5 hours!!?? Ray, that's why I gladly pay $50, $100, or even $200 for delivery, set up, and haul off the old. [;)]

rayofson -> RE: The Garage-come on in (6/17/2008 12:37:05 PM)

Some of that time was spent cleaning the area. I don't think that would have been included. [8D]

APZR -> RE: The Garage-come on in (6/17/2008 3:08:09 PM)

Cleaning... what's that? I hear my wife complain all the time and tossing out that word every now and then... but I don't get it. [&:]

I... *gasp* don't mind cleaning. My girlfriend is also a housecleaner, so it'll work out perfectly when we're married.

APZR -> RE: The Garage-come on in (6/24/2008 9:24:02 PM)

A little over 200 miles and well over $60 per DAY in fuel for 3 days straight so far. I'm glad I'll be done with this current project this week... I just keep thinking of the $$$$ I'll have when done and it's sold.

It'll be good to get out from under that one. Hoping that gas prices will start coming down soon.

Brazil has made themselves energy independent... it can be done.
I also don't understand why we don't see more diesel high mileage cars AND truck in the US. Ford, Chevy/GM, and Daimler Chrysler make and sell diesel vehicles in Europe that consistently get 40-50 MPG. We don't need to "develop" the technology... they already have it!!! I would love to have an option for a turbo diesel in my Chevy Colorado... an in line 5 cylinder diesel would rock for pulling power.

Yeah but, we got politics interfering with all this somehow.

rayofson -> RE: The Garage-come on in (6/27/2008 10:12:12 AM)

Making changes like that is a slow process for the auto manufacturers. If they are already making those vehicles for sale elsewhere, then they'd have to adapt them to US standards. They'd need things like EPA testing and mandated safety equipment that the current models probably don't have. With those relatively minor changes it would still take a couple years. They have to re-tool or build new facilities too.

Even more changes are certainly on the horizon as they develop whole new cars off the CAD drawing board. You won't see them for at least five years though, because it takes that long to do all the engineering, testing and tooling.

Good point about our crippling US standards. I think I'll pull an engine out of a Massey and drop in my Chevy... should get about 60 MPG then.

We had a cheap rocking chair...tube frame with faux leather. I know we didn't pay very much for it. One of the welds on the tube frame broke. I tried repairing it with JB-Weld, but it just broke again soon thereafter. I couldn't just weld it because of the flammable faux-leather material.

Needing a rocker with a grand-baby in the house, I just decided to go out and buy a new one. We went to the local furniture store and found a nice glider...wood with cloth cushions. The wife loved it.

Being a glider, it has runners along the floor that don't rock at the floor level. The rocking is done by moving parts higher up in the undercarriage of the chair.

It was perfect except that it could have been higher off the ground. She has knee problems and if the seat is too low she has real problems getting out of it. This one wasn't too bad but could use a little extra height.

After it was delivered, I did some testing with plywood pieced to find a height that was good for her. What worked was two thicknesses of 1/2 inch plywood.

I cut a plywood base and some plywood blocks to go under the runners of the chair. Then I cut more plywood blocks that were notched to go around the ends of the runners to keep the chair from working its way off of the platform.

A dry fit with the rocker in place proved that everything fit nicely, so I glued the stacks of blocks to the plywood base and clamped to dry. Did a double-check on the fit and removed the rocker...left the clamps on overnight.

I must say it looks pretty good and fits perfectly. [sm=thumbsup.gif]

With a higher center of gravity, you'll hafta go slower around corners.

rayofson -> RE: The Garage-come on in (7/6/2008 7:00:46 PM)

Yeah, I'll hafta warn Tooshy about that. [8D]

We went camping this weekend. At home we have a gas grill, but when we go camping we bring a small charcoal grill. Years ago I bought a Chimney Charcoal Starter. It works great.

All you have to do is wad up a couple of newspaper pages and stuff them underneath. It helps to add about a teaspoon of cooking oil to the newspaper. Then fill it up with charcoal. Light it off and in about 20 minutes or so you'll have hot coals that you can dump out into your grill. It works every time...without lighter fluid which puts an off taste in the food. I also don't buy the 'match lite' because it's pre-soaked in lighter fluid.

And I found another use for it too. Ever had a campfire that just wouldn't take off? I did, and after getting tired of messing with it, I loaded up the chimney with charcoal and then dumped the hot coals on the campfire. Add a little lighter fluid and a match, and the campfire took right off. [:)]

Yep, I've been using the charcoal chimney for some time now for the same reasons. [:)]

Oh c'mon... you just aren't using enough white gas!

That's 'cause I do look better with eyebrows. [8D]

APZR -> RE: The Garage-come on in (7/8/2008 3:13:42 PM)

Well after being in the grips of a drought for the past couple of years, we are finally getting daily summer afternoon thunder storms like I remember as a kid. Had a rather severe one this past weekend, and coupled with ending up sick, I'm glad we didn't attempt to go camping. With the wind we had, I'd probably still be looking for half the tent and a couple of mismatched socks.
