the producers did what they had to do for ratings, but it seems like that plan has kinda backfired.

I agree. I remember the time when shows like this were called 'Talent shows' not 'Reality shows.'

So my hope is that this season is nothing like last season! I read somewhere that they are going to stray away from the celebrity judges on focus more on the contestants like in the beginning. That would be nice. I just dont want the main focus to be on someones "personality" (Sanjaya). I want the main focus to be on Singing Talent (sounds like a weird request for a singing talent show, huh?) I understand the the producers did what they had to do for ratings, but it seems like that plan has kinda backfired.

The huge, mega popularity of AI caused celebrities to want to be seen and promoted by AI. I'm sure that the AI producers were overwhelmed by the desire of so many big names wanting to be a part of AI. Their thinking was probably that the audience would love seeing the celebs. It didn't work out that way. AI is popular because people love a Cinderella story. They love watching nobodies be discovered and becoming somebodies. And they really love being a part of making that nobody into a somebody. Watching the journey of the contestants is the heart of the show. Too many celebs on it turned AI into more of a variety show than a contest. In truth, I think AI's fans would rather see previous contestants at guests than non-AI celebs.

Jordin Sparks has the lowest sales on all AI winners. I think AI is opening doors for these young people but it's up to them on how they will utilize what they have once the door's opened. Fantasia, for one, did not seem like she hit great with her CD when it came out but later found out that she's great in The Color Purple. The ones, I think, who took chances after AI are the ones that will still be around.

I am ok with contestants using their standings in American Idol to go on to do something other than singing, such as Fantasia (plays, she also did a lifetime movie on her bio - single parenting - illiteracy) and Jennifer Hudson didn't win AI, but she won an Oscar!...worked out pretty good for her!

I would like to see that!!! I would love to see Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood (love her!) contribute to the show.

Jordin only sold 119,000 during her first week.

As far as AI winners go, that's easily the worst of the bunch.

It really is too much about the drama. I don't remember Star Search being like this & there are many success stories from that show. The writers think this is what we want, but I just want some good singing - nothing more. But, I'm only one person & obviously there are too many out there that like all this crazy stuff including a 2 hour finale of fluff! I'm not complaining, I do laugh at some of that stuff, but in the end I'd rather just see a good competition. kd

True, Studdard, Hicks and McPhee are no longer working for Sony BMG Records.

Good to hear Daughtry on the regular rotation (they played one of songs on K-Love)!

I do tune in to hear the really bad auditions too

[font="comic sans ms]Oh. I thought you meant screwing up like they did the year before when they let Taylor win the whole thing when he was obviously second rate. Those are all small things that are easily forgotten.

Taylor Hicks was dropped from his record label...as was the second winner Ruben Studdard and (not a winner) Katherine McPhee. From what I can tell Jordan Sparks isnt doing really great either (please correct me if I am wrong)

This season I would like to see someone win, who can really utilize the oppourtunities afforded to them, like keeping a record contract.

I thought Ruben Studdard left.

I am not excited about this season. The last few winners haven't done to well. As for Jordin Sparks I don't think she has had enough exposure compared to the other past winners.

Glad AI is back on, I just wish they wouldn't focus so much on the people who can't sing and those who just want to be on TV. It gets old really quick. I think they should bring back the gong from the old gong show. When someone is doing really bad they can get gonged.

I don't mind it a couple of shows but to air the bad auditions for about...let's see...maybe 6-8 shows...yup, it gets old.

I think the bells are starting to toll for AI. This season is going to be a critical one in determing it's future. I'm not very excited about this yr. based on the outcome of those who were finalists last year. I knew Kat wouldn't go far and still think Jordin has great potential, but she has to find the right match for marketing promoting etc.

I also agree with those who were disappointed in the big name celebs as guest artist's last season. Most all of them did more damage than good imo. I'd rather see raw talent exposed.

The thing about pop music is teachers as in pop are not the same as in classical (I have classical training). What they want in pop is not the same as they want in classical.

Bad teachers? Some of the judges are just as guilty as charged for promoting books, videos, or classes promoting the improper technique.

Do you really think any of those celebrities were there to teach? They were there to plug their new cd, period, end of story.

This has got to be the weirdest auditions I have ever watched on American Idol. I can't believe they let some of the people audition. Some people were outright vulgar. Particulary the guy in Philly who sang to Paula Abdul

Some really oddities on the show tonight.
The stalker or the guy who waxed his chest - not sure which is the weirdest.
Did hear a few good voices - one was named Christy from Oregon, the other was the last girl who auditioned. Also like a couple of the guys.
I don't think we ever see the real talent until after all the weeding out is done.

Where do they get these people from year after year? This audition was one of the weirdest I've had ever seen. The guy who was singing a song by Paul Robeson had to go as well as the woman who was singing Jefferson Airplane songs.

The first guy who auditioned was great, along with the woman whose little girl who has an illness.

But the 16-year-old girl sounded horrible.

Man, that stalker guy was just disturbing! I'm really surprised they didn't stop him sooner and make him leave. That was beyond crude
