"You have it made, being single and all." (I would hardly consider having Frosted Flakes for dinner and crying myself to sleep "having it made.") "I'm surprised you don't have a big screen TV." (person assuming that singles have loads of money at their disposal) (There's nothing on TV but garbage, watching it on a big screen isn't going to make it any better.)

I am not sure if this qualifies, but it didn't happen until after I was single. After learning my husband had died, people would often ask me, "were you close?" I have always felt that was a STUPID question, but also realize it is similar to hearing someone died of lung cancer and asking, 'oh did they smoke?' I think people want to consider themselves safe from tragedy, and if they can eliminate having things in common with the deceased or their survivors they feel safer.

I can hardly believe this thread is still active! Praise report first: I thank God that I am now a lot less depressed than I was when I first posted in this forum. Single cliches: Every single is looking for a grand romance or has a romantic nature. I had a senior citizen tell me that I was marriage material because I thought the moon looked pretty while setting. Frankly, I think people who are up at ridiculous hours of the morning looking at the moon should be considered less marriagible! Singles always have their marriage antenas up or should always have them up. So if I go on vacation by myself, I am looking for a man as opposed to getting some rest? How silly! Single people are alone and therefore are lonley and jealous of married folk. My mother believes this. I have always belied in the tenth commandment and see no reason not to apply it to marriage. Besides, I am so busy trying to be what Christ calls me to be that I do not have time to waste being jealous of other people's lives. "If you would only do X you would be married." This thought is ironic, in that in my experience , it has been expressed by people who have marriages that were NOT admired by the singles in my former church. After the condescending married person left the vicinity ,we would say to each other thing like: Do you admire HER marriage? No, I would like a man who loves me. or worse yet No, I want a man who respects me and his vows.

Here is one I have heard, it goes a little something like this... "you are hidden from other men and God will reveal you to your husband" What kind of nonsense is this...I am hidden?? What in the world...where do they get this stuff?

I have heard many cliches, but the one that really gets my goat is: "God won't bring you your husband until you are so in love with Jesus that it won't matter whether or not you are married or not." When God created Adam, Adam was in a perfect, sinless state, and he had perfect, unbroken fellowship with God. STILL, God said, "IT IS NOT GOOD FOR MAN TO BE ALONE. I WILL MAKE A HELPER SUITABLE FOR HIM." Why would people think things have changed since then?

That's what I feel like saying a lot of times when people give super-spiritual "pat" answers that have little or no biblical foundation ... "Where do they get this stuff??" Well said!

Man: "You're not interested in [my wife], are you?" Me: "Of course not!" Man: "What, do you think something is wrong with her?" What I'd like to say: "Well, the fact she married you comes to mind."

Some one spoke of the Gen. verse when God said " It is not good for man to be alone. I will give him a help meet for him..." I thought on this alot. I think God was speaking about Adam alone. Why do I think this? Adam had more than one name his first being 'Man' just as Eve's name was 'Woman' until Adam named her. It was not good for Adam to be alone because God gave him a MANdate to populate and subdue the earth. He could not do this without someone to HELP him MEET this obligation. This was why is was not good for Man being Adam to be alone. Besides Paul gives us several reasons to stay single in the new testament.

Some people feel that you are single only because you aren't trying hard enough to not be single.

"If I had to do it over again, I wouldn't get married." And what does your spouse have to say about that?

Not sure if this counts as a cliche, but I just remembered that a while back, I went to someone in confidence, and told them I had a slight problem with looking at things on the Internet (you know what I mean). His only reply was for me to disconnect my Internet access. That's not feasible for me. That made it sound like that was the only reason for my having Internet access. I used to never have an interest in that stuff, but the problem is that [1] millions of terabytes of it are available on the Internet, [2] it's very easy to happen upon it by accident, and [3] singles are a prime target for satan to attack. (I don't have this problem any more though. It was something I had to work out on my own.)

The cliche I hate the most is the assumption is that since I'm single, I'm living an irresponsible lifestyle of constant partying, drinking and sex and that I have more money to spend than married people.

"She never married. She must be selfish and hates children." "She's over 30 and not married, something must be wrong with her." THE STATEMENT OF THE CENTURY "She's over 30 and unmarried because she's looking for the right set of financials." First of all, I adore children and am the most unselfish person I know. The only thing wrong is I haven't met Mr. Right.

Ok First of all, I have to say that I haven't laughed so hard in a realllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy long time so God bless you all for making me smile and laugh But at the same time, it makes me kind of cry My bum is all numb cuz I read of the pages in this thread and it took me like 2 hours to read everything but I say it's worth it Secondly, I don't know if you guys have heard of this cliche before, but I always get it from a married friend of mine, He asks me almost every single time I see him , "so how's your boyfriend?" I just smile and reply, "I hope he's doing dandy" It hurts me when he says this and one time me and his wife had a long conversation about the joys of being single cause all you have to worry about is yourself and more time to spend time with God and yada yada yada Yes it's true, you get to spend more time with God and learn more about yourself But it's a long stuggle with lots of frustration In my head, I was thinking, "How do you know how it feels to be single???? You got married after 2 months ya'll met and never have been single a day in your life!!!" But of course, I never said that because I actually THINK before I SPEAK cuz it might hurt other people's feelings All married couples that I've known tell me that "God will bring you your husband in His time, not in your time" True, but quite annoying to hear all the time It's like someone trying to find a job, but can't find one for months an probably years and people telling you "don't worry, you'll find one sooner or later" Quite annoying to hear from time to time no? It's the exact same thing for a single trying to look for a spouse, but a much longer and frustrating process!!!!!!!!!!

Let's see... How come you don't have a boyfriend? How come you aren't married yet? I knew someone who didn't get married until they were in their 40s. You have plenty of time! You better hurry and get married before you are 21 or you will be an old maid. (Heard that one from my grandpa) You're too picky You gotta go where the boys are and my personal favorite... If I wasn't married already I'd take you out. Yes, I have heard all of these.

"I found my SO when I stopped looking. Maybe you're looking too hard." or "God is all we need." True, but God Himself said it isn't good for a man to be alone. or "It must be nice to be able to drop everything and go somewhere whenever you want."

Just what I think. Know it can be frustrating with your family but try not having a family for that to care about, or a Church that cares, or "friends" who care and you are way past the cute stage of being single and people do not even want you near their children because there must be something wrong with you. Yeah. I'd like to know people who would introduce me to someone.
